HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH MONT BELVIEU, TEXAS July 8, 2018

We pray to bond with God, whether to praise him, to ask forgiveness for our sins, to thank him, or to ask him for help. Prayer is our connection to God, who created us and wants to have a relationship with us. Our prayer is always a response to God’s invitation: “Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him” (CCC #2560).

What is Expected of Catholics?

Successful families have guidelines that help each member grow in love and virtue. Also a family, the Catholic Church recommends basic guidelines so that her children, too, can grow in love and virtue:

Come home every weekend: "You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on Holy days of Obligation and rest from servile labor." God wants to see us - often!

Take responsibility: “You shall confess your sins at least once a year.” Since we are prone to sin, it’s important to repair our relationship with Our Lord.

Proper nourishment: “You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season.” In the Eucharist, Jesus nourishes us with his Body and Blood – at every Mass!

Make room for love: “You shall observe the days of fastin and abstinence established by the Church.” Fasting helps us free our hearts for God’s love.

Contribute to the family: “You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.” Whether we donate money, time or resources, our help matters (CCC #2042-2043).

A promise to protect….pledge to heal! Your local Victim Assistance Coordinator is available to help you or anyone who has been abused or victimized by someone representing the Catholic Church. We will listen to your needs and support you. We will help you make a formal complaint and arrange a personal meeting with the bishop or his delegate, if desired. We encourage you to come forward and speak out. The Victim Assistance Coordinator in your diocese is:

Mrs. Becky Richard, MS, LPC 409-924-4433 [email protected]

Obstacles The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the lesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is suf icient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ActivityoftheWeek

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further re lect on the Sunday readings.

A prophet is someone illed with God’s love. Share a story of someone who brought you God’s love this week. Do you see God acting in any leaders in your community? As a family, write letters to some of these people and thank them for the work they do for the community. When we are open to the gift of faith we recognize the power of Jesus in our lives. What stops you from putting your faith in Jesus? For your family prayer this week ask Jesus to help your family live your faith at home. Talk about how you can be more supportive of each other. Pour some perfumed oil in a bowl. Form a circle and have family members mark each other’s palms with the oil as a sign of sharing Jesus’ love with each other.
