Technology Tool Guide
How to create an ASSIGNMENT in Canvas?

Getting Started
Navigate to the MODULES page of your Canvas class (left side)

Click the PLUS SIGN on the right side of the module’s name
Make Your Assignment
Click [NEW ASSIGNMENT], give the assignment a NAME and click ADD ITEM
Edit Your Assignment
Click on the assignment’s title to edit the assignment
Edit Your Assignment
Click on the EDIT button in the upper right to add details to your assignment
Add Details to Your Assignment
From this screen you can add DETAILS. This can be text, links, pictures,
videos, etc. Anything students may use to help do the assignment.

From this screen you can also determine the assignment’s
POINT VALUE / SUBMISSION TYPE / DUE DATE
Submission Type
Submission Type will most likely be ONLINE or EXTERNAL TOOL.
Submission Type - ONLINE
ONLINE submission will most likely be TEXT ENTRY or FILE UPLOADS.
File uploads can be pdf’s, word documents, powerpoints, etc.
Submission Type - EXTERNAL TOOL
EXTERNAL TOOL submission allows you to access Google Drive. Click
FIND to access Drive. (if you have not connected Drive please go to that learning segment and do that now)
Submission Type - EXTERNAL TOOL
Scroll to GOOGLE DRIVE CLOUD ASSIGNMENT and click on it. Navigate to
the assignment, select it and click submit. Finally click SELECT.
*Creating an assignment from Google Drive does make a copy for each student to work on
Submission Type - Save Assignment
Once you have points, submission type, and due date you can SAVE or
SAVE & PUBLISH. The latter makes it visible to students.
Students can see and work on the assignment
Students cannot see but you can publish later if you just save
You Canvas Assignment
Once you save you can see your assignment.
Details of the assignment. This can be instructions, links, pictures, videos, rubrics, etc.
Students click on the assignment to open in a new tab and to edit.
You Canvas Assignment
You can click and hold the 8 DOTS on the left to move the assignment in a
different order. Click the NO SIGN to publish and for students to see.
Click to publish or unpublish
You Canvas Assignment
Now it’s your turn!
