2. DESCRIPTION

The JTT Electronics Telecom UPS battery pack is a reliable, intelligent power source for UPS and backup battery systems. This standalone lithium-ion battery pack comes fully equipped with cells specifically chosen for optimum performance in this application. It requires no additional current sensor or external relays, and can be connected in parallel to other JTT Electronics Telecom UPS battery packs. Normal operation consumes very little power for battery pack monitoring, and low power mode uses even less. Battery pack SOC (State of Charge) is indicated by 4 LEDs on the front of the battery pack. The two additional LEDs indicate run and alarm status, respectively. The integrated T-Series BMS controller is designed to connect with a wide variety of equipment loads. By utilizing ASC technology (adaptive smart connect) our BMS ensures safe and reliable connections to both capacitive and resistive dominant loads, handling charger surge and inrush currents safely and intelligently without interfering with short circuit detection. The battery pack is also equipped with reverse protection to prevent equipment damage in the event of miswiring. In extreme operating conditions, the battery pack is designed to disconnect from the system using its solid state relay. This helps ensure safe operation and protects the battery pack. If it becomes safe to do so, the IAR (intelligent automatic reconnect) system will reconnect the pack and resume normal operations.

The BMS balances cell charges to maximize runtime and extend battery pack life. To accomplish this, energy is discharged from the cells with the highest charge in the pack. The BMS also monitors cell and pack conditions, logging alarms and lifetime cell data in its memory. The BMS can communicate battery fault conditions, cell status information, and battery data via the battery pack's diagnostic RS-232 and configurable RS-485. This information can be sent to displays, monitoring systems, or other devices depending on the application. All battery pack information is available at any time via diagnostic RS-232 with our BMS Link software for real-time battery monitoring, data logging, and troubleshooting. The integrated BMS runs over 30 diagnostic checks 10 times per second, monitoring individual cell as well as battery pack conditions. Most of these diagnostics help ensure safe operation of the battery pack, while others monitor battery performance and lifetime.

4. OPERATIONS

ONBOARD SOLID STATE RELAY

The onboard solid state relay automatically connects the battery to the system in appropriate conditions and allows up to 50 A continuous charge or discharge current. In the event of unsafe conditions, the integrated BMS will automatically disconnect the battery pack from the system using the internal safety relay. The relay provides integrated short circuit detection with quick response (100 µs). ONBOARD CURRENT MONITORING

This onboard, high-precision and temperature-stable sensor allows accurate SOC (State of Charge) calculations in all operating conditions. The intelligent current sensor monitors for charge and discharge overcurrent events and triggers a disconnection from the system if necessary. LOW POWER MODE

When idle, the battery pack will automatically enter low power mode to reduce power consumption. In this mode the integrated BMS consumes as little as 6 mA from the battery. MANUAL ON/OFF PUSH BUTTON

An on/off push button provides simple, manual control over battery pack run state. AUTOMATIC LOW BATTERY POWER-OFF

In addition to the manual power button, the battery pack will automatically power off if the cells are over-discharged to prevent any permanent performance loss. The battery pack will need to be charged within 3 months of entering this mode to ensure optimum cell performance.

PASSIVE CELL BALANCING

The integrated BMS intelligently balances cells by discharging energy at 50 mA (typical) from the cells with the highest charge levels. A well balanced battery pack will have higher capacity and longer runtime than an unbalanced one. Maintaining an equal charge between cells in a battery pack ensures that cells with slightly weaker performance are not degraded further by over-charging or over-discharging during operation. ASC (ADAPTIVE SMART CONNECT)

Our ASC technology allows the onboard solid state relay to intelligently connect the battery pack to its load or charger by recognizing and adapting to the characteristics of any surge or inrush currents. The BMS manages these conditions safely to ensure reliable pack-to-system connections. IAR (INTELLIGENT AUTOMATIC RECONNECT)

Following a battery pack disconnection, the T-Series BMS will monitor both external and internal conditions. If conditions are suitable, the BMS will reconnect the battery pack to the system and resume normal operations. This IAR system results in greater battery pack availability following a safety disconnect.

ALARM MONITORING AND REPORTING

Over 30 alarm conditions are evaluated at 10 times per second to ensure safe battery operation, and maximize battery pack performance and lifetime. Alarm thresholds can be customized for the application or operate with default settings. Alarm status is indicated on the LED display panel. Alarm status may be reported in greater detail via RS-485 or RS-232. CELL VOLTAGE MONITORING

Accurate voltage measurement of all cells allows for highly precise SOC calculations. The integrated BMS measures cell voltages every 50 ms with a resolution of 1.5 mV. The high frequency voltage measurements also ensure a fast-response to overvoltage and undervoltage events.

CELL TEMPERATURE MONITORING

Temperature monitoring of each cell module ensures that battery pack safety is always maintained. Over temperature conditions will result in battery pack disconnection. Each of the four cell modules has its own dedicated temperature sensor. CONFIGURABLE COMMUNICATIONS

Isolated RS-485 can be configured as required for any proprietary or standard communications protocol such as ASCII or Modbus. Communications can be to external components such as displays, monitoring devices, and DC chargers. COMPREHENSIVE PC/LAPTOP DIAGNOSTICS

Connecting a PC or laptop with the JTT BMS Link software tool (page 13) to the diagnostic RS-232 allows complete real-time monitoring of the battery pack and access to alarm history and cell lifetime data.

6. TYPICAL APPLICATION

The JTT Electronics Telecom UPS battery pack is generally used in low voltage UPS, battery backup and load leveling systems. Depending on the specific application the overall system can be configured differently.

The following example shows the battery pack integrated into a system with a 48 V 25 A charger, a monitoring station, and equipment load.
