2016
In the year of SAIT’s centennial, we lived online — at least it felt like we didEverybody and their mom had a Facebook profile, teens and with-it adults were posting pics on Instagram, and Twitter was an open mic for comics writing bits in 140 characters or less. Oh, and Snapchat was by far the fastest-growing social platform, but hardly any of us over the age of 35 had joined yet.
Because SAIT said so much online during our centennial year, we decided to capture some of it in an old-school book to be buried with the 2016 time capsule. The digital realm is evolving fast and we want to show the future what social media looked like the year we turned 100.
QUESTION
ONEI t ’s tough to imagine what 2116/17 wil l look l ike, especial ly s ince we’re embarking on the age of the Internet of things — a.k.a. the fourth industr ial revolution, when so much is expected to change.
We asked our social media fol lowers to offer predict ions about l i fe in the future. Their responses were certainly diverse.
“HOW WI LL L I FE I N CALG ARY BE DIFFERENT IN 100 YEARS? POS T YOUR ANS WER IN THECOMMENTS BELOW AND WE’LL PRESERVE YOU R IDEA I NS I DE OUR TI ME CAPSULE — TO BE OPENED I N 2116!”
...AND HERE’S
WHAT THEY SAID:
QUESTION
TWOWhat message can we pass on to future? In 100 years, humans
wil l be r ich with experience. Theoretical ly, they should be f itter, happier and more productive than us folks back in 2016/17.
That didn’t stop SAIT’s onl ine community from weighing in with advice, opinions, and well wishes for the future.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE L IVING IN THE YEA R 2116 TO KNOW? TWEET US AND ANDWE’LL INCLUDE IT IN OUR TIME CAPSULE.”
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN
Our world is digital and we love technology. We fall asleep and wake up next to a device that connects to the Internet and all it has to
offer. But if we leave an iPhone in the time capsule for 100 years, the battery will be dead and leaking l ithium by the time anyone gets
to it . So, if we can’t send our best and brightest technology, what should we send? The SAIT community had some ideas.
QUESTION
THREE
“W E N E ED YOUR HELP. WHAT SHOULD WE PUT I NS I DE THE T I ME CAPSULE? COMMENT WITH YO UR S UGGE S TI O NS A ND W E’LL I NCLUDE THE ITEM AND/OR YO UR PO S T I N O UR TI ME CAPSULE — TO BE OPENED IN 100 YE A RS.”

We launched #SAITstory in April 2016 as part of SAIT’s centennial project. Each Tuesday, we used Instagram and Facebook to share the personal stories of our community members. Told through an authentic voice and featuring stories of success, vulnerability and everyday life, #SAITstory became a weekly inspiration for readers. These are the stories of the vibrant and diverse people who all share a piece of history at SAIT.

Debbie McCluskey Learning is life long — embrace and grow along with it. All the best!
SHOUTOUT!
We look forward to you looking backThe world is changing — it always has been, but the pace has increased lately. The only thing we can predict with near certainty is that in 100 years, people wil l observe our technology, our language, our c lothes and our state of mind and think how different things seem to be.
But we don’t think everything will be different. SAIT’s centennial gave us cause to look back at 1916 when we first opened our doors and, in some respects, a lot has stayed the same. As new technologies developed and new careers emerged, SAIT evolved to meet industry needs with the right skills at the right time — that much hasn’t changed in 100 years … and as far as we can tell, it won’t have changed in 100 more.
So, congrats on 200 years, SAIT! We hope your programs in teleporting technology, space shuttle mechanics and terraforming management are getting your students where they want to be … is it Mars? Everybody in 2116 wants to go to Mars, right?
