THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:
Mind Set of Jesus – Part 3
To be honest with you I was amazed how Jesus was guiding me when I was sitting to write these reflections for these couple of weeks. First he was trying to let us (at least for me) to understand who he is and then start revealing his mindset little by little by saying we should be our brother’s keepers, should love another (at least respect another) and care about our society too. Today He is going to let us know about forgiveness. I guess we all have been to confession at one time or other. How do we feel if we were told “Sorry, you have used up your quota”. Pretty embarrassing, right? We might close all the relationship with the church at that very moment. Don’t we expect that every single time we genuinely repent we can renew our relationship with God? That is what Jesus is trying to address us today. Jesus is simply telling us that, if we are to be his followers, we must act on the same basis with other people. To get to this point Jesus speaks of a king and his two servants who owe very different amounts of money. The message is perfectly clear: “And that is how my Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” We all will say, it is good to say but hard to practice. Yes of course. I do agree. No one can do that, except we have the power from above. Simply we can say if we can do this it is a miracle. In order to understand this we have to go back to the answer of the Peter “who Jesus is”. Peter correctly answered “You are the Messiah son of the living God”. As we discussed three weeks ago have we identified “Real Jesus”? Have we found the final answer for our question “Who Jesus is?”. Have we called the help line “Holy Spirit”? He will be the real strength to forgive one another. Every time we say the Lord’s Prayer we commit ourselves to this: “Forgive us our sins JUST AS we forgive those who sin against us.” It is indeed a courageous prayer to make. Do we really mean what we say? Do we even think about it when we pray it? It is worth to make couple of extra comments too. Forgiveness does not mean turning a blind eye to a person who keeps on hurting us. Forgiveness is more than just saying words; it involves the restoring of a broken relationship. It involves the healing of both sides. It may be necessary to make some proactive but totally non-violent response. Forgiveness is not purely a unilateral act. It is only complete when there is reconciliation between the two parties. It is difficult for me fully to forgive when the other party remains totally unrepentant. Even God’s forgiveness cannot get through in such circumstances (remember the Prodigal Son whose healing only began when he came to his senses and returned to his Father). The injured party has to work on bringing about a healing of the wound of division between both sides. Only then is the forgiveness complete. That may take a long time. It is important to note that our faith is not simply a question of good and bad actions but of relationships. Forgiveness is not about undoing evil actions (what is done is done and cannot be undone) but of restoring broken relationships, about healing and reconciliation. Just as we expect God to accept us back into his loving arms again and again without limit (just like we want to use confessional at our disposal), so he expects us to be ready to do the same for others. Of course, it can be a long process (Maybe this is why Jesus set such a high countless limit for number of times to forgive). Like God, like the Father in the parable, we often have to wait patiently, lovingly, hopefully for the turning point of someone who has hurt us. We cannot stop associating with him. As the Gospel earlier this week reminded us, those who have hurt us, our “enemies” (it is the way we want to handle them), most need our prayers, they need God’s blessings to soften their hearts. And, when it happens, we need to be ready to receive back our brother or sister just we expect God to receive us back when we say ‘Sorry’ to him.
