MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School is an outstanding co-educational Catholic School and we are pleased to share the following information with you. This prospectus provides you with valuable information about our school community. It includes many policies and procedures that are in use, and is intended to act as a significant source of information for parents and students. As a Catholic school our mission is to invite young people into dialogue concerning the ultimate realities of life, the message of Jesus, and our Josephite, Catholic heritage. Thus the Religious Education and the Faith Formation programmes are central to the curriculum. Whilst I recognise that not all students are members of the Catholic Church, it is nevertheless a requirement for all students to participate in Religious Education classes and Religious observances. Furthermore, we seek to live out our Christian faith in this community through liturgical celebrations, by the way we treat each other, and in the care that we show for those in need. The process of education is most successful when teachers and parents work in partnership with each other. We, the school staff, encourage the students to realise their potential over the coming years, and we encourage parents to be as involved as much as possible throughout the primary years. There are many opportunities for parental involvement including special occasions and events, Parents and Friends Association, information evenings and social gatherings. The key to partnership is communication. It is my genuine hope that we are able to maintain honest and open communication at all times. If there are any concerns or issues that arise, please feel encouraged to make contact, and for our part, we will aim to respond as soon as possible. Students at Tenison Woods Catholic School have many opportunities to be involved in the educational program and to excel. I encourage each and every student to make the most of their primary years of schooling. The benefits will be in proportion to the effort that is applied. We offer an enormous range of cultural, religious and sporting activities. Additionally we host several social justice days to support Catholic Charities. Graduates of Tenison Woods Catholic School are held in very high esteem in the community. This is due not only to the quality of the students themselves but also the very professional and hardworking staff that we have here. The school has a long and proud history and we strive for our students to emulate the Tenison Ten when they leave us and embark upon their next chapter of their schooling. We trust that everyone will value their association with the school community and do all in their power to contribute in a positive way to the life of the school. Pathways for our graduates are many and varied; there are several terrific options for secondary schools within short distance for you to consider. Please note we do not feed directly into any one particular Catholic School. On behalf of the Tenison Woods Catholic School community I thank you for taking the time to discern about our school and its rich history and tradition. I would be happy to meet with you to discuss in more detail what this prospectus sets out in brief. Peter Mercer Principal

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Tenison Woods is a Catholic School with an enrolment of approximately 150 students providing a Reception to Year 6 learning environment and program.

CATHOLIC IDENTITY Tenison Woods Catholic School was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1933 and was originally called St Joseph’s, Richmond. In 1997 St Joseph’s amalgamated with Kilmara Catholic School, Thebarton and the name changed to Tenison Woods. The Official Opening and Blessing of Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School took place on the 9th March 1997.

PATRON OF OUR SCHOOL

FATHER JULIAN TENISON WOODS, 1832 – 1889

Fr. Julian Tenison Woods was the co-founder with Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop of the Sisters of St. Joseph. These two people had a vision of education for all Catholic children, and because of this they worked hard and tirelessly to bring it to fruition. Fr. Julian was born in England of Irish parents, one of 11 children (10 boys and 1 girl) and he became a Secular Priest in St. Patrick's Church in Grote Street in 1857 and also worked on priestly duties throughout the South East of South Australia; mainly in Penola. Fr. Woods was an extremely clever man, he went on to become the first Director of Catholic Education (1867-1871) in S.A. and the Northern Territory; the Editor of the Catholic newspaper "The Southern Cross", and a highly recognised scientist and environmentalist. Fr. Julian was a humble, hardworking man who was an educator, a geologist, a scientist and a spiritual director.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BELONG TO THE TENISON WOODS COMMUNITY

As a school community we celebrate the charism of Julian Tenison Woods by living his love for the environment and nature. We do this through many of our sustainability initiatives such as recycling, being a wrapper free school, composting, growing fruit and vegetables, water conservation and limiting our carbon footprint. We celebrate diversity just like Julian did when he worked so closely with many different groups of people in the remote areas of South Australia. Julian was a faithful man and dedicated his life to God. We follow his footsteps by engaging in prayer experiences every day and celebrating God’s everlasting love for us. Julian was passionate about helping those in need and we aim to emulate his compassion by being involved in many social justice programs; reaching out to help those in need, both locally and globally. At Tenison Woods School we celebrate the gifts of Wonder and Awe and foster a sense of enquiry and curiosity about our world.

We welcome your child and your family into a safe, caring environment where learning is both futures focused and placed in the context of Christian values….a school where our Catholic Tradition is celebrated.

We believe:

That all people should be treated with respect and dignity in a spirit of truth, justice and reconciliation

That everyone has the right to feel safe all of the time That staff and students have the right to teach and learn That all behaviour has a purpose That social and cultural influences affect people’s behaviour That open communication is essential That quality education is best achieved in a learning environment that is non-coercive,

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL SCHOOL BASED

Competencies:

Thinking & Questioning

Identity

The Language of Learning

Managing Self

Connecting & Reflecting

Collaboration

THEORETICAL BASE

Choice Theory:

Personal Responsibility • the only person whose behaviour we can control is our own • all we can get from other people is information. How we deal with that information is our choice • I am responsible and accountable for my own actions

Basic Needs

All human beings are driven by the following 5 genetic needs:

love and belonging

power

fun

survival

freedom

Total Behaviour

Made up of four inseparable components:

acting

thinking

feeling

physiological

All behaviour is chosen, but we only have direct control over the acting and thinking components. The choices we make in our thinking and acting affect our feeling and physiology.

All we can give another person is information. We can’t make them think, feel, do, or physically react in a certain way. We can only offer, suggest, model, or try to force and manipulate, but at the end of it, they will have the choice whether to do it or not.

FROM KINDY TO SCHOOL Your child’s first experience at Tenison Woods Catholic School is important and we endeavour to make this transition a positive start to a lasting and life-giving relationship.

We enable this to happen by:

Having a staff member visit and communicate with the Kindergarten

Inviting parents to Welcome and Induction meetings

Arranging Orientation visits prior to your child starting school

The induction visits enable you and your child to meet the class teacher and other students and to become familiar with the class and our school community.

RECEPTION Reception (or The Foundation year according to ACARA) is a time for children to:

Settle into school life

Become familiar with rules and routines

Further develop their social skills and build a positive self-image

Continue their learning focusing on the important foundation steps in literacy and mathematics and introduce them to all curriculum areas

Build relationships with their peers and other students

Your child’s first year at our school is also a time for you as parents to become actively involved in our community and to work in partnership with your child’s teacher.

‘Working together makes all the difference’

SCHOOL CURRICULUM In the midst of a world of educational, social and economic change the focus on the holistic growth of the child remains the surest way our school can prepare students for the uncertainties of the future.

SCHOOL CURRICULUM The Australian Curriculum is underpinned by:

CROSS CURRICULUM PRIORITIES

CATHOLIC ETHOS The overarching purpose of Catholic Schools of the past, as well as the future, is to bring the Good News of Jesus to all who hear it. In the midst of a world of educational, social and economic change the focus on the holistic growth of the individual remains the surest way catholic school can prepare students for the uncertainties of the future.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER HISTORIES AND CULTURES Active engagement of inclusive curriculum practices which reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, knowledge, histories, cultures and spirituality. A genuine commitment to Reconciliation, guided by principles of personal dignity, social justice and equity, which reflects the Gospel message and the mission of the Church.

ASIA AND AUSTRALIA’S ENGAGEMENT WITH ASIA This perspective requires students to develop skills, knowledge and understandings related to Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION It is by the quality of interactions and relationships that all students learn to understand and appreciate difference, to value diversity and learn to respond with dignity and respect to all through mutually enriching interactions.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING Social and emotional competencies are integral to academic and work success and are the basis of resilience, relational quality and social capital.

SUSTAINABILITY Students have access to current information about environment issues and promotion of a reflective and responsive attitude towards stewardship of the gifts of creation.

GENERAL CAPABILITIES:

The Australian Curriculum specifically covers the following General Capabilities:

LITERACY Literacy is central to all learning in school and the ways that students demonstrate their learning. Students need to draw on increasingly complex and sophisticated literacy knowledge and skills to understand and engage with content across the curriculum.

NUMERACY The complexity of contemporary society requires young people to be increasingly numerate. They need to recognise the mathematical basis of authentic problems and engage constructively in their solution.

Page 15: Tenison Woods Catholic School

Tenison Woods Catholic Primary School 15

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) Increasingly ICT permeates every area of our society and lives. Students need to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to use ICT to support contemporary learning and living. ICT affords the opportunities to personalise learning and to learn both within and out of school.

CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING Critical and creative thinking are fundamental to students developing a habit of effective thinking. Students learn to select from a range of thinking strategies and to adapt and transfer their knowledge to new contexts. Increasingly, they manage of their own learning as they become confident and autonomous learners and thinkers.

ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR The examination of ethics through the stages of schooling provides students with the opportunity for engagement with ethical values, principles and concepts that improve moral judgement. This enables them to build a strong ethical outlook when faced with uncertainty and conflicting claims and aims to strengthen their sense of moral purpose and vision.

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL COMPETENCE The development of personal and social competence assists students in becoming successful learners, friends and family members who are well equipped to contribute positively and productively to the workforce and to civic life. For individuals, learning personal and social skills can improve their academic learning and enhance their motivation to cooperate and achieve. On a social level, students who have developed solid social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, develop resilience, resolve conflict, and feel positive about themselves and the world around them.

INTERCULTURAL UNDERSTANDING The general capability Intercultural understanding responds to the imperative for all young Australians to become responsible local and global citizens, equipped through their education for living and working successfully in the globalised world of the 21st century.

THE SCHOOL BOARD Tenison Woods Catholic School is under the financial management of the School Board. COMMUNICATION

NEWSLETTERS The newsletter contains important information about events at school and is produced fortnightly.

The e-newsletter is available on the School Website .

Class newsletters give detailed information about students’ learning and individual class activities. These are emailed to the class group and a hard copy is given to each student.

PARENT INFORMATION SESSIONS Staff regularly communicate with parents about student development through student workbooks, emails, formal and informal interviews. At the beginning of each year parents/caregivers meet with class teachers to share hopes and expectations. Written Reports on your child’s progress is sent home towards the end of Term’s 2 and 4. Formal parent/teacher conversations are conducted at the end of Terms 1 and 3. Parents are encouraged to maintain communication with teachers through either a personal appointment or email.

This group is a most necessary and vital part of the School community and all parents are encouraged to take part in its many activities.

Parents are the most powerful educative influence in the life of the child. Much of the child’s value system is derived from parental influence. The parents, as first educators of their children, share with the school the responsibility of their children’s education.

Support the efforts of the staff to develop Catholic Christian attitudes and values developed at home through active participation in the School and Parish.

Assist and participate in functions organised by the school.

Attend meetings for preparation of the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation.

Attend Parent/Teacher nights. [Acquaintance Night and Learning Conferences]

Raise funds through the activities of the Parents and Friends Committee.

Voice any concerns, compliments or complaints in a spirit of collaboration and honesty.

Assist with sport and extra curricular activities.

Demonstrate an active involvement in the development of School policies.

The wearing of sunglasses is encouraged in line with the general recommendation of the Anti-Cancer Foundation.
