T E M P L E S H O LO M W I S H L I S T If you are looking for a philanthropy opportunity for your family, we have started a "Temple Sholom Wish List", where we have listed items that our Temple family is in need of. Donations do not have to be in the full amount listed, any contribution will be much appreciated. To make a donation, please contact the Temple Sholom office at 604.266.7190.

Dear Temple Family,

To begin, let me wish all of you a happy 2020 and a new decade filled with hope, progress and comfort within our Temple Sholom com-munity and beyond.

Our mission sets out to honour and sanctify each and every person, and I am so proud and privileged to work with such able and dedicat-ed lay-leadership, staff and clergy that adhere to this mission on a

daily basis. It truly inspires me.

Despite our talented bench strength, however, we could not possibly deliver on this lofty aspiration without our volunteers. In fact, there are too many to count who contribute their time and/or resources to our synagogue, for which we are profoundly grateful. Each contribution collectively makes us what we are and supports what we aspire to achieve.

However, there are three volunteer groups, in particular, whose place in the synagogue is so significant and ongoing that they have a seat at our Temple Sholom Board meeting (as affiliates) every month. They are:

• Sixty Plus Group (led by Bill Gruenthal and Dinah Lewis)

• Sisterhood (led by Mary Kleiner and Annette Kozicki)

• Men’s Club (led by Larry Bloom and David Schwartz)

Our affiliate groups recommit year after year, requiring considerable effort, organization, logistics and leadership. Behind each of these leaders are many other dedicated volunteers, also giving of their time to ensure that dozens of programs run smoothly year-round, available for those who value the meaning and companionship they provide.

Some key offerings include: the Sixty Plus Group’s speaker series, social lunches and Chanukah Party; the Sisterhood’s choir, Shabbaton Weekend, monthly meetups, and Fall Fest Fun-raiser; or the Men’s club mixer, latke school fundraiser, informa-tive presentations and Poker and Pastrami nights.

Our affiliates are the reason so many of us come together and come to discover Temple Sholom – and each other.

It is with profound thanks to all our volunteers, including those beyond the affiliates mentioned herein, that I write these words. You are all at the heart and soul of what makes our community live, breathe and thrive. May your contributions continue to inspire and may you always go from strength to strength.

All my best,

Jeff Balin Temple Sholom President

P.S.: Please note that our Board Shabbat will take place on the morning of February 22nd. Come join us in honoring our dedicated Temple Sholom Board Members who offer their time, talent and leader-ship to ensure that Temple Sholom remains a great place to belong, honouring each and every person, in so many ways. I hope to see you there!

Tu B'Shvat Program On Sunday, February 9 we will be offering two exciting ways to celebrate Tu B'Shvat. School will be open for chugim and classes as usual, but for families wanting an outdoor experience together, we will

be joining with the Jericho Stewardship Group to help with the removal of existing non-native shrub and tree species as well as possibly planting new native trees and shrubs.

If you are planning to attend the park clean-up, please register at: templesholombc.shulcloud.com/form/february-9.html

Park clean-up info: February 9, 9:30am-12:30pm at Jericho Park (meet at the bridge between the two ponds). Tools and a light snack will be provided. Please dress appropriately for the weather as we will work rain or shine. (jerichostewardship.ca).

Chugim (electives) Our students in Grades 4-7 are wrapping up Tu B’Shvat learning in Cooking and MakeDo construction, and have been upcycling craft supplies into beautiful pieces of Judaica. And, as always, our Gaga players are working on trivia as they earn their way back into the game.

Midweek Hebrew Club Update Our Hebrew clubs are back in full swing after a wonderful first term. Students are making great progress and having fun at the same time. Each week they engage in meaningful prayer, learn about the weekly Torah portion, play games, and work on reading skills in a variety of ways.

Guardians of the Earth! Our classes are doing what they can to help take care of the earth. This year we have added soft plastic recycling and food snack composting, and students are being mindful of water and electricity use. We look forward to Tu B’Shvat this month and celebrating the birthday of the trees.

Thursday, February 20 at 7:00pm at Temple Sholom Would you risk everything - your future, your citi-zenship, even your life - to help a brother in need? In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia

and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal - "volunteers from abroad" - this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride. ABOVE AND BEYOND is their story. This is a men-only evening. Cost: $5 Men’s Club member; $10 Non Men’s Club member. Register at: www.templesholom.ca

Thursday, March 12 at 7:00pm at Temple Sholom with Richard Kurland.

Recent polls suggest that a majority of Canadians have concerns about immigration and believe that we are too welcoming to immigrants. But are their fears and concerns

based on evidence? Richard will address many of the major issues surrounding Canadian immigra-tion today. There will be a Q & A following his talk.

Bio: Richard is a Temple member and an immigra-tion lawyer and policy analyst. He has been invited as an expert witness on immigration issues by Parliamentary committees from 1994 to present and was awarded a medal by the Senate of Canada in 2017 in recognition of his valuable service to the nation.

Cost: $5 Men's Club members and $10 non-members & guests. Includes light refreshments Register at: www.templesholom.ca.

SPECIAL SENIOR’S PROGRAMS

BOOK CLUB WITH RABBI DAN - "HERE ALL ALONG" This past winter break, I read one of the best, most articulate, and personal explanations of how Judaism is relevant to living as a human being in the early 21st century -“Here All Along” by Sarah Hurwitz.

After a decade as a political speechwriter, serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama, a

senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama, and chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 presidential campaign, Sarah Hurwitz decided to apply her skills as a communicator to writing a book . . . about Judaism.

Sarah Hurwitz writes beautifully about her journey from Hebrew School dropout to thoughtful commentator on her Jewish heritage. She paints a vision of a Judaism that is wise, intellectually rigorous, experiential, accessible and frankly exciting. She is on a mission to close this gap by

sharing the profound insights she discovered on everything from Jewish holidays, ethics, and prayer to Jewish conceptions of G-d, death, and social justice. In this entertaining and accessible book, she shows us why Judaism matters and how its message is more relevant than ever, and she inspires Jews to do the learning, questioning, and debating required to make this religion their own.

I invite you to read it over the next few weeks (www.amazon.ca/Here-All-Along-Spirituality-Life/dp/0525510710), and then join me at my home for an intimate discussion of the book and its themes for ONE of these two small gatherings:

• Wednesday, February 26 at 12:30pm (light lunch provided) OR

• Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30pm (light dessert provided)

Saleem Ashkar also had encourage-ment from conductor Zubin Mehta, who programmed a performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23, with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra when Saleem was 17. These are hands-on workshops and will be held on the following Sundays at 10:15-11:30am at Temple Sholom.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2020: Get Growing Together! Plan Your Own Home Garden with Stacy Friedman

It may be dark and cold, but now is the time to dream up spring gardens! Gardening is fun, brings together community and family, gets everyone outside and connected with the Earth, teaches us about the natural world, opens spaces for discuss-

ing values and practicing caring, rewards us with tasty treats, and inspires family cooking experienc-es! In this workshop, we’ll explore Vancouver’s grow-ing cycle and begin to plan our 2020 gardens. Wheth-er you are an experienced gardener or just want to experiment with what will survive on your windowsill, you will gain inspiration, confidence, new knowledge

and ideas, and even come home with seedlings to get a head start on your 2020 garden!

*Note: Participants do not need to have a garden space to participate in this workshop. If you do

have one, however, you may want to bring your garden dimensions to the workshop.

Participants are encouraged to bring recycled containers (such as yogurt containers, salad clam shells, or recycled pots) in which to bring seedlings home. We will also have a small seed swap so if you have extra seeds, please bring them to share!

Bio: Stacy Friedman brings 14 years of experience learning and growing through facilitating intergenerational garden-based programs in beautiful Coast Salish territory. Stacy is a Master Gardener and former classroom teacher and holds an MA in Curriculum and Pedagogy. She has worked with children, youth, university students, educators, farmers, elders, and other community members to care for the land, grow, harvest, cook, eat, and learn together. URGENT CALL TO ACTION:

We have talked about getting the Climate Crisis on the Canadian Jewish community's national agenda, that agenda is largely shaped by CIJA (Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs) here in Canada. CIJA just announced their annual survey to see what the Jewish community cares about.

PLEASE take this survey, tell them you care about the Climate Crisis. Tell them the Jewish community must show leadership on the Climate Emergency; that it is a fundamentally Jewish issues to be Shomrei Ha’Ada-mah, Guardians of the Earth. Please urge your Jewish friends across Canada to do the same.

Here is a link to the survey https://cija.ca/you/ Do it today and please share this message.
