While most of us see the Holocaust as being full of acts of physical violence, which it was, I think we lose sight that it began with people being blamed for the Great Depression, being excluded from mainstream life, being forbidden from living the lives they wanted, in other words, persecuted, separated, isolated, and finally, of course, exterminated, all in the name of patriotism. Have you ever had a day where people just are down right mean to you and others around them? These people seem to act superior. Why do they act this way? Does it make them feel important? Are they that insecure? All this causes angst, anger and resentment. I know, we need to rise above the circumstances. If you make an issue about the person or people who are vicious, you are deemed as the weak one. But, why is that? Why is the victim, the one who stands up to another seen as a lesser individual? Sometimes, the people who are being inconsiderate don’t even know that they are being that way. Other times they are simply bullying. Remember to act and not to react.

We cannot be on top of our game every day, but we can try. It is important to respect others. It does not matter what level of education you have, what race we are, what religion we are, what gender we are, or what our age is. We all belong to one race, the Human Race. We all make mistakes. By the same token, we need to listen to others and learn from their mistakes, as well as our own. We also need to follow through on what we say we were going to do. If there is a timeline, abide by it. If you truly want to know yourself, remember you are who you really are when no one is looking. Self-checks for integrity and compassion will keep you on the right track.

Time and money are always on our minds. The Temple is no different. The Board recently approved to raise dues by $10 a month. There were people who believe that the Temple should not raise dues. As was said in the past, we do not turn people away due to monetary concerns. If you can, please give more to the Temple. Whatever you can give, that would help out immensely. We cannot just look at the present. We have to consider the future. What are we going to have as a Temple to give to our children? We are still engaged in negotiations with BTEE. Just remember, that is not the only alternative.

I believe that members should pay into a building fund. I know the Temple prides itself on not having to assess members such a fee. On top of that, we have one of the lowest dues structure for a Temple in the Valley. I do not know if that is a good thing. Expenses have far outpaced our income. It is time to change our philosophy.

Be kind to each other.

their proceeds into positive ways to help AIDS victims, drug addicts, the disabled, abused women, abandoned children, as well as many others. The other Thrift Shop has its parking limited to 5 spots, while its neighbor has posted a sign that states, “(Its) Customer’s parking ONLY, All Others Will Be Towed. (I used “its” because I did not want to write the company’s name). I have never seen either parking lot full, but that didn’t stand in the way of the Laundromat to hire a guard to protect its turf. Even after a petition was signed by hundreds, the City of Los Angeles still would not over turn the Laundromat/Pet Store’s restrictions.

The organizations are doing Tzedakah at the highest level, they are providing monies for people to learn and earn a way out of their problems. Those that place restrictions on the donators and the customers of Thrift Shops are interfering with the highest of Mitzvoth. We often talk about PeKuah Nefesh as saving a life and view it in a medical way, the saving of a physical life. The newer theology pertaining to Pekuah Nefesh is that it refers also to quality of life. People who saw themselves as worthless, but now are given counseling, support, and a series of successes have saved his/her life. These people and their organizations need our support, not just monetarily, but in their struggle with those who would persecute them, segregate them, isolate them and render them invisible. In the song, Zog Nit Kein Mol (Never Say That This is the End), there is a phrase that is repeated, “Our Boots THUNDER that we are here”. We must make sure that the thunder of our boots is not too late, we need to begin thundering now. Start now with those who would put their capitalism above the needy, those who would give prudential treatment to business clients rather than to the Mitzvah doers of Pikuah Nefesh, to those in government who would ally themselves with the profiteers over the sincere care givers and most importantly show the evil doers that Good (men) People still save lives. Lest we feel this does not pertain to us, let us remember two quotes, ”No man is an island, no man stands alone.” and:

“First they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out,

Because I was not a Socialist,

Then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out,

Because I was not a Trade Unionist,

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out,

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me- and there was no one left to speak for me.”

You now know when Evil prevails. Do you know when Evil fails? When people love with all their heart. I hope to see you on the 23rd of April at our house, the Temple with a Heart.

APRIL SISTERHOOD SIDELINES

Exciting things are happening in Sisterhood! Our very talented member Leona Zollman led us in her Women’s Seder on March 23rd. The Haggadah we used was written by Leona and emphasizes women’s roles in the Passover events. It is always a joyful event and we encourage all women to plan to attend in future years. THANK YOU LEONA!

Sisterhood members plan to attend and participate in our Temple’s Community Seder on March 30th. We hope to see many Temple members there this year.

Many of us will participate in Family Promise week in April. We provide a dinner for the homeless families stay-ing at St. Jude’s and who are seeking work. We would be happy to have you join us in this worthwhile endeavor. Please come to our April meeting and join us as we make our plans.

We should all try to attend the Days of Remembrance held in our Temple on April 23rd. The commemoration is sponsored by the Burbank Human Relations Council. The speaker will be David Myerhof. He will talk about his par-ents' escape from Nazi Germany, which will surely be very touching. He will also read short excerpts from his recent-ly published book of poetry 'Look Beyond'. Meyerhof will sign books for those who want to buy a copy.

It’s Finally Here!! Sisterhood's Jewish Film Festival. Join us on Saturday, April 27 at 7:30PM for wine and cheese followed by a movie and discussion. No admission fee, but donations will be appreciated. Child care will be provided at a nominal fee. This will be the first in a series of Jewish-themed films that will be of interest to all of us. A great way to get together and share our opinions while expanding our horizons!. You won’t want to miss these. As we were concluding the March meeting, a discussion occurred about Jewish values and how to keep them alive through women’s and daughters’ activities. What I’m trying to say here is that we have bright and interesting members and we invite all the women and interested men of Temple Beth Emet to join us.

Looking forward, there’s going to be an ice cream social in July and honey pots for Rosh Hashanah. With so many sweet things ahead, won’t you join us?

Our next meeting is Sunday April 7th at 10am in Blum Hall. Refreshments will be served. See you there.

Shalom, Ruth Glick, VP

Leona Zollman would like to thank all the ladies, young and old, who came to our Women's Seder as; well as those who helped set up, clean up and brought food and paper goods. A special thank you to Jerry Engelberg who came at 10AM to open and set up Blum Hall in addition to providing us with food. What he did was unbelievable, he went above and beyond the call of duty.
