Work Area

• Work Areas are those spaces in a building where occupants interact with their telecommunications devices.

• Work Area elements are situated between the Horizontal cabling system end point on the Telecommunications Outlet and Work Area active equipment.

• The Work Area cabling system efficiency has a great impact on the distribution system operation.

• The special feature of the Work Area cabling system is its versatility and ability to introduce changes easily.

Work Area

• Work Area elements are:

– Telecommunications Outlet or Multiuser Telecommunications Outlet,

– Equipment cables (cords),

– Adapters, converters, couplers/splitters,

– Telecommunications equipment (telephones, computers, modems, terminals, etc.).

• Active telecommunications equipment and adapters (converters, couplers) are not considered part of the telecommunications cabling system and are not included into the Signamax Cabling System.

Telecommunications Outlet

• Telecommunications Outlet/connector is a fixed connecting device where the horizontal cable terminates.

• The Telecommunications Outlet/connector provides the interface to the Work Area cabling.

• The Telecommunications Outlet/connector in the Work Area is the point at which end-user equipment "plugs into" the building telecommunications utility formed by the pathway, space, and building cabling system.

• The Telecommunications Outlet/connector at the same time is an element of the Work Area and Horizontal subsystem.

2The SC and LC type adapters are recommended for use in Telecommunications Outlets at the Work Areas of the Signamax Cabling System.

3It is not recommended to use ST type adaptersin Telecommunications Outlets at the Work Areasof the Signamax Cabling System.Their use should be limited to those cases when optical fiber connecting hardware with ST type connectors is already installed in the cabling system.

6 Twisted-pair and optical fiber equipment cords used to connect active equipment to the Telecommunications Outlet at the Work Area in the Horizontal cabling subsystem Channel model shall meet the requirements given in section “4.3 Equipment and patch cords” ofthe SCS Manual.

Equipment Cords

• All other types of equipment cords which do not meet requirement 6 and are not included in the Signamax Cabling System Approved Component Schedule, are considered to be adapters (devices supporting operation of specific applications), can be used to connect active equipment of the Work Area to the Horizontal cabling subsystem, but are not covered by the Signamax Cabling System warranty and any malfunctions of the telecommunications system operation caused by these cords do not fall within Signamax warranty obligations.

Adapters

• When used, cabling adapters in the Work Area may degrade the transmission performance of the telecommunications cabling system.

• Therefore, their compatibility with premises cabling, equipment, and applications must be considered before they are connected to the telecommunications network.

7 Specialized devices designed to support specific applications shall not be used as part of the Horizontal cabling subsystem of the Signamax Cabling System, and, in case of application they shall be kept external to the Telecommunications Outlet.

• The mounting box of the Telecommunications Outlet is an intermediate element between the Horizontal subsystem cable and the Work Area cable.

• The following are the most widely used ways to install the mounting boxes:

– in or on the wall (or on any surface applicable for mounting)

– in the perimetral pathway (cable raceway)

– in the furniture pathway

– on the flexible hose or conduit

Telecommunications Room

• Telecommunications Rooms (TRs) offer many different functions to the cabling system and are often considered as a distinct subsystem within the hierarchical cabling system.

• The most important function of a Telecommunications Room is the termination of Horizontal and Backbone subsystem cables to compatible connecting hardware.

• A Telecommunications Room may also includethe Intermediate Cross-connect or the Main Cross-connect for different parts of the Backbone cabling subsystem.

Telecommunications Room

• A Telecommunications Room provides the means for administration and routing of the equipment cables/cords from the Horizontal Cross-connect to the telecommunications equipment.

• In some cases, the Demarcation Point and associated protection apparatus may also be located inthe Telecommunications Room.

• A Telecommunications Room also provides a controlled environment to house telecommunications equipment, connecting hardware, and splice closures serving a part of the building.

3 In the Horizontal Cross-connect of the Signamax Cabling System located in the Telecommunications Room the cross-connection method shall be applied to connect active equipment with multiport connectors to the Horizontal cabling subsystem and to provide passive connection between cable segments of the Horizontal and Backbone subsystems.

Equipment Room

• The main function of the telecommunications Equipment Room is to provide a specially equipped area to terminate Backbone subsystem cables on connecting hardware of the Main and Intermediate Cross-connects.

• Equipment Rooms (ERs) are considered different from Telecommunications Rooms because of the nature or complexity of the equipment contained in them.

• An Equipment Room may provide any or all of the functions of a Telecommunications Room or Entrance Facility.

Equipment Room

• An Equipment Room provides a controlled environment to house telecommunications equipment, connecting hardware, splice closures, grounding and bonding facilities, and protection apparatus where applicable.

• An Equipment Room may also house equipment terminations (and may contain Horizontal subsystem terminations for a part of the building).

• In many cases, the Equipment Room has access provider trunk terminations, premises network terminations, Demarcation Point (DP), and auxiliary terminations.

Doors

11To ensure telecommunications equipment deliverythe Entrance Facility door should be at least90 cm (36 in) wide and 2 m (80 in) high, have no threshold, be outward-opening, sliding, or removable, equipped with a lock, and have restricted access for authorized personnel only.

If large equipment will be delivered to the Entrance Facility, a double door (1.8 m (72 in) wide by2.3 m (90 in) high) without doorsill and center post should be used.

Power Supply System

12A minimum of two dedicated 120–240-V nominal,20-A rated, non-switched, ac duplex electrical outlet receptacles, each on a separate 20-A branch circuit, shall be provided in the Entrance Facility forequipment power.

Grounding and Protection

10 Safety grounding system of the Telecommunications Room shall comply with requirements of appropriate codes.

13To ensure normal operation of the telecommunications systems an access to telecommunications bondingand grounding system should be provided inthe Telecommunications Room.

12 The Entrance Facility shall be located at such distance from the electromagnetic interference sources,which ensures that there is no negative impacton the telecommunications system operation.

Water Infiltration

• The Entrance Facility should not be located below water level unless preventive measures against water infiltration are taken.

• The room shall be free of water or drain pipes not directly required in support of the equipment within the room.

• A floor drain should be provided within the room if there isa risk of water ingress.
