Your map to “There” begins withMGCOA Membership
When we began this season, I chal-lenged everyone to think of how we are “Getting from Here to There”; not necessarily about getting from the beginning of the season to the end, but more about the evolution of the golf business and the success stories of golf courses that have gotten “There”. The fact is the golf business is different today. As golf course owners and operators we have been forced to make adjust-ments and change how we operate.
The same goes for the MGCOA. The MGCOA had made adjustments to the budget and with a new agree-ment with the NGCOA, will be able to lower your cost of being a mem-ber of the MGCOA. We have made it easier for you to be a member. Join and reap the benefits of member-ship. In fact, look to the left facing page and you will see that Member-ship Doesn’t Cost, It Pays.
In this issue you will also see the information on the Michigan Golf Business Conference. The confer-ence has been repackaged so that you can bring more people for a lower price. You can bring 5 key staff to this premier golf business event for the price of 3. Knowledge
is king and the more people on your staff that have access to knowledge, the better your facility will be.
I am biased! I have been a mem-ber of the MGCOA for decades and am thankful for the opportunities that the Association has given me. Even today, our course enjoys cost savings of several thousands of dollars each year. Our participation in the Golf League Championship and its software has provided us another tool for customer reten-tion and better yet, more rounds. I know that our Association’s gov-ernment affairs team is looking out for us. With the functions that I do attend, I meet fellow opera-tors and we can pick each other’s brains for ideas. This exchange of ideas, whether at a function or list-serv, is the real value of belonging to the MGCOA.
So “Getting from Here to There”, how far along are you? Have you gotten “there” yet? As a golf course operator you are faced with many choices. Whether to join the MGCOA or attend the Michigan Golf Business Conference are just two of them. But if you are looking for help or for the answer to How

TAKE BACK YOUR TEE TIMES!Dealing with tee time sites is no
fun, and can cost your golf course thousands of dollars a year. Ac-cording to an in house survey,
about 98% of surveyed golf courses in Michigan are unhappy with the current tee time software available to them. So what did we do? We shut up and listened. We went to the drawing boards, and built a site focused around the wants, needs, and pains of all golf courses, big & small.
SkyBirdie Inc. is a forward think-ing, Golf Solutions Company based in Jackson, MI. With a diverse team of marketers, designers, and pro-grammers, SkyBirdie’s primary focus is giving our clients the best return on their investment. We of-fer golf courses the opportunity to have complete control over their tee times & golf deals, all while retaining up to 98% of their green fees. SkyBirdie also provides golf courses with web & video services, 24/7 access to SkyBirdie Labs, and free real-time tournament software, plus much more.

Sycamore Hills Golf Course named2013 Course of the Year
Sycamore Hills Golf Course, a 27-hole championship public golf facility designed by award-win-ning architect Jerry Matthews and located in Macomb, has been se-lected the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association’s Course of the Year for 2013.
Owned and managed by the Schwark family, Sycamore Hills is conveniently located near Detroit, easily accessible from the sur-rounding metropolitan area and offers a resort atmosphere in an urban environment. An 18-tee, 300-yard practice range and multiple tee position options on each of the golf holes highlight the standout fa-cility. Matthews, a Michigan-based architect, designed the expansive layout of three nine-hole courses to test the skill of expert golfers while allowing novices to enjoy the
experience as well.“We are thrilled and honored to
be selected, and proud of our staff and management,” Tom Schwark, owner and general manager, said. Schwark was honored by the Asso-ciation in 2005 with the Lyle Leeke Distinguished Service Award for his commitment and contribution to the Association and to the golf industry in Michigan. He chairs the Michigan Golf Alliance, a consortium of the al-lied golf associations in the state for the purpose of legislative advocacy.
Kate Moore, MGCOA’s executive director, said the accomplish-ments of the Schwark family,
Sycamore Hills Golf Course, Macomb.
their community contributions and exceptional management of Sycamore Hills made it an easy se-lection as course of the year.
“The golf course exemplifies what the consumer of golf in our state is looking for -- exceptional service, a quality golf course and reason-able rates in a family atmosphere,” she said. “The Schwark family has proven that a family business has a place in our industry.”
Sycamore Hills will be recognized at the annual Michigan Golf Busi-ness Conference and Vendor Fair on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids.
