ack in the day I’m sure many of us took advantage of carpooling to get to work. Why not try it again? If you simply don’t want to drive to Bear Creek Park for our May Barbeque (or don’t want to have to pay for all the gas), consider teaming up with a fellow retiree or 2 and riding together! Might be more fun that

way and it just might be enough incentive to get you out of the house and to the goings on! We want everyone to come – no excuses allowed!

Winter/Spring Luncheon Held March 20, 2013 – by Alton Milrany

arch 20th started as a gloomy day but improved substantially when 75 Tenneco retirees and guests (two no-shows) met at BraeBurn Country Club for our annual Winter/Spring Luncheon. Although there were some parking problems and some people were served late, a good time was had by all. Our

thanks to Norma Roady for being our hostess at BraeBurn.

M Our guest speaker was Bob Eury, Executive Director of Houston Downtown Management District and President of Central Houston. He provided lots of information on what has gone on in downtown for the last 30 years. For example, over that period of time there have been 180+ public and private projects totaling over $7.7 billion dollars. He talked about sustainability issues making downtown a place to live, work, play, and visit and the challenges it faces. Among these are retail (the closing of Macy’s due to loss of lease), homelessness, and making it a place for families. Being a long time marathoner, he thanked Tenneco for its commitment to establishing the Houston Marathon as one of the best in the world. In his response to our thank you email, Bob responded, “I’m glad I could participate. You have a great group and wonderful memories. I deeply appreciate Tenneco and its impact on our city and my own personal life.” After our meal and Bob’s presentation, Gary Cheatham reported on the status of the Tenneco history book and asked that we reserve October 25, 2013 for a celebration of Tenneco’s 70th anniversary of its founding. Earl Sturgeon gave an update on upcoming Explorer Day Trips and encouraged all to sign up. See our website homepage and another article in this newsletter for more details. Door prize drawing winners for the May 15th BBQ at Bear Creek were:

Carolyn Hannah Beverly Cheatham Charlie Bass Bob Prussner

We formally adjourned shortly after 1:00 but several stuck around to visit and catch up. You are encouraged to do so at all of our events.

Who’s Where Doing What – by Larry Loyd

t’s always good to hear from new members, which include Tom and Alice Broughton. Tom retired from El Paso in 2010, and Alice will retire from Kinder Morgan in May 2013. They are looking forward to retirement life together, and plan to travel every other month during the next two years. They already have a trip to

Hawaii scheduled for May, and two trips to North Europe in July and August. Following that will be an Asia trip to Taiwan in October and into other Asian countries. They will visit friends in Boston in September. Tom and Alice have three boys, all single, and both have two sisters in Houston. Tom likes golfing, fishing and boating. Alice likes shopping, music, dancing and eating out. Welcome to the Tenneco Retiree Club!

I

Other travelers include Louis and Maria Salinas. Along with two of Maria’s sisters, they visited Spain and Portugal last October. They had a wonderful time and in twelve days visited Madrid, Santiago de Compostial, Lisbon, and Fatima. Their daughter, Christina, and her husband, Brian Payne, are expecting their first child in September, which will be Louis and Maria’s sixth grandchild.

The following is an informative update from T. Scott Atkinson, who left Tenneco in 1984:

“My wife and I moved to San Antonio from Houston in 1986. We had a good run in Houston, living in Clear Lake City for 10 years and the Memorial area for another nine. Over the years since leaving Tenneco, our Tenneco Telecom group, primarily consisting of John Saccente, Russ Roy, Bill Gaffney, Bill Bodwell, Dave Noll and myself held annual dinner reunions in Houston. Slowly our group dispersed due to health, employment and other reasons. I initially worked in the downtown building and then subsequently in the Computer Center on the West Loop, leaving Tenneco in 1984.

“In 1989, I accepted employment with USAA. An interesting situation occurred with USAA when I was the Manager of the Ten-Net Project at Tenneco, their telecom group visited Houston where I briefed them on the Tenneco Network. Now I was working side by side with some of the same individuals that visited Tenneco. That proved to be an interesting scenario.

“I subsequently took early retirement in 1997 from USAA and organized a consulting company, ICSI Consulting Services. After 12 years, my wife and I decided we needed to take a break from the business world and we both became volunteer workers for several non-profit associations; the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Assistance League of San Antonio. Today we are still engaged with them.

Page 5: Tenneco Retiree Club Newslettertennecoretiree.com/newslettersb/TRC MAY 2013 NEWSLETTERwpics.pdf · Tenneco Retiree Club Newsletter . Volume XXXV, ... Henry “Hank” & Jenelle H

“As a result of my participation with IEEE (the world’s largest technical-professional association), I have experienced working from the local level all the way up to the international executive level, currently serving two main positions: Vice Chair, Member Geographic Activities Board and as the Executive Chair of an upcoming technical communications conference + IEEE Globecom 2014, to be held in Austin, Texas. As a result of serving in these two positions, my wife and I have been blessed with traveling the world. The locations include: France, Russia, Argentina, Panama, England, Turkey, Finland, Taiwan, Greece, Italy, Scotland plus many cities in America (Los Angeles, San Francisco, St. Louis, Denver, Houston, Dallas, New York, Cincinnati, Washington DC, New Orleans and many others).

“My wife Margaret and I have two daughters, Elizabeth (who was a Tenneco summer intern while in high school) and Charlotte. Both have families and a total of 5 children. We try our best to spend a lot of time with the grandchildren, taking them on trips with us to many of the sites listed above.

“Anyone wishing to connect with us can reach us a 210-698-9328 or [email protected].

Jim and Wilma Watkins informed us that Olivia Ann Martin arrived on September 14th, and Katherine Ann Harrison arrived on January 23rd, making them the proud great grandparents of 5 wonderful great grandchildren!! Congratulations!

Thanks to all who have contributed to the information we share here in each newsletter. Everyone likes to hear what our fellow Tenneco folks are doing, what activities you’re involved in, what trips you’ve taken, the volunteer work you’re doing, and simply what’s going on in your life. Keep those cards and letters coming! You can just jot down information on the back of your Luncheon reservation form, or send information directly to me at [email protected], or Larry L. Tenneco is 70! – by Gary Cheatham & Mike Kees

n February, we announced to all Retiree Club members that a Reunion was being planned to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Tenneco and the 25th year since the sale of Tenneco Oil Company. Plans are continuing and are being finalized in a number of areas. The date of Friday, October 25, 2013

has been reserved to allow us to highlight these milestones. In addition, a Tenneco Reunion web site is being established to give you more information about the exact location, the time, the costs and other pertinent items that you need to know. We expect that site to be announced in the very near future (hopefully by the end of April) and you will be so notified at that time.

I

In addition, you may have heard that an upcoming book about the history of Tenneco, including sections on TGT, E&P and P&M was being written. This article is to confirm that the rumor is true. A team of volunteers was assembled by Joe Foster and is committed to get the project finished. His team includes, Cliff Rackley, Bob Thomas, Harry Briscoe, Gary Cheatham, Dick Hines and Larry Augsburger.

The scope of the book project has evolved, and there is now considerable excitement about the variety and the amount of material that has been compiled. It will contain an account of the chronological history of Tenneco – where we came from, where we ended up and what we did along the way - and it will feature many significant events and turning points that shaped our company’s history. The book will also highlight our many acquisitions and discoveries, and review our effective business practices and unique culture.

We will be ready to distribute the Tenneco Book and make it an important part of our Reunion celebration in October. So we are well on our way with specific plans and much excitement, but there are still many items to be resolved before this date. One of our biggest concerns is our ability to identify, contact and attract a significant number of Tenneco Exes to the Reunion. This is where we are counting on you to help in the process. Two important details follow:

- 5 -

Page 6: Tenneco Retiree Club Newslettertennecoretiree.com/newslettersb/TRC MAY 2013 NEWSLETTERwpics.pdf · Tenneco Retiree Club Newsletter . Volume XXXV, ... Henry “Hank” & Jenelle H

First, once our Reunion website is up and running, we will be asking you to visit it and complete the registration form. The website is being designed to give you more information about specific details you will need to know. The website will also have a provision that will allow you to purchase your tickets online.

Second, you are reading this because we have your email address on file and you are a member of our Tenneco Retiree Club. We certainly DO NOT have an extensive database of addresses for all Tenneco Alums. We need your help here by asking you to forward this announcement to any and all Tenneco Exes in your Address Book. Also, once the website is announced a “Spread The Word” section will be available. This feature is critical to be certain as many as possible receive this news and have the opportunity to attend the Reunion. Please feel free to contact our Reunion Coordinator at [email protected], or by phone at (713) 683-9346 if you have any questions or can provide contact information for others. Many thanks there!

Again, once the website is up and running (more than likely before April is over) you will hear from us with many more details regarding this once in a lifetime event. So stay tuned!

Annual Stob Drivers Meeting Held – by George Benoit

he annual TGP Stob Drivers meeting was held on March 22, 2013 at Tio's Restaurant in Houston. This annual event celebrates the memory of the surveyors and company leaders who located and built the original pipelines between 1944 and 1996. This year’s event was hosted by Bob Brown who was hired

by Bill Hancock and who was a key part of the team of engineers who designed and developed many of the critical elements of the Tennessee Gas Pipeline system. This year, as many of you know, Bill Hancock will celebrate his 100th birthday in November. At Tio’s, all in attendance celebrated Bill’s milestone a little early by sharing a birthday cake. Additionally, several of the senior members of the group who were in attendance included B.B. McCurdy (94), Sanford Kreneck (86), Leroy Laycock (84), Ray Fisher (84), Zane Wise (86), Jay Harrington (88) and Dickey Scroggin who’s keeping his age a secret! A good time was enjoyed by all.

TENNECO RETIREE CLUB EXPLORER DAY TRIP REPORTS – by Earl Sturgeon

Trip to the Liberty Opry - Saturday, February 23, 2013

ou could not have found a better day in the middle of winter for a trip. The weather was clear, plenty of sun and the temperature very moderate. All of the Explorers were on time, ready to go, except one couple, Bill and Leah Fortney. Living in the Spring area they had the greatest distance to travel to our

Mall parking area. They called us on their cell phone and told us a section of the Sam Houston Toll Road was completely closed for weekend road repair and their vehicle was hardly moving. Since we were able to stay in touch with them we decided to wait past our scheduled departure time. Bill, when he arrived, was so thankful and grateful that we had waited. It was suggested that he could pay us back by buying our lunch. Discussions were held but it never came to fruition. We were about 20 minutes behind schedule when we left the parking lot but thanks to Hubert Jackson’s excellent driving we were only 10 minutes late when we arrived in Liberty.

Y

The Opry was scheduled for a 2:00 PM matinee performance so we needed to have lunch. We have found from previous trips that Ann’s Seafood Café, a local restaurant, very adequately fills the bill for handling a bus load of people. The food is very good and there is plenty of it, the service is adequate and it does not take forever to pay the bill. It would have been even quicker if Fortney had come through. I will have to back up in saying the servings were adequate because I could not get over the large number of Explorers that had to order a piece of pie to complete their meal. After we had finished our meal we took our group picture outside the restaurant before we boarded the bus.

t was only a few blocks to the Opry building that is located on the Court House Square. It was formerly a movie theater but it has now been renovated. An adjoining building has been taken over for Intermission and to serve snacks, drinks, etc. The auditorium seats about 400 and there was a full house. The format for today’s show was Country Legends and Western Swing. By the time everyone was seated the show started with the band playing a number that showed the individual talents of each member. I’ve always thought the band’s talent was the strongest part of the Opry performers. Nearly all of the band members also perform vocals. The first part of the performance is handled by the local vocalists and then there is a comedy break featuring “Booger Lee” Etheridge. He is as large as a barn and most of his material is not very new but he is a good entertainer.

Page 8: Tenneco Retiree Club Newslettertennecoretiree.com/newslettersb/TRC MAY 2013 NEWSLETTERwpics.pdf · Tenneco Retiree Club Newsletter . Volume XXXV, ... Henry “Hank” & Jenelle H

Now it was time for the guest vocalists. There were three; Trish Chambers, Eddy Edwards and Rebecca Sealy, all from Louisiana and all very talented. They were new. We had never seen them perform. Chambers sang a lot of Patsy Cline songs and Edwards sang songs that made Conway Twitty famous. They sang three songs each and then it was time for Intermission.

Intermission starts with the drawing of ticket stubs to see who is the winner of gifts furnished by local merchants. Our group hit the jackpot. The most winners we’ve had in the past were two. On this day we had four, the lucky ones being Betty Brashear, Carolyn Hannah, Linda Mahan and Jeff Stagg. After this is completed most of the people go next door for the snacks and to visit with the performers. You can talk with them, take their picture and, they like this better, buy their CDs, DVDs, etc. The Intermission lasts long enough to buy everything you want.

Group picture in front of Ann’s Seafood Café

The format for the second half was just about a repeat of the first, except, of course, all of the music and songs were different. I believe they save their most popular and well known songs to the last. I guess it is so you will remember them better. Eddy Edwards recited the “Rendecella and the Randsome Hence” version of the Cinderella Story that brought the House down. I have never heard anyone able to recite it all without a stumble or a mispronunciation of some of the words. Eddy did not make a bobble - it beat anyone we have ever heard.

It was 5:30 PM before the show was over. Our bus was waiting for us out front and we quickly loaded up. One of the owners of the Opry, Jay Cantu, boarded the bus and thanked us for coming and, of course, invited us back. We were soon on our way home. Several of the Explorers told me that this was the best performance of the many shows we have seen in Liberty. I certainly agree that it was one of the best. The new management has upgraded the talent and on this day the songs they selected were the ones we knew well and many were definitely our favorites. That makes a lot of difference when you are attending any show.

Our ETA back in Houston was 6:30 PM and when we arrived back at the Mall parking area it was exactly 6:30.There is no way to improve on that. What a day - the weather was great, our lunch was very good and everyone enjoyed the Opry performance. This bus trip has to be placed in the “WIN” column.

Be sure and check out many, many more pictures taken of this trip on our website!

Bluebonnet Sightseeing Tour - Thursday, March 28, 2013

hen Sunshine & I arrived at the Memorial City Mall parking area the bus was there and two Explorers, Margaret Overgoner and Dick Harrison, were already on board. I commented on how eager they were and Margaret mentioned she was the first one to arrive. I then had to tell her she was not first

because two others beat her by 24 hours. Ray & Bev Fisher had this trip scheduled on their calendar for March 27th and when they could not find a bus they went home and called me. They returned on the correct day and with nearly a bus full of Explorers we left on time in search of the elusive bluebonnets.

W We had been told from several sources that this was not a banner year because it had not rained when the flowers needed the rain. Since we nearly struck out last year it would not take many flowers for us to beat that. We discussed our plight with our driver, Hubert Jackson. Hubert is one of the most cooperative drivers in the business and he said, “I know where they are”. We said, “You take us there.” We started up Hwy 290 to Hempstead and we were nearly half way before we saw the first bonnet growing by the side of the road. We continued on Hwy 6 north of Hempstead and we saw quite a few flowers but they were mostly growing on the highway right of way, very few on private property. We continued driving north and turned east a few miles south of Navasota. This led us to the small village of White Hall. There, right near the center of the village, was a good size field covered with bluebonnets. We left the bus, walked around and admired the beauty, taking lots of pictures. We then took the next road going west back to Hwy 6 and turned south toward Hempstead.

- 9 -

After traveling just about ¾ of a mile there was a huge field of bluebonnets on the right, much larger than the one we had just left. Due to the growing of bushes along the property line the flowers were not easy to see. Driving down the highway you would miss them if you did not know they were there. This area was virgin

Page 10: Tenneco Retiree Club Newslettertennecoretiree.com/newslettersb/TRC MAY 2013 NEWSLETTERwpics.pdf · Tenneco Retiree Club Newsletter . Volume XXXV, ... Henry “Hank” & Jenelle H

territory to us for in all of the years of our travels we had never been here. It has been years since we have seen a field this large completely covered. It was a beautiful sight and most of us walked around so we could thoroughly enjoy it. Some of us did not act our age and frolicked around the flowers taking multiple pictures with cameras and cell phones.

Kay and LeRoy Laycock Next we made a U-turn on Hwy 6 and headed for Navasota. There we saw a lot of bluebonnets growing on the embankment along the roadway. They are beautiful any time they are in large numbers. We drove west through Navasota on Hwy 105 headed for Brenham. Navasota has a lot of beautiful old homes on the main road. It was a nice ride to Brenham and we saw a few bonnets but were more interested in what we were going to eat as it was now lunch time. A place in the downtown area of Brenham named “Must Be Heaven” was selected for lunch. The food is very good but they always have large crowds. The menu is primarily soup, salads, sandwiches and homemade pie. The format for eating is get in line, order your food, pay for it, pick it up and then carry it to a table. The owners love it when a bus load appears but the regular customers do not. We were lucky and got there early. Only a few people were in line so we had no problem but by the time all of us were served the line was all of the way to the front door. Two other buses did arrive. We enjoyed our lunch and afterwards we drove to the intersection of Hwys 290 and 36. There is an area behind some of the local businesses where flowers have been planted the last few years. The bonnets were not as thick this year but it was a nice view. Next we drove Hwy 290 to Chappell Hill and stopped at the Chappell Hill Sausage House so the Explorers could make a few purchases. We found a stairway suitable for our group picture so this was where we took it.

- 10 -

Explorers at Chappell Hill Sausage House It was now time to head for home. We saw a few more bluebonnets between Chappell Hill and Hempstead but not a lot. As the saying goes, “What is here today may not be here tomorrow.” Apparently the bluebonnets can fade away in a hurry. It turned out to be a good day mainly because of the two large fields we found. We definitely saw more flowers than we have the past two years. It was an enjoyable trip and, since it was Easter week, we arrived back in Houston earlier than usual. The extra time could well be spent getting ready to properly observe the Easter holidays.

T We post many more event pictures on our website than we are able to publish in our newsletter. All member contact information is on our website also – same as in the printed directory – but in a

different format – and it’s constantly updated online as things change. You will find all our newsletters dating back to when we first began our website (February 2003). We

are now posting a PDF version of our newsletter. The current newsletter should be posted for all to see about the same time the printed copy is mailed.

We’re Always Looking For Member Stories – Please Send Us Yours! - by Mike Kees

ost everyone has a story about what you’re volunteering for, where you’ve been traveling, your time in the military, etc., so feel free to either email or postal mail your remembrances to Mike Kees, ([email protected] or to 1807 Rustic Oak Lane, Seabrook, Texas 77586). We'll be more than

happy to help you with a little editing if you so desire. Once your stories are submitted and published in our newsletter they will also be made available online under the Retiree’s Profile tab on our website. Most of us, in fact, do have a story or 2 to tell so please let us hear from you!
