How to Create Your Own Luck, by Susan Roane

“How to Create Your Own Luck”, is the ‘You never know!” approach to networking, taking chances and opening yourself to opportunity. In it Roane identifies eight traits that people have who successfully create their own positive circumstances:

1. They talk to strangers.

2. They make small talk.

3. They drop names.

4. They listen and eavesdrop.

5. They ask for or offer help.

6. They stray from their chosen paths (or go outside their comfort zone).

7. They exit graciously without burning bridges.

8. They say yes when they want to say no.

Because “You Never Know” who might be the next stranger you can sit down and pass the time of day with, and you don’t know who they might know, it makes sense to open up yourself and be willing to meet the people who are serendipitously placed in your path.

The book has story after story to illustrate all of the traits, most of them along the lines of a chance encounter that—because that person was open and willing—led to a business deal, finding someone who knew someone, a job opportunity, a turn-about of good fortune and the opportunity to connect to powerful names or celebrities, plus more.

Says Roan, “I have a term for people who constantly open themselves to opportunity; I call them, ‘You Never Know It Alls.’ When we are open, we can see possibilities, seize them and transform them into valuable—and sometimes amusing—experiences.” The people we think of as “lucky” have mastered the art of openness and communication. They see the “You Never Know” possibilities that perfectly position them to take advantage of life’s coincidences. Roane outlines the simple strategies those “lucky” people implement every day to take control of their own professional and personal destinies.

Unless you turn and talk to the person sitting next to you at the doctor’s office, or waiting in line at the post office, or on that four hour plane trip, you never know if he or she could change your life, make it sweeter, or use what you have to offer.

City of Temecula temecula valley college anD vocational invitational

On Saturday, September 26th, the City of Temecula Community Services Department, the business community, local school districts, colleges and schools joined efforts in sponsoring the first annual Temecula Valley College and Vocational Invitational held at the Promenade Mall. The event attracted thousands of prospective students and their families from throughout the

region. Representatives from over 100 colleges, military academies, as well as vocational and trade schools, both locally and nationally, were on hand to showcase their school, provide information and to answer questions.

At the end of the day it was truly apparent that the event was a resounding success! The overall benefits of this event were numerable.

Potential students and their families had an opportunity to gather information and explore options from schools of interest.

September is a great month to host an invitational! The timing of this event enabled many students looking to attend school next year an opportunity to gather final information within the timeframe necessary for end of the year application deadlines.

Many families and friends were able to participate in this event together. Some were interested in information for the very near future while others were inquiring in hopes of preparing an education and financial plan for years to come.

Over 100 higher education providers were present at one location at the same time in a local, convenient and inviting environment and many retailers benefited from the increased exposure this event provided.

Those represented were excited to be in Temecula and desired to help provide information and promote higher learning and education to our community.

The local community partnership involving the City of Temecula, nearby school districts and the business community together supported the vision of bringing valuable information regarding higher education, learning and opportunity to the entire valley.

It is important to note that this event was a direct outcome the goals

and objectives set forth in the Youth Master Plan that was approved approximately two years ago by the City of Temecula. The Youth Master Plan is a comprehensive strategic plan that is designed to identify and address the needs of young people. The plan clearly identifies the desire and the need for our young people to continue their learning beyond the high school years and to find ways for greater self sufficiency. We are proud to announce that the 1st Annual Temecula Valley College and Vocational Invitational did just that!

Page 9: Temecula Today - November/December

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce successfully represented the interests of its business community at all levels of government throughout the past year. The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce secured positions on state and federal legislation to protect investments in workers’ compensation reforms, affordable medical care for the region, and local city and agency funds.

“We continued to make sure our legislators at all levels of government understood what is important to our business community and provide each of our local legislators the position of the chamber on critical pieces of legislation,” stated Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Chamber. “Only through the hard work and dedication of our members and everyone involved in representing the Temecula business community’s interests were we successful at protecting the economic vitality during an otherwise tough economic year,” continued Sullivan.

The Temecula Valley Chamber involved many business people in its government affairs process. The Chamber assisted with a legislative summit with hundreds of business people in attendance to address critical needs of our community. The Chamber also lead a delegation of businesses to Sacramento to meet with key statewide decision-makers to discuss proposed laws that impact Temecula’s economy.

The Chamber will continue to monitor, discuss and take action on issues impacting the economic vitality of our community in the second half of the legislative session that begins in January 2010.

The following accomplishments are only the beginning to outlining a member’s return on investment in the Temecula Valley Chamber during the past year:

The Chamber tracked 35 potential new laws in 2009 that would have impacted our business community. The Chamber focused its efforts in the past year on the most critical potential laws that would impact the business community in a negative way. Over 40 different letters were sent to local state legislators, the Governor and other stakeholders on legislation and issues that would have impacted the Temecula Valley business community.

Opposed federal piece of legislation that aimed to establish a national commission to study state workers’ compensation laws and if passed would assemble a 14-person commission charged with studying and evaluating each State’s workers’ compensation laws when California has already enacted a fair and equitable system.

Supported Assembly Member Kevin Jeffries’ proposal to make the legislature more open to the public. ACA 8 would have allowed the public and organizations to comment on legislative proposals in State Legislature. A 72 hour notice would be required on any issue that comes before the Legislature and would have also allowed for more transparency in state government and put an end to back-room deals.

Opposed federal legislative proposal that would have mandated paid vacation for full and part-time employees. It is the first of its kind at the federal level and would have been costly to employers at a time when unemployment rates have continued to climb.

California is in its third year of a drought, supported a reasonable solution that will mitigate the initial outlay for any business willing to increase their conservation efforts.

Helped to secure needed transportation funding for the Southwest California region by urging U.S. Senator Boxer to support increasing the investment of federal transportation infrastructure funding from $27 billion to $50 billion when the economic stimulus package was issued.

The Chamber opposed raising taxes as it released its positions on the May 19, 2009 Special Election ballot propositions. The ballot propositions were part of the 2009-2010 state budget agreement between the Governor and Legislature designed to help balance the state budget through various increase in length of time of taxes, shifting of former voter-approved propositions and borrowing of funds from future state lottery revenues.

Protected employers interest when using a credit report to hire qualified and interested individuals. A legislative proposal would have severely diminished an employer’s ability to protect their business from employee theft and other related issue threats found when using a credit report correctly.

Urged Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to assist in the opening of Rancho Springs Hospital by joining forces with the Temecula Valley, Murrieta, and Wildomar Chambers of Commerce by delivering 1,500 letters from concerned business and community members to the Governor’s Riverside Office.

Defeated, for the second straight year, a multi-billion dollar, job-killer mandate that would have unreasonably expanded employer’s costs and liability by mandating a specific paid sick leave policy.

Supported a flexible work week schedule proposal for employers and their employees.

Continued our outreach efforts to local state legislators and the Governor in times of economic and financial crisis by continuing to lobby for an economically sound proposals leading to job growth and business stability.

Protected vital transportation, property tax and redevelopment funds by submitting letters from our membership on the type of impact it would have on local business when the Governor and State Legislature attempted to balance the state budget.

The California State Legislature has finished the first year of a two year legislative session. The Chamber will remain vigilant as it tracks potential laws that may be reintroduced in the second year of the legislative session.

TVCC Protects members from anti-business legislation

The Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce opposed AB 793 and AB 943, two legislative proposals that would have put businesses in Temecula at a competitive disadvantage. The Chamber, through its regional business advocacy coalition the Southwest California Legislative Council (SWCLC), sent letters to area legislators and the Governor urging their opposition to the legislation. The Governor vetoed AB 793 and AB 943 in October.

“These were two very destructive pieces legislation that would have harmed Temecula businesses,” stated Alice Sullivan, President and CEO of the Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce. “The state legislature needs to focus their priorities on job creation and stimulating the local economy through reducing burdensome regulations on business. AB 793 and AB 943 would have taken businesses in the wrong direction in California,” continued Sullivan.

AB 793 would have revised the statute of limitations law for any workplace claim or lawsuit relating to compensation so that the statute of limitations is renewed each time an employee’s compensation is “affected,” including each time it is paid. AB 793 would encompass a broad array of workplace decisions, including hiring, job evaluations, and promotions. The Chamber opposed AB 793 because it unreasonably expands employer liability in workplace lawsuits far beyond the federal Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.

AB 943 would have prohibited employers from using consumer credit reports for employment purposes unless the information is “substantially job related.” It would have severely diminished an employer’s ability to protect their business from the threat of employee theft. Employee theft has been well documented as a growing problem and the United States Chamber of Commerce rates the annual cost to businesses at $40 billion.

Southern California Gas Co. toPs in customer satisfaction, says J.D. PoWer anD associates

City of Temecula leaDing efforts to consiDer exPansion of csusm temecula

Southern California Gas Co. (The Gas Company) has earned the top customer satisfaction ranking among natural gas utilities in the Western United States and has the highest score among all utilities nationwide, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Gas Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction StudySM .

The study is based on a random survey of U.S. residential natural gas utility customers.

“To be recognized by J.D. Power and Associates for customer satisfaction is a tribute to the outstanding commitment of our employees to meet our customers’ needs every day,” said Debra L. Reed, president and chief executive officer of The Gas Company.

In the study, The Gas Company received a customer-satisfaction score of 671, the highest score among all natural gas utilities, and the highest score among the 15 utilities surveyed in the western region.

The J.D. Power and Associates study ranks 75 of the nation’s largest natural gas utilities, and this year interviewed more than 54,000 customers. The scores for each utility are based on six factors: billing and payment; price; corporate citizenship; communications; customer service; and field service.

Southern California Gas Co. has been delivering clean, safe and reliable natural gas to its customers for more than 140 years. It is the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility, providing safe and reliable energy to 20.5 million consumers through 5.7 million meters in more than 500 communities. The company’s service territory encompasses approximately 20,000 square miles in diverse terrain throughout Central and Southern California, from Visalia to the Mexican border. The Gas Company is a regulated subsidiary of Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE). Sempra Energy, based in San Diego, is a Fortune 500 energy services holding company.

History has shown us that a soft or depressed economy triggers a significant increase in interest in higher education opportunities. Today is no different with a heightened demand for needed courses with institutions challenged with mandated reductions in enrollment due to the lack of State funding.

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) at Temecula, established in the Paul Goldring Garrett Institute for Learning in 2008, has successfully been serving over 100 students, largely nursing students.

The Higher Education Subcommittee of Temecula City Council Members’ Mike Naggar and Chuck Washington have been focused on identifying innovative methods to assist CSUSM for both the short and long term needs. “The importance of getting CSUSM deeply rooted in Temecula cannot be overstated, such higher education opportunities for our community and region are priceless,” stated Council Member Naggar.

CSUSM at Temecula in a very short period of time has grown enrollment, added niche programs and continues to see a large demographic attending their main campus.

In this economy, the need for an entrepreneurial effort is necessary to identify a suitable venue, revenue, staffing and leveraging of resources. The Higher Education Subcommittee, consisting of Council Members Washington and Naggar, have worked diligently with both Cal State San Marcos and the Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD) to form a partnership that will consider expanding Cal State San Marcos at Temecula, within vacant space, at the Sparkman Alternative Education Center.

It is envisioned that this property allows CSUSM the opportunity to grow their curriculum in areas such as Nursing, Teacher Credentialing, Human Resource Management Certificate, and Osher Lifelong Learning. The proximity to a future hospital development is also an advantage as the concept is further reviewed.

This concept has necessitated the preparation of a Mitigated Negative Declaration examining the impacts, if any, associated with this proposed project and will be circulated for 30-days. In addition, there is an Open-House scheduled for October 28, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Sparkman Alternative Education Center, multi-purpose room. Officials from the Temecula Unified School District, as well as, Cal State San Marcos and the City of Temecula will be available to discuss this concept and provide further information.

This concept project will be further reviewed by both TVUSD Board of Trustees and the City of Temecula City Council in November.

We are excited about the opportunity the Sparkman Alternative Education Center facility provides. The partnership between the Temecula Unified School District, the City of Temecula, Cal State San Marcos and the southwest Riverside County business community will advance the public higher education needs of this region. Because of the fiscal crisis in California, we knew that a Cal State San Marcos at Temecula campus would have to sustain itself without the use of state funds. Through creativity, entrepreneurialism and strong collaboration, the partners have found a way to make this happen. The Sparkman facility will provide space to serve more students and allow for expansion of innovative degree programs, career development and lifelong learning opportunities that are relevant to preparing southwest Riverside County residents for the future.

Today, Temecula IS a university town thanks to the leadership and vision of the community and local business and city leaders. The people of Temecula can take great pride in belonging to a community that is a pioneer of 21st-century education. We are ready to work side by side with our partners to raise the level of educational attainment in the region, preparing a workforce in teaching, nursing, biotech, and other needed areas.

consumers Win as iDearc meDia’s exclusive suPerguarantee Wages War on the recession

Consumers across the country will be stimulating the economy while saving valuable time and effort, according to Idearc Media LLC. Idearc Media not only guarantees it; they “SuperGuarantee” it.

Idearc Media’s SuperGuaranteeSM program is a national consumer guarantee initiative designed to increase spending in local economies by dramatically lowering the risk associated with hiring contractors, plumbers, auto body repair shops and thousands of other eligible service provider category based businesses.

Whether it is dry cleaners in Seattle, dog grooming in Austin or wedding consultants in Philadelphia, consumers can trust the service they are paying for will get done right, or Idearc Media will make it right. Idearc Media will work with the consumer and the client and try to resolve any issues that may arise from a service or reimburse the consumer up to $500 of labor services.

SuperGuaranteeSM companies, indicated by the SuperGuaranteeSM shield, are found exclusively in Superpages.com®, new editions of the Verizon® Yellow Pages directories and SuperpagesDirect™ direct mail products. Consumers register the service in advance through Superpages.com. Businesses receiving multiple complaints may be removed from the program.

idearC’S War on the reCeSSion provideS ‘Super’ BenefitS for ConSuMerS and ClientS

The SuperGuaranteeSM program is free for consumers and eligible businesses. Clients may qualify for the SuperGuaranteeSM program based on heading, category, and ad program. All eligible clients were placed into the program at first launch on Feb. 17. It is a first of its kind consumer guarantee for the Yellow Pages and Internet Yellow Pages industries.

As consumers use the SuperGuaranteeSM program they will be asked to submit user ratings and reviews on Superpages.com® about the service they received. This will generate more content on Superpages.com®, providing even more relevant information for consumers as they decide where to spend their money, and delivering more traffic to Idearc Media clients.

“The initial response from consumers and clients is nothing short of super,” said Klein. “I’ve heard countless stories of our clients saying the SuperGuaranteeSM program will bring more business to them and many are already using it as a way to generate more business for themselves – it provides them an instant competitive advantage.”

For more information visit SuperGuarantee.com.
