Condition-based monitoring and train control
Data mining is drastically changing the transport landscape. Patterns in large data sets can give away key information for efficiency gains: reducing the number of failures, the amount of unplanned maintenance and the required level of reserve asset capacity.
Discover how the COSAMIRA system can help you to monitor and control your trains.
5
Condition-based monitoringGain insight into the real-time operational condition of tracks and trains.
From these campaigns you will learn:
» Which parts are most susceptible to wear and tear and what the failure modes are
» To move from preventive to predictive maintenance
» How you can optimize the maintenance cycle of your fleet.
Detect problems at an early stage
Invisible damage can easily lead to costly failures
Railway vehicles are continuously subject to weather and operational conditions that can include violent shocks, temperature extremes and water ingress.
Maintenance is crucial to prevent an issue that can easily lead to a failure in the continuing operation of the vehicle or increased stress for the vehicle subsystems.
With much of the damage not visible at an early stage the consequences can quickly be higher maintenance costs and very real safety risks.
The benefits of locating problems in a smarter, faster and cost-efficient way even before they manifest themselves are clear.

Discover different measuring tools
Measure temperature, vibration and other parameters
Televic Rail provides measurement tools to detect deviations in critical system status based on temperature, vibration and other parameters.
The Televic sensor systems are placed in the optimal position to gain insight into the real-time operational condition of your fleet, enabling a fleet manager to effectively plan preventive maintenance rather than perform emergency repairs.

Wheel and axle bearing monitoring
Track monitoring
Equipment analysis
Damage to tracks
» Detect track joint issues, ripples and track wear.
» Quickly signaling what track locations need maintenance, preventing damage and reducing the operational costs of your fleet.
» Tracks in good condition enable trains to run in a safe, economic and comfortable way.
Damage to trains
» Detect wheel flats or damage to bearings at an early stage to prevent damage to the whole train infrastructure.
» Optimal pre-failure maintenance of the wheels and axle bearings significantly increases the lifetime of tracks and trains.
7
The data generation afforded by COSAMIRA will allow you to address all issues from a single operational problem up to the entire fleet maintenance cycle.
Televic Rail will assist you in determining the configuration parameters and help you to understand the data generated by the application of rail specific maintenance algorithms.
Motor monitoring
Gearbox monitoring
Gearbox data
» Real-time analysis of operational data to detect operational stresses and predict failure points.
Eccentric motor modes
» Detect eccentric motor modes or excessive motor temperatures, for example caused by motor ventilation issues.

Bogie control systemsInfluence important processes to improve the agility of your fleet.
Control actuators with the feedback from the sensors to:
» avoid wear and tear » shorten travel times » guarantee passenger comfort and safety
Tilting
Detect turns in the trajectory
To enable trains to tilt when entering a bend, Televic Rail has designed a bogie sensor system detecting turns in the trajectory.
The sensors measure the tilting behavior and monitor aspects like uneven tilt, wheel unloading and gauge infringement.
Virgin Super Voyager
In 1996 Televic Rail’s first tilting system was taken into service on the Virgin Super voyager trains in the UK as well as on the NSB (Norwegian State Railways) trains in Norway. In total 382 cars have been provided with this system. Up to today, Televic still maintains the tilting equipment of these projects.

Active Radial Steering
Steering wheelsets
COSAMIRA is also used to steer the wheels of the bogie, decreasing rail and wheel friction. The sensors measure lateral wheel acceleration and use this data to control the actuator steering the wheelsets.
Regina trains
The Active Radial Steering system has been demonstrated on Bombardier Regina trains in Sweden and has been an important showcase as part of Bombardiers Flexx bogie on Innotrans, the most important railway fair in the world.
This shows the importance of Televic Rail as an R&D partner of Bombardier in one of its most innovative products. Televic Rail designed and delivered the wheel axle lateral accelerometer sensors, the sensor gateways and the controller platform for this system.
10
Passenger comfort measurement
Shocks and vibrations
Ride comfort is essential for passenger satisfaction. The COSAMIRA system maps out the exposure to shocks and vibrations, providing an objective tool to measure and improve the passenger comfort on your fleet.
The data can be used to actively move the car bodies in lateral direction (active lateral suspension), reducing shocks and discomfort.
Twindexx trains
This system is applied on current Bombardier projects with SBB Swiss Twindexx trains as on the Zefiro 250 trains in Italy. Together about 836 cars are equipped with lateral accelerometers, sensor gateways and controllers delivered by Televic Rail.

Tested and proven for safetyImprove the overall safety of your fleet.
Testing is vitally important
Bogie hunting
The dangers of bogie hunting are well recognised and on high speed trains the effect can be catastrophic.
Televic systems are proven to quickly and accurately detect this anomaly while providing warnings to crew and offering remedial stability of the system.

Safety and Integrity Level 2
Risk reduction
The Instability Monitoring System and the Total Tilting Failure Recognition are compliant to Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2).
Televic Rail has delivered more than 3000 of these systems for Zefiro China and Zefiro Italy.

Bogie Monitoring Unit
Sensors
Instability Monitoring System
The railway compliant bogie sensors are designed to measure temperatures and high bandwidth vibration.
This allows accurate monitoring of bogie critical parts like wheel axle bearings, transmissions and motors. Televic Rail can deliver tailored sensor harnesses allowing for easy bogie installation.
The robust Bogie Monitoring Unit enables high performance monitoring of bogie-related characteristics.
The unit contains built-in sensors and interfaces with a wide variety of external industry standard sensors. In that way it enables a wide range of applications such as wheel flat monitoring, bogie hunting, gearbox monitoring and passenger comfort measurement. The measured data is processed and stored centrally for optimal usage.
The Instability Monitoring system for high speed trains measures lateral acceleration to detect bogie hunting.
When deviations are detected the system warns Train Control Management Systems or the driver that speed reduction is required. The unit complies with the most demanding railway and safety standards and best practices.

Software
Train Side Server
The Train Side Server is a key element for data logging, wayside synchronization and algorithm deployment.
COSAMIRA can provide a highly accurate geographical position allowing for locating track issues in an extremely accurate way.
To turn the sensor data into useful business data, the software suite facilitates interpretation and visualization of data via programmable dashboard and generates triggers to other systems. An open interface permits easy linking to other information systems such as platforms for maintenance and reporting.
