Food & Sustainability Thoughts to Consider:  What  about  growing  our  own  food,  what  if  every  school  has  a  garden?  How do we create self-contained neighborhoods inclusive of food & other important services (laundry mat, cleaners, grocery)?

Access Policy Education Availability of fresh meat & produce downtown Newark for growing number of residents and even transient workers.

Policy needs to be simplified in order to get resources that are readily available

People are not aware of how to eat nutritiously

People are living in food desserts

Policy change or awareness of existing policy

Letting the kids lead, they can be ambassadors to their parents, educate them first.

Locally grown food

Planning process to simplify access to resources already available

Neighborhoods Thoughts to Consider: How to build sustainable and supportive community? What are the ingredients that make a sustainable community that is inclusive of all stakeholders?

Neighborhood  Development

Housing Jobs Small Business Development

Affordable  housing

High  skills  needed

Independent  from  government

Co-‐ownership,  if  its  owned  its  taken  care  of,  people  are  mutually  invested

More  education

Job  creation

More  community  spaces  needed  for  people  to  congregate  (parks,  etc)

Empowerment  of  people

Independent  from  government

Use  process  for  united  ownership

Big  corp.  business  is  not  always  the  solution

Innovation  will  lead  to  sustainability

Women in Power Thoughts to Consider: What  impact  does  femininity  have  on  elected  officials?  Why  don’t  more  women  run  for  office?  Where  is  the  mentorship  of  women?

Collective Bargaining Supportive Women Groups Gender Stereotypes Collective  bargaining  to  bring  more  women  into  the  scene

Creating  spaces  for  women

Constant media images of women = weakness

Breaking through corporate glass ceiling

Women  groups  that  help  prep  women  to  be  politicians

Women in politics = no children or spouse

Getting more women more excited about politics

Older women not given same respect as older men

Women  in

Power

Gender  Stereotypes

Supportive  womens  groups

Collective  bargaining

Economic Empowerment

Thoughts to Consider: How can we unite small business owners to build city together?

Skills Development Ownership Build Business Social

Entrepreneurship Cultural gap > build->train to benefit from economic

Accountability, improvement of trust

Buy local, eat/drink local, play local – it's easy & fun

Business with a social purpose

Social Capital (insource)

If you own it you will value and take care of it.

Make it in Newark – manufacturing is key to wealth/capital accumulation in families -

Solve economic and social issues

Re-training people: Soft Skills development

Replicating Harlem retail in Newark, a lot of room for retail

Business success outside your immediate area- wider network

The Newark Brand

Thoughts to Consider: How does Newark get past its negative perception? Does the average resident know about changes within the City of Newark?

Improve Safety Improvements in

Landscape Internal Attitudes Eliminate Silos

Communication between law enforcement and community

Dilapidated buildings, infrastructure renewal project

Community must feel good about Newark first

Connectedness

“Community Policing”

Parks and recreation restoration

Change comes from community first

Don’t let wards disconnect us

Seeing change=feel change= action

Unified vision needed

Youth Empowerment

Thoughts to Consider: Culture - of asking questions are discouraged the older you become. Why is this not part of the conversation in the education system? How can we give youth a voice?

Youth Empowerment

Lineage  Pride

Tech  learning  spaces

Expect  to  Succeed

Lineage Pride Expect to Succeed Tech Learning Space Youth  should  learn  more  about  their  lineage  to  promote  a  greater  sense  of  self  worth.

Every  child  should  expect  to  go  to  college

Learning innovation

This  part  of  conversation  is  missing:  community  pride

Level  of  accountability  must  be  in  place

Cross  cultural  virtual  exchange  can  serve  as  a  bridge  to  connect  them  to  history

Creating networks for youth to meet people who can help them develop their talents – mentorship

Expectations  of  achievement  >  better  self  esteem  >  motivate  them  to  succeed

Schools  should  teach  students  to  be  the  CEOs  of  their  lives
