Teaching English Learners Early Mathematics (TEEM) Do you want to learn more about mathematics content, your grade level CCSS content and practice standards and how to apply this to your classroom practice? Do you want to get paid to do this? Do you want to work with your grade level colleagues to plan and work with other teachers? Do you want to learn new strategies and how your curriculum supports classroom instruction? Have you heard of lesson study and how teachers can work together to enhance student learning? Do you want to incorporate writing in your math instruction through interactive notebooking? The Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education will be awarded to CSUSB to support professional development in our region. TEEM is a project to improve the academic achievement of English Learner students in math in PK through grade 6. It will be a partnership with the Riverside County Office of Education and the Romoland Elementary and Nuview Union School Districts. The four-year project will support ELs in structured math inquiry through interactive notebooks. It will support teachers and principals in Lesson Study. FOCUS To enhance teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge; prepare students for rigorous and challenging math content across grades PK- 6 th and thereby increase student achievement in mathematics. PARTNERS California State University San Bernardino, Riverside County Office of Education, Nuview Union School District and Romoland School District. TEACHER DEVELOPMENT Opportunities to increase mathematics content knowledge. The interface of academic content with pedagogy for English Learners (ELs) and all students. Support systems necessary for best practices in teaching. Links with ongoing research for teachers as researchers. Network opportunities with local, state and national mathematics leadership organizations. OPPORTUNITIES College credits, stipend and professional library available to participating teachers. A 4-year long, summer intensive program for PK- 6 th grade teachers. Emphasis on strategies and support for English Language Learners in mathematics. Chance to evaluate innovative teaching strategies and research their effectiveness through lesson study. Opportunities to collaborate and reflect on curriculum and instruction with other teachers. On-going mentoring and coaching support. Data analysis to inform instruction and increase student achievement. GOALS Increase teachers’ mathematics content understanding over 4 years. Enhance teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. Engage students in relevant, contextual mathematics that is thoughtful, hands-on and full of problem solving opportunities. Improve students’ mathematics achievement, as well as writing, study and metacognitive skills and mindsets Update and align current practice to California adopted mathematics framework with a focus on challenging and rigorous math curricula.
