From Rabbi Holtz’s Study

One of my favorite moments during a bar or bat mitzvah ceremony here is the passing of the Torah. Before we take the

Torah from the ark, I explain to the congregation that becoming bar/bat mitzvah means taking one’s place in the Jewish tradition which stretches back 3200 years to Moses receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Moses taught the laws to the Israelites, who in turn passed them on to their children, who passed them to their children…For more than 160 generations our people has studied, lived, and taught the Torah, and then passed it on as precious inheritance from one generation to the next in an unbroken chain, and the bar/bat mitzvah is the latest link. By literally passing the Torah scroll from grandparents to parents to the bar/bat mitzvah, we symbolize this very real chain of tradition, kept lovingly alive, from Mt. Sinai until today.

Each week when we pass the Torah, I see people in the congregation crying. Often the parents and grandparents are tearing up. Why? They understand the power and importance of this moment. They know how amazing, how incredible, how unlikely it sometimes seemed that this chain could remain unbroken for more than 3 millennia. And their hearts are overflowing with joy that their child is still another link in a chain stretching back in time, and, we pray far, far into the future. This is why people cry.

Yet each week, as I watch the tears in the eyes of the adults, I also wonder if the bar or bat mitzvah child really gets it. Do they have any real sense of the weight of this moment? Perhaps a little bit. But mostly, they are simply too young to under-stand. And it is for this very reason that the Reform movement introduced the ceremony of Confirmation nearly 175 years ago.

Liberal Judaism still holds that, despite the bar/bat mitzvah ceremony, thirteen year-olds are really too young to make a full adult commitment to Judaism. They are just at the beginning of their journey into adulthood. Therefore, as at many congregations, here at TBA we continue to urge that Confirmation be the mini-mum goal of every child in our religious school. The children who continue their studies beyond bar/bat mitzvah through to Confirmation constitute a special group. They have studied on a deeper level, and have explored their relationship to God and Torah and the Jewish Community. And this year, on Saturday night, May 23, they will stand before you and confirm their acceptance of Judaism. Your presence is crucial. This is not a private ceremony. On the contrary, in the same way that the Israelites witnessed the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, so too you are needed to serve as witnesses to this Confirmation of the Covenant between God and our people. Our Confirmands make their pledge not only to God, but to each one of us as members of this congregation and of the larger Jewish community. The ceremo-ny is incomplete without your participation. And who knows – perhaps as you watch these youngsters confirm their place in the chain of tradition, you too will have tears in your eyes.

Peace and blessings, Rabbi David K. Holtz

Notes from Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

Shalom!

Once again our congregation is being asked to support one of our own. A year ago you all came to the aid of Sharon Abner when she suffered a stroke and together we raised $20,000 to help her with living and medical expenses as she recovered. Today she continues to work hard to recover, she is walking with a walker, is driving, and hoping that a surgical procedure in April will restore her thumb so that she can continue to work on returning to the music she loves so much.

Today we are reaching out again to ask for your support for another one of our beloved employees:

Dear all,

Allen Gewirtz, better known as Mr. G, has been an integral part of our community since 2003 serving as our ba’al tefilah for the Conservative minyan on Shabbat mornings. Because of his presence Rabbi Holtz and Cantor Goldberg know that the Conservative minyan is in good hands when they leave to lead a bar/bat mitzvah in the Reform tradition.

Mr. G. finds himself in a difficult situation and has asked for our help. This winter he found himself in need of a hip revision. When he under-went surgery they found an infection and he has been without a hip and in rehab ever since. While he is in rehab recovering from this infection and awaiting a hip revision his family and friends are pitching in to pay his living expenses. Mr. G. is an incredible man and has given of himself to support the TBA community throughout the years. We are hoping that you will find it in your heart to support him at this difficult time by sending a financial gift to his friends to support their efforts.

Thank you for your generosity.

Unfortunately creating an online system such as we did in Sharon Abner’s case where you can make a gift to Mr. G. is not possible. Please call the office and anyone on our staff will be happy to share the information needed so that you can support Mr. G. during this difficult time. Please do not send a check to TBA as this is not a donation but a gift directly to his friends and family.

Thank you so much for your support and generosity.

L’shalom,

Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

“Adopt a Family” La Asociacion

What is Adopt A Family? Each month “La Asociacion” selects a family that is going through a particularly difficult time. Two TBA families volunteer to

purchase a suggested list of supplies. The supplies are delivered to Jennefer Schifman’s home which is near TBA.

She delivers the supplies to the family in need. Cost? The cost seems to average

around $50.00 per family.

We would love to have some new families join us in the “Adopt a

Family” program.

Saturdays at 9:00am during Conservative Services. Mah Jongg: Mondays at 1:00pm Beginners gather at TBA to play Mah Jongg on Mondays. Guests: $5.00 to offset cost of refreshments; free to TBA members.

Book Club: Friday, May 15 at 10:00am Ten Green Bottles: Vienna to Shanghai—Journey of Fear and Hope by Vivian Jeanette Kaplan From Publishers Weekly: For a brief period between 1938 and 1941, roughly 20,000 Jews found refuge from the Nazis in the one place not requiring visas, police certificates, or proofs of financial inde-pendence: Shanghai. In this spellbinding memoir, Kaplan recounts her family’s transition from the “delight” of Vienna to “a mysterious blob on the map, China.” Writing in a fictional present tense, Kaplan nar-rates this evocative, moving saga in the voice of her mother, Nini. The halcyon early years of cafes and skiing end as the Nazis rise to power. … With the war’s end comes the shock of learning what became of family and friends left behind in Europe. Although Vienna is rebuilt and a daughter (the author) is born, Communist troops arrive, and Nini and Poldi move again, this time to Canada. Kaplan’s intimate knowledge of her parents’ story makes it seem as if she experienced it herself, and her remarkable achievement will make readers feel that way, too.

The Fran Friedman Fund for the Enrichment of Children will present a free puppet show for children ages 0-7 and their families performed by Ora Fruchter, a Brooklyn-based puppeteer, performer, director and educator, at 11:15am on May 17 at Temple Beth Abraham.

The performance is a 45-minute interac-tive sing-along with guitar and puppets, with original songs, oldies and tradi-tional kids’ music.

Ora writes and performs regularly with her companies Yellow Sneaker Puppets and Doppelskope, using puppetry and music to create innovative and engag-ing experiences. Ora’s work in Jewish communities is built on the idea that self-expression and collaboration are a crucial part of the Jewish study experi-ence. Using unique methods of story-telling, puppets, everyday objects, and lots of imagination, people of any age can engage in meaningful and creative study, says Ora.

Ora has been performing since 2008 at a weekly sing-along in Brooklyn and at other venues including the Brooklyn Public Library, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Center for Jewish History.

The Fran Friedman Fund for the Enrich-ment of Children was established by family and friends last year after Fran lost her year-long battle with cancer. Fran was a member of Temple Beth Abraham for 35 years and was a teacher for more than 25 years, spend-ing 18 years as a substitute teacher in the Irvington school district. See page 13 for our ad.
