ANGEROUS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Haurds This data sheet i s based on a consideration of [he properlies of the constitueds.

Harmful by inhalation. High exposures by inhalation will cause anaesthetic effects. This may result in a loss of consciousness and could prove fatal if exposure has been severe. Repeated andlor prolonged sbn contact may cause reddening, burning and blisters. Repeated exposure to levels well above the occupational exposure limit may produce adverse effects on the liver and kidneys. Perchloroethylene has been shown 20 cause cancer in rodents, but this is by a mechanism of little or no relevance to man, even at high exposure levels. Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse ef'fects in the aquatic environment. Wclding or cutting should no1 be carried out on any vessel likely to contain solvent as toxic and corrosive decomposition products (hydrogen chlohdc) can be formed.

4. FIRST-A ID M EASPIRFC

Inhalation: Remove paiient horn exposure, keep warm and at rest. DO NOT walk the patient aboui. Administer oxygen i f necessary. Apply artificial respiral ion i f breatlling has c e n ~ t d or shows signs of failing. During resuscitation. care must be kaktn to avoid contaminatton by h e substance from the pa ti en^. Obrain immediate medical atlenrion.

Skin Contact; Remwe contaminated clothing. Wash skin with soap and water. If symproms develop, obtain medical attention.

4

EyeConiac~: Immediately irrigate with eyewash solution or clean waler, holding the eyelids apart, for at least 10 minutes. Obtain medical attention.

Ingestion: Provided the patienl is conscious, wash out mouth with water and ~ v e 200-300 ml (hatfa pint) of water to drink. Obtain immediate; medical attention.

Further Medical Treatment Symptomatic treatment and supportive therapy as indicated. Adrenaline and similar sympathomimctic drugs should be avoided following exposure as cardiac arrhythmia may result wirh possible subsequent cardiac arrest. Gastric lavage may be effective

9 n r P should prefesably be undertaken within E hour. Aspiration of this material into ihc lungs should be avoided. Following lgestion adsorbents such as activated charcoal may be of value.

5. IFI&FIGHTING MEASURES

Non-flammable. Welding or cutting shmld not he a n i e d out on any vessel likcly to co~train solvent as toxic and corrosive decomposition products (hydrogen chloride) can be Formed, Containers may burst if overheated.

Extinguishing Media: Keep fire exposed containers cool by spraying with water.

Fire Fighting Protective Equipment: A self contained breathing appantus and full pmtcctivc clothing must be worn in fire conditions.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

P d d t d it is sak to do so. isolate the source of the leak. E m r e suitable personal protection (including respiratory protection) during remva! of spillages.

311 spillages: Adsorb spilIagts onto sand, earth or any suitable adsorbent material. Tmnsfet to acontainer for disposal or I lddvcry. Large spillages: Contain spillages with sand, earth or any sui~able adsorbent material. Do nod allow to enter drains, sewers or watercourses. Spillages or uncontrolled discharges into watercourses must be alerted lo the Environment Agenq or other appropriate regulatory body.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.3 HANDLING Qo not brea~he vapour. Use only in well vmrilared areas. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. The vapour is heavier than air and may reach dangerously high concentrations in pits, lanks, and other confined spaces. In such cases provide adequate ventilation or wear suitable respiratory protective equipment w~rh positive air supply. Avoid contact with naked flames and hot surfaces as toxic and corrosive decomposition produc~s (hydrogen chloside) can be fomcd. h not weld in the presence of v e p u n a s toxic decomposition products (hydrogen chloride) may be formed. When using do not smoke.

7.2 STORAGE Conraintrs should be of mild steel, or amber or dark green solvent resistant plastic or glass. Keep away from direct sun1 ight. Keep container dry. Keep in a cool, well ventilated place. Keep away from heat, sources o f ignition and direct sunlight. All bulk storage vessels should be made of steel and require a suitable vent or pressure relief valve and secondary containment lo prevent uncontrolled losses from accidenral relcase, Do not use aluminium or i ts a l l oy in the construction of storage vessels, pipework and ancillary equipment, including internal components c.g. pump impellers. Storage tanks should be bunded to accomodalt 1 E 0% o f t he tank volume. Use of galvanised components should be avoided because of the risk of producing highly toxic dichforoacetylene.

8. EXPOSURE CO NTROWPERSONAL PROTECHON 1

Wear suitable protective clothing and gtoves. NitriIe rubber is better than PVC. Glovs should be changed regularly to avoid pemmtion problems. Gloves should be changed if excessive exposure has occurred. Wear eyelface protection. Atmospheric levels should be control led in compliance with the occupational exposure limit. Wear suitable respiralory protective equipment ifbexposure to levels above the occupational exposure limit is likely. Positive air supplied WE is recommended.

mis health hazard assessment IS based on a consideration of the composition of this produc~.

lnhslatian W igll atmospheric concentrations will lead lo anaesthetic effects and adverse effects on the cen~wl nervous syslern. S p p t o m s may include lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting and headache. Exposure to concentrations of the order of SOQppm for shon per~odsof rimc (e.g. 5 minutes) may lead to lightheadedness or dizziness. Very hi$ concentrations may result En a loss of consciousness. Very high expDswres may cause an abnormal heart rhythm and prove suddenly fatal.

8 Skin Costact Irritating to skin. Will remove the namral messes resulting in dryness, crocking and denmaritis. Repeared and/or prolonged skin contact may cause reddening, burning and blisters. Can be absorbed through skin but not in sufffcient amounts to cause adverse effects.

Eye Contact Liquid splashes and high concentrations ofvapour may cauv irritation. Permanent damage i s unlikely.

Ingestion The swallowing of small splash- is unlikely to cause any adverse effects. Large amounts may cause internal irritation, nausea. vomiting and may Iead to drowsiness and unconsciousness.

J" ~ n g Term Exposure

Repeated exposure to levels well above the mupatianal exposure limit may produce adverse effects on the liver and kidncys. PerchIoracthylene has heen associated with anccr in rodents.
