YOUTH COUNCIL SpRINGS INTO ACTION
Shildon's Youth Council continue to keep up the good work, striving to make Shildon a better place to live for people of all ages.Thursday, April 15th, saw the Shildon Youth Council spring into action on a ‘walkabout’ with the Fire and Rescue Service, Shildon Community Safety Group, Shildon Neighbourhood Warden and a Shildon CPSO. The Youth Council organised the walkabout to view certain areas of Shildon that had been identified by young people as areas that needed attention in terms of litter, dog fouling and derelict buildings. They visited Hackworth Park and certain areas of Jubilee Fields to see if action can be taken on improving and clearing up areas and has resulted in letters being sent to the relevant authorities asking for action to combat this growing problem of flytipping, dog fouling etc. The Chair of the organisation said, "The Youth Council is here to tackle the problems that bug young people and we've learnt, from ourselves and others, about what they are. The walkabout
on Thursday shows young people that we're listening and will do what we can by badgering the people in charge."If any young people would

SHILDON MEMORIES pROjECT THANkS
COMMUNITYSince August 2008, the Shildon Memories Project has involved over 1,000 residents in the town in activities as ‘Time Detectives’ to investigate, explore, share and celebrate Shildon’s social history. The project came to an end on March 31st, 2010, following a Celebration Exhibition at Locomotion during February, which was seen by over 13,000 people.Over the past 19 months, children and older residents enjoyed learning about and sharing memories related to traditional toys and games, life in Shildon during the world wars and the soldiers from Shildon who bravely gave their lives for our country. They have learned about the carnivals, May Day celebrations, old schooldays, local industry and the local shops. Jeremy Warr, the project's heritage writer, worked with a wide range of community
groups and schools in the town to help them record their memories through poems and stories. A lasting legacy of the project is the Shildon Memories Display Case at Locomotion Collections Building.Heritage Resource Packs have been made and will be presented shortly to the three local primary schools, Shildon Library, the Town Council, Locomotion, the Local History Recall Group and County Record Office. A set of play scripts tracing life in the town from the 1940’s have also been presented to the Tearaways and Centre Stage theatre groups. This means that local people will have access to more local history resources. Age Concern Durham County, who managed the project, expressed their appreciation to all the groups and local people who took part in the project, especially the volunteers who made the project possible.

A Shildon company that restores railway carriages and locomotives to their former glory opened its doors to members of the public recently. Rail buffs who visited Rail Restorations North East, which is based in Hackworth Industrial Park, were treated to a sneak peak of steam locomotive No. 77, Norwood, which is being restored for use on the Weardale Railway. No. 77 was built in 1948 by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn and goes by the name Norwood because it spent its working life at Norwood Coke Works in Dunston. David Foxton, a partner for Railway Restoration North East, is overseeing the restoration, which has been underway for the past three months. David is assisted by five volunteers who
work on the engine every Wednesday. Norwood needs a lots of work, including a new boiler barrel, and it is expected that it will be ready for service in three
years’ time.Weardale Railway is hopeful of running services between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope from May onwards.
DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR TOOL THIEF
A man from Eldon has been sentenced for stealing over £16,000 of equipment from a machinery shop.Paul Egglestone, 34, of New Row, claimed that the items had been stolen by someone posing as a member of staff from Tool Time, the owner of the stolen property.Egglestone hired a rotavator from Tool Time on August 3rd, 2009. The following day, he returned to hire a mini digger worth £15,000 for 24 hours. Upon delivery of the digger, Egglestone reportedly asked the delivery man if he could extend the hire for an extra day.Staff at Tool Time were suspicious of him and sent an employee to his house, at
which there was no evidence of any work taking place and no sign of either piece of equipment. Egglestone was arrested on Tuesday, August 18th. At the time of his arrest, he claimed that someone purporting to represent Tool Time had taken the equipment, and presented a fake receipt as proof.Despite his initial deceit, Egglestone pleaded guilty to the theft of the items, which have not been recovered.Egglestone has a history of criminal behaviour, having recently finished a sentence for using false cheques, was given a suspended eight month sentence and must complete 100 hours of community service.

COppER THIEVES STRIkE AGAIN
Police are hunting thieves who continue to put lives at risk and cost council tax payers thousands of pounds by stealing copper cables from street lights in County Durham.A further incident took place at around 4.15am on Monday, April 19th, when Durham County Council’s emergency contact was called to Close House. Five hundred metres of overhead copper cable had been stolen, which will cost council tax payers some
£2,000 to replace.This latest theft is one of a number of similar thefts across the south Durham area. Last month 400 metres of street lights were downed when £4,500 worth of cabling was taken in the Coundon and Leeholme areas.Inspector Martin Peace, head of Bishop Auckland’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said, “Not only are these thefts a huge inconvenience and cost
to residents across the county, they are extremely dangerous. “These people are putting their lives at risk. The copper cables are live and are very often right next to overhead power lines. SHILDON MAN IN AMBULANCE ASSAULT CASE
A young man from Shildon has appeared in court after assaulting police officers while drunk.Eighteen year-old Corey Allison, from Maple Avenue, pleaded guilty to two assault charges and a further charge of being drunk and disorderly in the town on Saturday, December 19th, 2009.The prosecution told magistrates at Bishop Auckland that an ambulance
crew who were attending to Allison requested police assistance. When police arrived, he was said to have acted in an abusive manner. Officers added that he was “clearly drunk”, and continued to shout and swear before being arrested.Allison’s right hand was handcuffed, but before officers could restrain his left hand, he caught one officer with a punch and attempted to punch the
other officer; he then kicked out, catching the officers in the head and chest.Despite the blows, neither officer was injured by the defendant, who was eventually subdued after officers deployed CS spray.The case was adjourned for the preparation of pre-sentence reports. Allison was bailed and is due to appear for sentencing on Friday, May 14th.
AWAY DRAW FOR HORSE AGAINST TOp OF TABLE STATIONSecond placed Grey Horse Over 40’s played away at table-topping Hartlepool Station Hotel and came away with a deserved 1-1 draw. With a five man midfield, Horse dominated possession in the first half and went close with chances falling to Pat Bowtell, John Myers and Marty Joyce. The best effort of the opening minutes, however, was a strike from Darren Foster which just missed the target. Horse had to be alert to Hartlepool Station’s attacks and their physical play. The Shildon side conceded
just on half time after full back David Bulleyment could only head the ball over keeper Stuart Timmiss with a Station player riding on his back. In the second half, Horse again had the better of the play. Mel Douglas went on a fantastic solo run, picking up the ball in defence and running through the centre in to a promising position, but his shot lacked power and placement.Both sides continued to create chances throughout the second half, and Station missed two good opportunities to increase their lead. After 70 minutes sub Kevin
Costello headed down for Foster to equalise with a splendid 25 yard shot over the home keeper. The equaliser spurred Horse on to get a winner, and Mark Greenwood almost got it with minutes remaining, but could not direct his shot on goal after good passing play on the edge of the box. A point each, which is more beneficial to the Station in the race for to win the league. Next game: Wearmouth Southwick Carpets (A) For the next fixture, players are to meet at Grey Horse 9.10am on Saturday.

RAILWAYMEN BEAT CHAMpIONS ELECT
Shildon AFC travelled to Northern League champions-elect recently, hoping to keep up the pace in the race for second place. Before kick-off, Spennymoor knew that a draw against Shildon would guarantee league silverware.Spenny hoped to enjoy a day of sunshine and a carnival atmosphere, but Shildon were determined to at least delay their title party. The Railwaymen stunned Spennymoor early on, scoring after only three minutes. A Jamie Harwood cross from the right found Danny Richmond, who kept his composure to coolly slot the ball home.After the goal, neither side could really dominate a very end-to-end game. Either side could have scored the next goal, but Spennymoor got an equaliser, much to the delight of their fans. The goal came from a free-kick on the edge of the box, which was given away by Justin Keegan. The kick, taken by No. 6 Stephen Capper, was
palmed onto the bar by Shildon ‘keeper Finch, but the rebound fell kindly to Spenny’s Michael Rae for an easy tap-in.The game continued to flow from one end to the other. Moments after the equaliser, Andrew Johnson shot just wide. Spenny came close to taking the lead on 32 minutes, but Anthony Peacock was denied by a good save from Keith Finch.Another goal finally came in the 41st minute. Shildon’s Martin Houlahan twisted and turned past 3 defenders before drilling the ball in to the bottom corner; it was a fabulous goal and Turns, the Spennymoor goalie, had absolutely no chance.After an entertaining opening period, fans could have expected fireworks in the second half, but they would have been wrong to. Both sides struggled to create chances over 45 minutes when the two sides seemed to cancel each other out.Chris Lawther went close for Spenny, but Finch kept him out. Houlahan also went close for Shildon.Overall, Shildon were the better
side on the day, controlling the midfield throughout and mostly keeping Spenny’s pacey forwards at bay.Spennymoor’s fans were still happy following the defeat, Whitley Bay’s draw with Newcastle Benfield meant that the Moors were crowned Skilltrainingltd Northern League Division One Champions.Shildon moved to within two points of second-placed Dunston, who have played all of their games, while Shildon have three games left to play.Shildon hope to cement their runners-up spot with a win in their final home game of the season against Tow Law Town, and are hoping to see a good turnout of supporters. Finishing 2nd in the league would be a fantastic achievement considering that Shildon started the season badly; winning one game in seven, losing five times and drawing once.The club end the season with an away fixture at Penrith on Wednesday, May 5th, kick off at 7.30pm.
DEAN STREET TO HOST CUp FINAL
The final of a local football competition is to be held at Shildon’s Dean Street ground from 6.45pm on Monday,
April 16th. The final of the South Durham Charity Bowl will be contested by Barnard Castle and Roddymoor F.C.
BOWLS CLUB INVITES NEW MEMBERS
A new season is about to begin at Shildon Railway Bowls Club, and it is opening its doors to new members of any age and ability.The outdoor club boasts one of the best greens in the county and can provide bowls for use as well as free tuition for

CRICkET SEASON kICkS OFF
The 2010 cricket season begins on Saturday with our home town club, Shildon Railway, entertaining Langley Park at the Sportsfield in the opening fixture of the Readers Durham County League “A” Division. There are significant changes to last season’s team with several players having left the club and others unavailable due to football and university commitments. The club is looking to the inclusion of some home-
grown talent in both senior sides, whilst building for the future. Several juniors will be in the 2nd XI team away to Langley Park.The club will launch a major fund-raising venture soon and a club spokesman told The Crier that, “Although the idea isn’t original, we are hopeful that it will promote much publicity around the area and we’re confident that the good folk of Shildon and local businesses will get behind us in our venture.”
