    Telegraph Road Interchange Reconstruction

Roadway construction of the Telegraph Road interchange of the Capital Beltway (I-95/495) started in February2008. The new ramps and roadways will improve traffic flow for the 46,000 motorists who travel theinterchange daily. This work represents the final major component of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project and

will be substantially complete in 2012.

Work is progressing in phases. Among the changes already complete are:

    new ramps to Huntington Avenue and North Kings Highway from the Beltway Outer Loop andTelegraph Road South, which eliminate left-turns and separate cross traffic;

    a new ramp from the Beltway Inner Loop directly to Pershing Avenue;

widened parts of the Beltway to accommodate the future thru and local lanes configuration; and

construction of all possible portions of the new ramps out of the path of current traffic.

The next phase, which starts this spring, requires the demolition of existing exit ramps in order to complete thenew ones. Construction will temporarily impact traffic and alter the configuration to which drivers are currently

accustomed. Advance information for local residents and commuters will help them adjust to the temporarychanges. Motorists can expect increased transit times at rush hours during this temporary configuration.

New Ramps PreviewThree new ramps (red in the adjoining map) will significantly improve traffic flow from the Beltway Outer Loopand Telegraph Road North to points north of the Beltway:

    Benefits

Upon completion, the new ramps will:

Provide previously unavailable direct access to Eisenhower

Avenue from Telegraph Road North and the Outer Loop.

Decrease traffic volume on Telegraph Road North andPershing Avenue.

Improve vehicle flow and safety by eliminating the traffic

weave at Telegraph Road and Pershing Avenue.

Include new bike and pedestrian paths that provide access to

Eisenhower Avenue from south of the Beltway.

    Ramp Configuration Spring 2010

As soon as weather permits, traffic will switch to this configuration: (letters above apply to descriptions below)

Close both exits from the Inner and Outer Loops of the Beltway to Telegraph Road North (Xs above).

Open a temporary detour from the Outer Loop to Telegraph Road North:

A Exit the Outer Loop via the existing Telegraph Road South exit and a temporary detour ramp

parallel to the Huntington Avenue exit ramp.

B Turn left at a traffic signal onto Telegraph Road North.

C Traffic bound for Duke Street via Telegraph Road North will proceed without interruption.

D Eisenhower Valley traffic uses a right turn only lane to Pershing Avenue, controlled by a temporarytraffic signal.

Open another temporary detour from the Inner Loop to Telegraph Road North:

E Exiting traffic will use the current exit ramp from the Inner Loop to Pershing Avenue.

F Traffic headed to Telegraph Road North will bear left and come to a temporary traffic signal.

Pershing Avenue traffic turning onto Telegraph Road North will also be controlled by a temporary traffic

signal. This signal and the one at D will be green while the signal at F is red, and vice versa.

Outer Loop traffic bound for the Eisenhower Valley takes the same temporary detour ramp

and left turn at Telegraph, then turns right onto the new ramp to Eisenhower Avenue (C).Signs on the temporary detour ramp will identify which lane to use.

Inner Loop traffic to Telegraph Road North will continue to use the temporary exit via the

ramp from the Inner Loop to Pershing Avenue (D), but can freely flow onto Telegraph Road

North without a traffic signal (E).

The new bike and pedestrian path opens, connecting neighborhoods south of the Capital

    Beltway to Eisenhower Avenue.
