SinaiCares. This is more than just a slogan. It’s how we conduct ourselves as a kehillah kedosha, a holy community. We care about our members, our community, and the world. As we celebrate our twin holidays of redemption, Purim and Passover, let us turn to their stories to inspire us in our sacred task of caring.
Both redemptions came about because of caring. In the Purim narrative, the Book of Esther, Mordechai tells Esther of Haman’s evil plot to get rid of the Jews. Esther then bravely spoke to her husband, the king, in order to save her and to save the Jewish people. Mordechai and Esther, in the face of impending darkness, cared enough to stand up for justice to save us. In fact, the rabbis teach us that in the world to come, Purim will be one of the only holidays that we will continue to celebrate because of it’s message that we are responsible for our own salvation, no one else.The Passover story follows a similar plot. After over four hundred years of slavery, Exodus teaches us that God heard our cries. God then approached Moses which sets into motion the narrative of liberation which
we celebrate year after year. The seder, with its special foods, is an educational tool to help us relive the greatest journey in the history of our people. But while you are enjoying your delicious matzoh ball soup and charoset, try to remember that this whole thing only came about because, in this case, God cared enough to redeem us.
Spring, our beautiful season of cherry blossoms and warming weather, is also the perfect time of year to ask yourself, “What do I care about? How can I renew my commitment to Temple Sinai?” We have many ways here of showing we care. Our Kathie Rabinovitz SinaiCares initiative is getting off the ground. We are looking for volunteers who want to visit others in our community. We need drivers to deliver cards and challah to those who are struggling. And we also want to know if you or someone you know is having a difficult time. It is hard to ask for help. We like to think of ourselves as self-reliant independent beings. But each of us needs some support sometimes. So please, don’t hesitate to ask. We can help you. We want to help you. We really do care.
You can also show that you care by supporting like-minded communities in Israel. Right now, we have an important opportunity to support the growing number of liberal and reform Jews in Israel. If you haven’t already done so, please vote for the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) to represent us and our values in the World Zionist Organization (WZO). The more votes we cast, the more we show that we care about an Israel which is pluralistic, diverse, democratic, and open. A strategic plan sets the goals and priorities of an organization and describes how it will achieve them at a high level. Any well-managed organization should have one, and Temple Sinai does. It is Sinai at Sixty and Beyond (tinyurl.com/Sinai-at-60), which our Long Range Planning Committee, now our Strategic Planning Committee, issued in 2009. It contained six over-arching themes and goals along with objectives based on them in individual areas of the temple’s
operations, and it has guided us for the past five years.
For example, one of the themes was to create a strong sense of community, and we have worked hard to do that, most recently with the launch of the Kathie Rabinovitz SinaiCares program this past fall. Similarly, one of the objectives was to be a leader in social action, and we have reinvigorated our programs in this area over the past five years. The plan is flexible, and we expanded on the objectives in the report as we achieved them or our circumstances changed. Nevertheless, no plan lasts forever, and we are now about to start creating a new one.
The process of developing a strategic plan is just as important as the document itself, if not more so. In particular, it is critical
that you, our members, have ample opportunity to provide input. Last time, to ensure that this happened, we:
• Conducted a congregational survey, administered primarily online in August and September 2008, which close to 900 people responded to, a huge response rate that showed how interested and engaged our congregation is in the life of the temple.
• Held formal, facilitator-led listening sessions in October and November 2008 that 116 people, about 10% of the congregation (also a very high response rate), participated in that enabled the committee to probe more deeply into issues the survey raised.
We are going to repeat both of these steps as we develop our new strategic plan. In December, I said that we expected to issue the survey this summer. However, the Strategic Planning Committee, under the able leadership of Marcie Solomon, has made rapid progress in developing it.
Therefore, sometime in March, you will receive an email from the temple inviting you to participate in our new congregational survey. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to influence the future of our congregation.

PRAYING WITH OUR FEETSaturday, April 18 at 9 AM
Our regularly scheduled worship, including Kehillat Shabbat and Torah study will be held at the temple. We will also hold “Praying With Your Feet” Shabbat service
projects at A Wider Circle. This is a wonderful opportunity to observe Shabbat through tikkun olam, repairing the world. Volunteers at A Wider Circle will help load furniture, restock household items, sort through donations, repair objects, and whatever else may be needed. Summiting Kilimanjaro: A Trek To The Roof of AfricaMonday, March 9 at 12:45 PM

Come hear Louis Nagel’s story of a physical and spiritual journey to the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. It was the fulfillment of a dream that began with an adolescent reading of Ernest Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro and was fueled by a desire to witness this alpine landscape as climate change threatens its enigmatic grandeur. It tells of an 8,000 mile flight, a 60 mile hike and a climb to an altitude of over 19,000 feet illustrated with experiences, insights and photographs.
Louis Nagel has been an education professional for over thirty years with experience in teaching age groups from pre-school to senior adults. He has traveled extensively in European countries and Israel.
Three Waves of Jewish Immigration to China: 1845-1941Monday, April 13 at 12:45 PM
Guest Speaker: Dr. Liliane Willens, author of Stateless in Shanghai
Sephardim merchants from the Middle East arrived in China in the mid-19th century. In
the 1920s, Russian Ashkenazic Jews fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution arrived in China. And in the 1930s, Jewish refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found refuge in China. Dr. Willens will discuss the fate of these communities over time along with her book, Stateless in Shanghai.
Liliane Willens was born of Russian Jewish parents in the former French Concession of Shanghai, China. She experienced World War II under the Japanese military occupation, and lived under the People’s Republic of China before immigrating to the United States.
She received her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from Boston University and taught at Boston College and MIT. After moving to Washington, DC, she worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Peace Corps.
ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST WITH WILLIAM KRISTOLMonday, March 9 at 7 PM
The Israel Affairs Committee presents an evening with William Kristol, founder and editor of The Weekly Standard, the influential journal of politics and ideas located in Washington, D.C. Kristol is also a regular panelist on Fox News Sunday and an analyst for the Fox News Channel. Before starting the Weekly Standard in 1995, Mr. Kristol led the Project for the Republican Future, where he helped shape the strategy that produced the 1994 Republican congressional victory. Prior to that, Mr. Kristol served as chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle during the first Bush Administration, and to Education Secretary William Bennett under President Reagan. Before coming to Washington in 1985, Mr. Kristol was on the faculty of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government (1983-1985) and the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania (1979-1983).

As we prepare for the opening of TSRS registration for the 2015-2016 school year on Friday, May 1 at 11 AM, we are pleased to offer the following learning programs and study opportunities for the 2015-2016 school year:

In both our Judaic and Hebrew learning programs, we understand that sometimes your schedule and our schedule don’t match up! We know that you value Jewish learning as much as we do, and strive to make it an accessible and meaningful option for your life.
In hopes of a smooth registration process for all, here are some things to consider, remember, and keep in mind:
• Stay tuned to communication from TSRS – during the months of March and April we’ll be sending helpful registration tips and reminders, as well as updated information about programming and curriculum.
• If you are currently a Temple Sinai member, but not currently enrolled and planning to enroll for 2015-2016, please contact our Youth Education Office Manager, Réco Thomas at [email protected] and share with her your preferred email contact and the grade your child(ren) will be enrolling in. We want to make sure you receive all the information we send out!
• Financial commitments need to up-to-date in order to register your child(ren) for the 2015-2016 school year, please. If you have any questions, please contact Ellen Agler, Executive Director at [email protected]
• Plan ahead! We hope you’ll use the month of April to connect with friends and family to plan ahead for carpool plans and friend requests (for Sunday classes only). Having that information in mind at registration will help ensure a smooth process for all of us.
• Got your online member log-in and password? Help us make a smooth registration process! During the month of April, please login and UPDATE your contact information. If you’ve misplaced it, no worries…just contact Marna Barany at [email protected] and she’ll get it to you.
• Keep in mind, session requests for new students and session change requests for current students are processed on a first-come-first-served basis. Please keep this in mind as you plan your day for May 1.
• We’re here to help! If you have any questions, thinking out loud to do, challenges to share…please don’t hesitate to be in touch. We are honored to be a part of your family’s Jewish journey, and can’t wait to see how it continues in the 2015-2016 school year.

The annual TSNS auction is a critical piece of the school’s budget. It is our most important fundraising event of the year.
As is true of many public and non-profit schools in our area, there is a significant gap at TSNS between operating costs and tuition fees. Fundraising efforts bridge that gap, giving our children access to the highest quality classrooms, teachers, and a physical environment that helps them develop and grow based on the latest research in early childhood education.
With the support of our community we can continue to make this a reality.
TSNS CELEBRATES SHABBAT: L’DOR VA’DOR
Shabbat is a joyous time in the Nursery School. A TSNS Grandmother, our 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds, elementary school aged TSNS alumnae, and TSNS Teacher Kornelia Kovacs gather around the Shabbat candles. Special visitors and birthday children are always invited up to the bimah “help” light the candles.
The familiar presence of our clergy, who participate in Shabbat Sing on a rotating basis, brings a special excitement to the gathering.
On this Friday, Rabbi Goldstein brought her warmth and enthusiasm to join Sally in leading a Simin Tov and Mazel Tov in honor of a new baby that had just been born.
Cantor Croen has been leading the candle lighting for over two decades. We are lucky to be able to share the rich traditions of our heritage from generation to generation.

Israel, current Jewish immigrants in U.S., family relationships and the weight of family history……..there would be lots to talk about.”

MORE THAN $70,000 DONATED FOR SOLAR COOKER PURCHASES
With the funds collected at the 2014 Chanukah Mart, Temple Sinai members have demonstrated their continuing concern for victims of the Sudanese Government’s genocide by purchasing solar cooker kits for Darfuri families living in exile in Chad. Since the temple undertook this project in 2007, we have raised $70,216.20 to purchase these life-saving kits.
By using solar power to cook their meals, Darfuri women can avoid rape, branding and murder by not having to hunt for firewood outside the relative safety of their refugee camps. In fact, an independent evaluation has documented that the use of these cooking devices has reduced firewood-gathering trips by more than 85 percent. Solar cooking also provides an income stream to the women in the camps, who are paid to manufacture the aluminum shields included in the kits and to provide cooking lessons to other refugee women. Switching to solar cooking also allows girls to stay in the camps’ make-shift schools because they don’t have to spend hours hunting for increasingly scarce firewood. And solar cooking has the added benefit of reducing de-forestation: one kit saves one ton of wood annually.
Donations from Temple Sinai members have helped to buy nearly 2,000 solar cookers kits, but the need is still great. Over 225,000 Darfuri women and children live in refugee camps and tens of thousands of families have not yet received this critical equipment. Even those who already have cookers are still in need; aluminum shields only last for a year and the kits come with only a year’s supply of the plastic bags required to make the cookers work.

Never run a 5K? Are your running shoes collecting dust? Sinai House is preparing to host its first 5K (3.1 miles) race (walkers also welcome!) along Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park on Sunday, May 17. We’d like to support Temple Sinai members interested in training for the race. Using a 5K training app, we will provide a weekend group run for new and experienced runners (any pace) for the 9 weeks preceding the race. We will meet for training runs on Sunday mornings at Temple Sinai during the early and late religious school sessions. This is not limited to Religious School parents!!! Interested? LIBRARY NEWS
The library has great new books and displays over the next two months. Books on Purim, which falls on March 4 and Passover, which begins with Shabbat on April 3 are featured on the kiosk, including non-fiction with historical information and celebration hints, cookbooks, and fiction. Children’s books are displayed on the round table next to the kiosk. As always, a cart with Haggadot to check out for home use will be available.
Please note our regular display of new fiction on the kiosk and new non-fiction in the bookcase facing the library door next to the librarian’s desk. DVD’s are in the bookcase just to right of the Library entrance. These include many classic and new DVD’s from Israel, as well as more local sources. Suggestions for possible acquisitions are always welcome.
Be sure to check out the library on the TS website at templesinaidc.org/community/library. The library catalogue is available from anywhere—check to see if we have a book you would like to read. If that book has been taken out, simply email the librarian at [email protected] to place it on hold for you when the book is returned.
The Temple Sinai Women of Reform Judaism (TSWRJ) has once again given a substantial gift to the Library Fund for purchase of new books about Jewish women’s issues and interests, as well as special categories, like family concerns. The Library Committee is most grateful for the ongoing generosity of TSWRJ, as all book and periodical purchases are dependent upon donations. In coming months, there will be a display featuring books purchased from this gift. The kiosk currently features books relating to March as Women’s History Month, most of which have been purchased with past TSWRJ gifts, as noted in frontis-piece book plates.
The library continues to team with other temple committees to enrich programs. There are regular displays of books relating to program topics, as well as copies of relevant articles. Check out the library when you want to know more relating to the topic of an upcoming event.
The library welcomes volunteers who love books and would enjoy helping out with some of the necessary tasks for library maintenance. Again, funding for staff to do these tasks is minimal and the library’s welcoming atmosphere and useful displays depend on volunteer efforts.
