SCHOOL STAFFING

As a result of Miss Griffin’s illness (see right). We have made a few changes to our staffing structures to ensure least disruption to classes and students’ learning. These include: Mrs de Peralta will remain

on 5/6D for the remainder of the year.

Miss Tovo will remain teaching with Mrs Workman on 3/4W when she returns from her honeymoon, mid Term 2.

Mrs Vaessen will remain on KG with our new Assistant Principal form Term 2 for the rest of the year.

Miss Tovo will also join the Learning and Support team to replace Mrs Vaessen to ensure these valuable programs continue for our students.

We are very confident that these changes will be a smooth transition for all students and staff affected.

MISS GRIFFIN’S HEALTH

Dear parents and carers,

Over the last few months Miss Griffin received news that she had inherited a recessive gene kidney disease, which is quite rare. After intensive testing and treatment, Miss Griffin returned to school with a health care plan that outlined the need for a kidney transplant in the future. It was envisaged that the current medical treatment she was receiving would be sustainable for quite some time (even years).

Recently, Miss Griffin developed an infection that had a detrimental effect on her kidneys, at this point in time her kidney function became critical.

This week, Miss Griffin went into renal failure and has been airlifted to Sydney with the plan to start emergency dialysis immediately. She will also need to receive a kidney transplant as soon as a compatible donor is found.

As a school we have restructuring our staffing to accommodate the KG students with the least amount of disruption possible. Miss Griffin’s teaching program is complete so the level of learning and class routines will not be disrupted.

I know you will join with me in wishing Miss Griffin well on this unexpected journey. Certainly the Hanwood Public School team send their thoughts and love to her during this very trying time.

Mrs Jill Vaessen will be taking the KG class for the remainder of the week. The KG parents today will receive an outline of the staffing that has been put in place for their children.

We cannot wait to have Miss Griffin back at our school when she is fit and well.

Kind regards,

Monica St Baker Principal

UNIFORM SHOP UPDATE FEBRUARY 2020

How long do we have to change over? There is a 24 month process of change over before the “new” uniform will be compulsory. The school has a current contract with Lowes and Lowes need to be able to sell out their garments. Lowes have reduced the prices of the current uniform to $10 to clear all of their remaining stock. Where can we buy our uniform from? The school’s polo and jumper are available from the school’s P&C Uniform Shop. Pants, shorts, skorts and culottes are staying the same – Grey for boys and Navy for girls. You can purchase these from wherever it suits you – Lowes, Best and Less, Kmart, Target or online stores. The dress is still being researched and at present we haven’t found a solution. Family feedback will be obtained when we find a suitable option. The creation of the new Uniform Shop is another way for our P&C to fundraise, but also makes our uniform more affordable for our families. What time is the uniform shop open? Term 1 opening hours will be Tuesday mornings 9:30 till 10:00 and Thursday afternoons 3:00 till 4:00 in the Technology Room. (Each term the opening times will be reviewed to see what suits best.) The second Tuesday of the month from 5pm till 6pm (Just before the monthly P&C Meeting) If you are able to assist on either of these days, please let the school office know and you can be placed on the roster. I can’t always get to the school – how will I get my child’s uniform? An order form can be downloaded from the school’s website or from the newsletter, please send the form into the school for the order to be packed and sent home. Payment MUST accompany the order this can be via bank transfer into the P&C’s bank details (on the form), cash (correct money) or EFTPOS. Orders will be packed (Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons) ready for pick up or sent home with your child, please advise which option would suit you (pick up or sent home) I have purchased a uniform and now have an issue. Please refer to your original invoice which has our exchange and refund policy on the reverse. If the merchandise is faulty, upon presentation of your proof of purchase and the merchandise within a reasonable time frame, we will seek repair from the supplier. Goods must be returned to the school with an explanation of what has happened.

ITALIAN - MRS VIOLI

Welcome back to another year of Italian!

Classes have settled in well to our routine and Year 3 students are gradually getting used to the routine in our primary Italian classes.

Stage 2 classes have started a unit titled ‘I giorni, I mesi e il tempo’, which is based on the days of the week, the months of the year and the weather. In this unit, they will be learning about these areas as well as incidental yet interesting cultural information related to them. During the unit, we will be learning songs and playing games to reinforce the learning that is required.

Stage 3 classes have started a unit titled ‘Sono io’ which will be covering different aspects of themselves. They will be learning to describe themselves through physical features, as well as learning an array of adjectives that can be used to describe oneself. Throughout the unit we will also be covering many other aspects of their daily life, like their likes and dislikes focussed around after school activities, foods, sports and free time activities at home.

3/4Y - MR YOUNG

“Creative” and “interesting” are two of the many words you could use to describe the work going on in 3/4Y this year. Our latest task of creating Claymation movies provides the clearest example of what I mean. To do this, 3/4Y first have been working hard to create narrative writing stories that not only provide characters that have incredible stories with ingenious solutions to the problems we never knew existed. With some careful editing skills and reviewing, the results have been outstanding! The next step in our process is making these amazing stories come to life! With inspiration from Wallace and Gromit, along with Early Man, 3/4Y have started learning the process of transforming written stories to film. This includes creating story boards, building settings and eventually filming with students reading their scripts as voice overs. If there is anyone in the community who has any type of play dough or any clay material that they would like to donate to Stage 2 to help our Claymation stories come to life, it would be very much appreciated! A further note will follow to all Stage 2 parents.

INTRODUCING… MRS NATASHA LONG

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

This year we will be holding our schools Clean Up Australia Day on Friday the 28th February. All children are welcome to bring in a pair of disposable gloves and a garbage bag to help clean up our village and school. The younger students will help in cleaning our school grounds, while the older students will clean some of the surrounding streets of Hanwood.

1/2CL - MRS CATANZARITI & MRS LONG

1/2CL has settled well in Term 1. Mrs Cat and Mrs Long have enjoyed meeting

parents and will hopefully meet everyone at the information evening in week 7.

1/2CL have been enjoying our weekly sports rotations, during this time the children

have learnt some of the skills involved in a variety of sports including tennis,

basketball, football, bocce`, and fundamental movement skills.

As part of our Australia unit we have been reading some amazing books and poetry

on Australian animals and themes we are learning more and more about our

country and where we live.

In maths, we have been talking about what mathematicians do when solving

problems, lots of our students are always eager to show both Mrs Cat and Mrs

Long their solving strategies.

In Science, the children have been learning about Australian animals and their

needs. They have been designing a bird feeder. We would really appreciate your

empty food containers/boxes for them to make their feeder.
