INTRODUCTION

Hazmat Protective Systems has established itself in the market of air filtration since 1991 and specializes in the manufacturing of filters for personal respiratory protection as well as the impregnation of activated carbons.

Manufacturing complies to ISO 9002 since 1994 as audited annually by TUV Rheinland - Germany.

All filters comply to EN 141 and 143, which is the International standard for respiratory protection filters.

Hazmat has exported a carbon impregnation plant to Taiwan as well as a quality control laboratory, which is used to to verify the quality of the impregnation process.

Hazmat has the expertise and know-how to export similar projects with regards to the current plant on a turnkey basis and according to the customers specific requirements.

The NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical ) filter, designed for use in conjunction with a full face gas mask, has a international standard screw-thread attachment which fits all types of full face masks.

The filter canister consists of a double filtration mechanism, which consist of a primary and secondary filter system. The primary filter is on the inlet side and its main function is to contain particles. The media used for this primary stage is HEPA. This is the abbreviation used for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. It contains particles from 0.3 micron and bigger. This is anything from bacteria and bigger.

The secondary filter is impregnated activated carbon. The main function of the carbon is to adsorb chemicals from the air passing through. Adsorption is achieved through physical and chemical adsorption. Physical adsorption involves weak Van der Waal’s forces. Chemical adsorption is achieved through impregnation of the carbon with copper, chromium and silver.

LABORATORY BACKGROUND

The laboratory responsible for the quality tests is a sister company of Hazmat, which is called Protechnik Laboratories.

The quality system of Protechnik was accredited by the South African Accreditation System (SANAS) according to the ISO/IEC Guide 25 which is equivalent to the EN45001.

The accreditation implies that the laboratory system is functioning from standard procedures, that the accredited methods were validated and the calibrations are traceable to international standards. To ensure the proper functioning of this system, SANAS performs an annual assessment on the test laboratories of Protechnik.

SANAS is a member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation (ILAC) where mutual recognition agreements are promoted. SANAS has now MRA’s ( Mutual Recognition Agreements) with the following countries:

Switzerland, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, UK, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan

CONCLUSION

A given respiratory protective device can only be approved when the individual components satisfy the requirements of the test specification and practical performance tests have been carried out on the product.

This proposal gives the buyer the opportunity to acquire the technology and know-how to manufacture and test filter canisters for use in a chemical warfare environment. The technology includes equipment, all related technical documentation (such as raw material specifications, operating manuals, test procedures, drawings, etc.), training and all information required to manufacture and test the filters according to international accepted standards.

The purpose of the above discussion is to determine the exact requirement of the client. Should the client be interested, a detail quotation and proposal will follow set out with great detail and elaboration on all aspects of the offer.
