Respice Finem “Look Toward the Goal”
Principal’s Perspective
While Mr Pat Nethery is on Long Service Leave, I am fortunate to be the Relieving
Principal. I want to thank Mr Simon Gaynor for his ability to step up into the Deputy
Principal role and for Mr Liam Hackett who has stepped up into the Head Teacher TAS
role. Their commitment to public education and our school is exemplary and they
continue to do a fantastic job.
This year, I have enjoyed seeing our teaching staff work so hard from School
Development Day onwards.
Congratulations to all students and their families who we recognise at the annual
Presentation awards ceremony in Week 11. We look forward to seeing many students
and family and friends at this important event.
Beautification Day
Wednesday 16th December is the last day of school for students. The day has been
developed over the past few years to be a Beautification day, with many projects
identified by students to make the school a more beautiful place. This has included
gardening, updating posters and resources in rooms, renovating areas and painting.
Similar projects will occur again this year. Students will be offered to be involved in
projects of their choosing.
After lunch, students will proceed to the pool with swimming for sport.
2016 Start of the Year
THS staff will return to school on Wednesday, 27th January.
Students in Years 7, 11 & 12 will return on Thursday, 28th January.
Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will return on Friday, 29th January to join the rest of the
school.
On Saturday, 30th January THS teaching staff will join with teaching staff from other
local government schools for a professional learning day with Ian Luscombe, ex-
Principal of the Redbank School and expert on behaviour management. This learning
opportunity will continue to help teaching staff with the many challenges of working
with students in assisting to keep them safe and learning.

SCHOOL NEWS
Annual Presentation Day Temora High School Presentation Day will be held on Tuesday, 15th December starting
at 9.30pm sharp in the MPU. All parents and community members are invited to
attend. All students must attend wearing full school uniform.
Student Requirements 2016 Included with this Newsletter is a detailed list of student stationery requirements for
2016. Please ensure your child starts 2016 prepared with the requirements for the
school year.
Attention: Parents of Year 11 students Does your son/daughter require extra help in the classroom for assessments? If so,
s/he may qualify for a reader or writer for the BOSTES HSC examinations. The process
is to enable students with a learning difficulty to be able to show what they know in an
examination situation. If you would like more details, consult the website
http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/disability-provisions/and then have a chat to
Jenni Lewis before the end of the year.
Year 12 Graduation Dinner
The 2015 Graduation Dinner was held on Thursday, 5th November at the Temora Golf
Club. It was attended by 45 of our 51 graduating students and their families, together
with a number of staff members to wish the students well in their future escapades.
Many students took advantage of the professional photography before the class
gathered for their official photo. The formal proceedings, capably chaired by Year 12
Year Adviser – Mr Graham Angel began with a welcome to the guests, followed by the
last official calling of the roll by former year advisor, Mrs Nicole Crawford. Each
student, beautifully attired, was greeted by Principal, Mr Patrick Nethery and Deputy
Principal Mr Scott Frazier, who presented the students with the customary Temora

High School Key Ring as a memento of their time spent at the school.
Grace was delivered by Nikola Henman prior to the meal (catered by Mrs Helen Moses
and her team of workers). The evening continued with Mr Angel delivering the Year
Adviser speech, accompanied by a pictorial projection which ran throughout the night.
SRC members, Bethanie Durham and Jack Murphy responded on behalf of their fellow
students, and together with the other members of the SRC; Lauren Inch, Hugh McLaren
and Cecilia Drumore, cut the farewell cake. Last but not least to take to the rostrum
was Mr Nethery, who gave an amusing anecdotal delivery about each of the Graduates.
Once the official proceedings had concluded all who attended enjoyed the rest of the
social evening, with many laughs and sharing of memories.
I would especially like to thank the four Year 8 students, Ellise, Emily, Lauren and Peta,
as well a great representation from the Year 12 students who helped to set up for the
dinner. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Mentoring Program 11 Year 9 boys have been developing their mentoring skills, working with selected
students from Years 4 & 5 from TPS in the third year of our mentoring group. These
boys have been fantastic in their patience, communication, problem solving and
encouragement of the younger students. So far, the group has played initiative games,
worked on “minute-to win-it” games, solved brain-bender puzzles as well as toured the
High school. This program will continue next year with the same group, with all boys
benefiting. We start with Drumbeat at the Temora Community Centre with Anne
Macauley, then working on their project building skills at THS.
Mentors: Adam Prentice, Blake Hargrave, Ben Cooper, Tom Lawrence, Tom McGrath,
Jeff Mannell, Tyler Madden, Nic Moulas, Bryce Wiencke, Adam Ferguson, Bailey Walker.
I look forward to working with these boys to create another strong mentoring group.

Year 7 2015 Orientation
Ms Crawford ran an excellent Year 7 2016 Orientation program, with 5 secondary
sampling lessons and a Sports Gala Day part of the program. The program concluded
on Wednesday 25th November, with many excited young students and their parents in
attendance, with some parents recalling their high school days.
Thanks to our guest speakers for giving the group their time and knowledge to allow a
successful transition to high school next year. Thank you Patrick Nethery, Tracy Harper
(Year Advisor stepping in for Nicole Crawford), Helen Tyack (SASS), Jenni Lewis
(Learning Assistance), Greg Newham (President P&C) and all the staff during our tours
to speak with parents and students. Also thanks to the SRC for the BBQ and tours for
the students.
If any parent was unable to make the tour on the day, please contact the school for an
alternative time.
Year 11 Orientation For new students to THS in Year 11 2016, we held another successful transition
afternoon for them on Wednesday, 11th November. Nearly 20 people toured the school
with us and then partook in afternoon tea. Head Teachers spoke with small groups of
students, beginning the mentoring program that we manage for all senior students.
Thank you to all staff who spoke with the new students and families, as well as to the
canteen for catering and the Year 10 & 11 students for their tour guide and catering
skills!
STARS Our end of year STARS excursion is set for Friday, 11th December with students
selecting either to stay in Temora for the pool and movies or to go to Wagga for
movies, jump and putt or laser tag.
Congratulations to all students able to attend this excursion.
Unfortunately not all students are eligible to attend. Our criteria excludes students who
in the second semester have not kept up their behaviour, attendance, uniform or
completion of work. Staff will be rostered on at school for these students to still attend
school and meaningful learning activities will still occur for students.

Issuing of School Reports - Procedures Students usually receive their reports at 3:15 on a given day
Reports are to be issued earlier if:
On the day of issuing a parent comes to school requesting the report
On the day of issuing, a student comes to school with a note from parents
requesting the report if they are leaving school before 3:15. The student will receive
the report
The decision to issue a report to a parent or students earlier than this day is the sole
responsibility of the Senior Executive.
Mobile Telephones Update Temora HS is informing parents of important information regarding mobile phones
and sexting. Although we experience very small number of incidents of this issue, we
want to keep parents and students aware of this development.
As of the 2nd of December 2015 the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command will be
adopting a policy where phones used in relation to sexting offences will be destroyed.
This is the only guarantee that photographs are permanently destroyed and cannot be
retrieved from the devices.
There is a 24 hour 'Parent Line' for seeking advice on sexting from highly trained and
experienced counsellors - 1300 130 052
Parents can also obtain further advice in relation to sexting on the following websites:

Year 8 Sydney Excursion All the students gathered at the crack of dawn (well before it actually), packed the bus
and were ready for the trip to the big smoke, Wreck it Ralph was the pick of the movies
and 2 DJs helped to keep everyone
entertained on the double decker
monstrosity of a coach. The first stop
was Taronga Zoo where we saw the
Seal show and the bird show and
Henry even got be in the bird show
(Check out facebook for the video).
After the zoo we caught the ferry out
to Manly for a play in the sand and
some dinner on the boulevard then
onwards to the Quarantine Station for
a ghost tour. Just enough to spook a
few before putting them all to bed.
TERM 4 - WEEK 9
Page 7
Day 2 of the trip saw all the students prepare their own breakfast and lunch for the day
and catch the light rail into Darling Harbour where we visited the fish at the Aquarium,
learnt the history of Fort Denison on a great tour that included the one o'clock cannon
and checked out all the famous people at Madame Tussauds (I think this was the
students favourite stop). As it was a particularly hot day we skipped the powerhouse
museum (and the 20min walk each way) and had a very relaxing paddlepop in Hyde
park before heading into the city for dinner and onwards and upwards to the Sydney
Eye Tower (Centrepoint). After many attempts at getting the lifts to work ...apparently
you have to press the button, we caught the light rail home and everyone went to
sleep, for the record the girls won the getting to sleep competition.
Day three had the students make their breakfast and lunch again with a few opting out
of the tomato and beetroot options. The students all worked really well together to get
the bus packed and be ready to head out for the day. The coach dropped us off at the
bottom of the Harbour Bridge and we walked up to the very top of the South Pylon,
learning some very interesting history of the bridge along the way. We then crossed
the bridge and headed into Luna Park.
The DJs cranked it up a notch on the drive home and had the whole bus grooving and
singing along.
Big Thanks must go to the teachers that attended the Excursion, it can not happen
without you!! So big shout out to Mr Hackett, Mrs Wallace, Mrs La Trobe, Mr Angel and
Ms Thomson your expertise and awesome generosity with your time made this a great
trip for all the students.

School Spectacular
A group of 23 students travelled to
Sydney Friday, 27th November to watch
the 2015 Schools Spectacular. An amazing
array of music, dance and drama items
were performed by some of NSW most
talented students. Highlights included
spotting Carly Turner (choir member) on
the big screen and country music stars.
The McClymonts and singer Joe Moore
from The Voice. A big thank you to Mrs
Gil Bett for driving the bus and to all the
students for being such wonderful
ambassadors for Temora High. After 32
years this is the last Spectacular at the
Entertainment Centre so we wait to see
where the new home for this wonderful
event will be.
Emma Cox's Major Study intro
"Skyhigh" was choreographed by HSC
dance student Emma Cox as her HSC
Major Study Composition work. Inspired
by the experience of skydiving. The piece
will be performed by Hannah Howard-
Gilchrist and Emma, with one symbolising
the instructor and the other the student
the jumper. The work is in 4 sections: the
preparation; the climb; freefall and the
parachute flight to landing. We hope you
enjoy the performance.
Mrs Sheree Elwin – Dance/PDHPE Teacher
On Thursday 27th November Year 9
students attended the University of
Canberra’s “Aspire program”. Students
travelled to Canberra and were welcomed
by the Aspire Ambassadors. Year 9
students were given a tour of facilities and
accommodation. Students completed a
treasure hunt (one team was awarded a
record high score for the whole year) and
interacted in the careers expo. The
students were broken into two groups
and attended a workshop. The two
workshops were in the areas of nursing
and journalism. These workshops were
hands on and highly entertaining. 2015
Aspire was a highly successful event
sponsored by the University of Canberra.
Rotary Mock Interviews
Rotary Mock Interviews were held on the
30th November for interested Year 10
students. It was great to see the diverse
range of business people supporting this
event organised by Rotary. Students had
nominated an interest in the following
career areas - Electrician, Veterinarian,
Lawyer, Civil Engineering, Auto Electrician,
Museum curator, Architect, Primary
School Teacher, Hairdressing/Beauty,
Photographer and Language Teacher.
Students dressed for success and

completed a half an hour interview with a
business person in a career area they had
specified. The students found the process
a bit nerve racking but would all agree
after their interview that it was really
worthwhile. I would like to thank Rotary
for their ongoing support of this initiative
and Mr Brendon Fritsch for his
organisation.

Retiring Teachers
Next year will see some changes in the
Mathematics staff at Temora High School,
with the retirement of 2 long serving staff
members. Barry Flakelar has been a
teacher in Temora since 1980 – 25 years at
St Annes and then at Temora High for the
last 9 years.
Also retiring is Neville Byrne who has
been teaching at Temora High School for
the same amount of time.
Both are looking very stressed about this
prospect but hopefully they can occupy
some of their spare time on improving
their golf game and seeing a bit more of
the country.
Enjoy the break and see you next year.
Mr Roger Bradtke - Head Teacher
Year 8 and 9 PE classes have commenced
going to the pool for lessons, and classes
are reminded that they need to bring
swimmers, towel and money or a season
ticket. Year 10 PDHPE classes are participating in
a number of recreational activities,
including swimming, for the remainder of
the year.
TERM 4 - WEEK 9 3 December 2015

Students are also reminded that lifesaving
will be the first topic for 2016, so
swimming gear will be needed for PE
classes from day 1 2016.

Lachlan Reichstein - Temora
High Victor Chang Award
recipient
The Institute was represented at the
awards ceremony by Dr Romaric Bouveret
who delivered the occasional address and
presented awards. Lachlan Reichstein was
a Victor Chang Award recipient.
Thirty-four promising young scientists
from across the Riverina were on
Wednesday 11 November recognised at
the 2015 Victor Chang Awards hosted by
Junee High School. Both Moira Burns and
Mr Nethery were lucky to be invited to
attend as were Lachlan’s parents.
The Victor Chang Awards were
established to continue Dr Chang’s legacy
and to promote and inspire students to
pursue a career in science or health and
medical research. It is the first time that
the awards will be presented in the
Riverina.
Recipients recognised at the award
presentation were from nearly all High
and Central schools in the Riverina.
Lachlan represented THS with distinction
and now gets the chance to visit the
Victor Chang research Labs in Sydney on
November 30.
Congratulations and well done Lachlan.
Scientific Models In Science
One important use for scientific models is
to explain complex scientific concepts.
There is little doubt that the human
placenta is certainly complex. 8.3 Science
showed great ingenuity in construction
models from a diagram. This model was
then used to explain the problems
associated when dangerous substances
such as alcohol and drugs across the
placenta.

Goldfish Capillaries
Mr Irvine is doubtless a man of infinite
patience. Recently he placed a live gold
fish under a microscope to view blood
flowing in its capillaries. The microscope
image was projected to the students.
Unlikely as it may seem and despite the
presence of two year 8 classes for the
“viewing” the goldfish was not harmed
and students were able to see the blood
flowing through the capillaries.
Mobile Phones and Microscopy
Mobile phones can be a scourge or a
blessing. A spectacularly good use for a
mobile phone is for enhancing the image
from a monocular microscope. Year 7
were recently viewing plant cells and
students with a steady hand and rapid
shot capacity on their mobile phones
were able to capture the image.
Year 10 were studying cell division and a
number of students were very successful
in capturing images of chromosomes at
different stages of cell division.
Agriculture Report
The agriculture students are once again
looking at the effect of melatonin to
artificially alter the breeding cycle of
sheep. The ewes receive a melatonin
implant under the supervision of Mr
Williams. This has the effect of bringing
the sheep into oestrus at a time of the
year that better synchronises with the
school calendar. Because of the
compression of oestrus it can have the
additional benefit of increased twinning.

Tumut High School Visit - F1 in
Schools Inspection
Temora High students travelled to Tumut
High to inspect their amazing CNC Lathe
that is used in the production of student’s
F1 Cars. The F1 in Schools program can be
checked out at www.rea.org.au.
With complicated rules to be met in the
designs it is a challenging programme
that sees students learn the Autodesk
Inventor software and produce amazing
3D cars. Tumut is the only local school
with the facilities to produce the cars from
the balsa wood blanks. The lathe is a very
expensive piece of equipment and can
turn the ideas of their 3D designs into
reality.
The Tumut High School TAS department
were great and showed us through the
equipment required for the competition
and the methods used to produce a
physical model from the student’s
designs. Actually seeing the lathe in action
allowed for an appreciation of the way in
which the cars need to be shaped and the
tricks to getting a legal and workable
design.
The lathe was set up and the students
were able to see the cutting of the blank.
In twenty minutes 90g of balsa was turned
into a 55g car. Everybody was very
impressed and Temora High will be
getting more involved in this exciting area
of technology.

Representative sport has continued into
late Term 4, with the boys and girls cricket
teams still being active in their respective
knockouts.
The Open Girls’ team was defeated by
Wagga Wagga High School in the Riverina
Semi-Final in an exciting game played at
The Oval, while the Open Boys team
defeated Wagga Wagga High School in
the Semi-Final of the Alan Davidson
Shield in late November, and will travel to
Albury to play Murray High School in the
Final on the 2nd of December, in an
attempt to become Riverina champions
for the first time in over 10 years.
The Year 9 boys and girls abseiling trips
were conducted in late November, and
were highly successful days for all
involved. More can be found on these
trips elsewhere in the newsletter.
Congratulations go to Jack Harper, Max
Harper and Blake Harper, who were all
chosen to play in the Riverina Open boys’
cricket team early next year. The three
Harper boys have been playing high
quality cricket leading up to the trials, and
all deserve their place in the team. This is
the first time in memory that the High
School has had three players in this team
at the same time, and certainly the first
time that there have been three players
carrying the same surname.
Several members of the THS staff have
been elected to positions in Riverina sport
for 2016. Vicki Breust has been selected as
tennis convenor and manager for the
fourth year, while Ian Groth was elected
unopposed to the position of lawn bowls
convenor for the 10th year. Tony Stringer
was elected Riverina athletics
convenor/manager, swimming manager,
as well as being a member of the Riverina
Schools Sports Association executive for
2016.
The school swimming carnival for 2016
will be held on the Wednesday of week 2,
February the 3rd.

High
1st XI Cricket - Davidson Shield
24/11/2015
Temora visited Wagga to play on a turf
wicket for some hopefully valuable
experience. It turned out to be a very
different surface than the team has been
used to. In the last outing vs
Murrumburrah the bat dominated and a
score of over 300 off 40 overs was
amazing.
The opening pair of Captain Jack Harper
and Ben Grant set a solid platform. This
was despite a green soft wicket making
batting very difficult.
SPORTS NEWS
TERM 4 - WEEK 9 3 December 2015
TERM 3 - WEEK 2 3 December 2015
Page 16
Some powerful shots from both openers
saw a 52 run partnership before Jack was
bowled for 33. Blake Harper came next
and could only add a couple before being
stumped. Bailey Robinson was out caught
for naught and to his credit walked off to
what could have been called a bump ball.
This was a collapse in the middle order
that Wagga High were hoping for and
Temora High lost 5-9 before Clancy
MacKay and Matt Gillard steadied the
innings. Their 45 run partnership was
fraught with danger from a vicious wicket
and consistent targeted bowling. The pair
did well and gave Temora High a total
that could be defended. Clancy finally fell
for 18 in an uncharacteristically slow
innings. Max Tidd was run out for one
shortly after. Matt was joined by the late
inclusion Josh Philp. Despite little cricket
Josh smashed a quick 15 supported by
Dave Murphy and notably Jacob Bell.
Jacob had dislocated his little finger badly
the night before and was selfless in his
decision to bat. Lasting 35 overs on this
green wicket was a strong performance
from this promising team and Wagga had
their work cut out for them.
Wagga opened on a drying track and had
the better of the conditions. Captain Jack
had other ideas and hatched a plan to
make the most of the surface. With Max
Harper bowling express from one end,
Jack bowled off spin at the other. The
variability in pace and bounce from Jack,
and controlled aggression from Max saw
Wagga struggle from the start. Wickets
fell constantly and by the time of the first
bowling change they were 5-13. Jack
bowled 6 overs 2-4 and Max 3-11. Max
Tidd came on and matched this with 3-11
in a solid display. Josh Philp chimed in
with two late wickets to wrap it up. Wagga
were dismissed for 65 in the 20th over.
They were gracious in defeat and the
game was played in great spirit.
It was an excellent performance with
character and heart from a Temora side
that was playing its first game on grass.
The next game will be against Murray
High in Albury and is the Davidson Shield
Riverina Final. The winner from the region
progresses to Sydney for the
championship wrap up early next year.
