Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Student and Teacher Institute
The Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Student and Teacher Institute immerses student and teacher pairs in the history of the Normandy Invasion and the service members who gave their lives. Students and teachers attend lectures presented by leading World War II historians, participate in a scholarly study of the war memorials in the Washington, DC, area, and walk in the footsteps of history on the beaches of Normandy. The Institute culminates in a day of remembrance when the students eulogize the service member they have researched at the American Cemetery. Understanding Sacrifice Institute
Understanding Sacrifice is a year-long professional development opportunity that takes eighteen teachers on a journey of exploration and discovery through the lives of American heroes of WWII. It is conducted by National History Day®, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), and the National Cemetery Administration. Travel fees, materials, and most costs are covered for all accepted teachers. In return, teachers produce educational materials in a variety of disciplines. These classroom resources are then hosted for free on abmceducation.org to help teachers around the world reinvigorate the teaching and learning of WWII. Teachers will visit several ABMC and NCA cemeteries to honor individuals from their home states who sacrificed their lives in the war. For more information visit the webpage: abmceducation.org.

Sponsored jointly by the Tennessee Historical Society and Teaching with Primary Sources - MTSU
Wed., June 27, 2018 Volunteer State Community College, Gallatin Thurs., June 28, 2018 Tennessee State University, Nashville Tues., July 17, 2018 Boling University Center, Martin Wed., July 18, 2018 Elma Ross Public Library, Brownsville Wed., July 25, 2018 Washington County Schools, Jonesborough Thurs., July 26, 2018 East Tennessee History Center, Knoxville
These workshops are a joint presentation of the Tennessee Historical Society and Teaching with Primary Sources – MTSU, which is administered by the Center for Historic Preservation. Participants are introduced to Tennessee History Day, a year-long, project-based curriculum that engages students in grades 6-12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Topics of discussion include: how do students benefit from History Day? what projects can they develop? how does History Day lead to increased learning? how can student performance be measured? what state standards does History Day meet? what resources are available to teachers? Participants also are exposed to the Library of Congress’s Teaching with Primary Sources program, which helps teachers use the rich reservoir of digitized primary source materials to design challenging, high-quality instruction. Workshop participants will focus on skill building for project-based learning. The workshops begin at 9 am and end at 3:30 pm. The Brownsville workshop begins at 10 am.
Participating teachers receive a stipend, lunch, and curriculum resources. Only 20 spots are available at each workshop! To register, sign up at www.tennesseehistory.org/workshops.

Conflict and Compromise Offer Important Lessons Something special exists in Tennessee that you may miss if you simply relied on how politicians are often portrayed instead of seeing their interactions firsthand. Issues can certainly become partisan, and often do, but the way we conduct ourselves says a lot about how we govern. Republicans and Democrats can often disagree on a range of issues, but I often say that regardless of party or ideology we must learn to “disagree without being disagreeable.” That concept plays to the heart of this year’s Tennessee History Day topic, “Conflict and Compromise in History.” This year’s topic gives opportunities to demonstrate the impact Tennessee has had for generations on civil discourse. The women’s suffrage movement highlights how Tennessee played a pivotal role in the passage of the 19th Amendment, which in 1920 granted women the right to vote as the 36th and pivotal state to do so, the “Perfect 36.” The impact of Tennessee on our nation has been undeniable. In 1960, Nashville college students launched a series of peaceful sit-ins at local lunch counters challenging segregation. City officials and local businesses eventually reached an agreement with protestors to desegregate these lunch counters which paved the way for a new era in Nashville society. Neither of those issues – or many others in our history – would have been resolved without compromise in the face of sometimes overwhelming conflict. Individuals from all walks of life bring different perspectives and quite often fundamentally disagree on answers to the problems our state and nation face. The key is working through those differences to find common ground. Research, critical thinking, debate and compromise are sometimes needed to find common ground with which we can all choose to be happy. Learning these valuable skills will put students on a path to success no matter their chosen discipline or profession. Students who participate in Tennessee History Day are learning valuable lessons about how to interact with people who may not always agree with them. It is a critical soft skill that too many people lack in our present day. What is being learned from the Tennessee History Day experience will reach far beyond this state competition and the national competition this summer. It will help inform civil discourse for the next generation. We also hope students who are civically engaged now will continue to be so as adults. That means learning about issues and participating in the electoral process throughout their lives. The students who get the best scores in today’s competition will be eligible to participate in National History Day, which will be held June 10 through June 14 in College Park, Maryland. It will be a great experience for those students, and I’m sure that they will represent Tennessee well. I believe that all the students here today have gained something valuable that they may carry with them throughout their lives. I want to congratulate them – and their parents, teachers and others who support them – for taking part in this vital program. Sincerely, Tre Hargett Tennessee Secretary of State For information about the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office, please visit sos.tn.gov.

Dear National History Day students: As head of the History Department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, I am delighted to send this note of congratulations to all the young historians competing in Nashville. For many years, I have watched the regional competition in Knoxville, and know how exciting it is to share your research with teachers, friends, and judges. No matter the outcome of this next round of competition, you have accomplished something special. History Day competition has shown you an important lesson about studying history—that it’s not just memorizing names and dates, but it is a way of thinking, of learning how to ask vital questions, find some answers, and share what you have found with others. As you prepared for the competition you saw that the past is a complicated and fascinating place, and that learning about it is one of the best ways to understand the world we live in today. You have shown real skill and creativity in your research, so I urge you to consider majoring in history when you go to college. Our society needs more citizens who understand the history of our finest moments and our greatest challenges, and every profession demands graduates who have the skills in research, writing and analysis that you will learn in history classes. If you are thinking about studying history at the University of Tennessee, we welcome that. We have an award-winning faculty that offers exciting classes on a wide range of topics, and gives students the tools to do their own research. If you come to Knoxville for a campus visit, be sure to let us know so we can meet you, answer your questions about studying history at UT, and hear about your National History Day project. On behalf of all the historians at UT, I wish you the best of luck in the competition.
