PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The Associate Council met April

7-10, 2016 at Hamilton Crowne

Plaza in Washington D.C.

Tennessee came home with a

record breaking 40 awards. We

are in Category 5 with the

following membership: Texas

834, Florida 487, Tennessee 418,

Georgia 353, Virginia 312, Ohio

289.

This is tough Competition but

we received more awards than

Texas which has twice the membership. These statistics are as of

December 31, 2015. Presently Tennessee has 424 members.

It is not that we are after awards or accolades for what the

chapters participate in, but National recognizes we are striving to

maintain the goals of the Society.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! to each of our members for reporting

what your chapter participated in and to our State Chairmen for

getting the final reports to National.

This officer continues to meet with each individual chapter which

gives her the opportunity to meet each member.

It was a pleasure to meet with the Volunteer-Wauhatchie Chapter

at Fall Creek Falls State Park. It is little wonder that Southern

Living magazine readers voted Fall Creek Falls the best state park

in the Southeastern United States. Not only does the park offer

scenic and spectacular outdoor recreation but a wonderful Inn and Conference Center with

delicious food. Elizabeth Robnett, Bledsoe County historian, spoke of the 75-80 soldiers from

Bledsoe County who served during the War 1812. It was an interesting afternoon to hear of

many of the folklore stories from Ranger Stewart who slipped into the meeting to hear

Elizabeth’s speech. Ranger pointed out that a nearby cave had ties to the War of 1812 since

they made gunpowder there to be used in the War.

It is so interesting to meet with Chapters as they choose to meet in historical places. The visit to

the Upper Cumberland Chapter meeting was held in the preserved Buffalo Valley Schoolhouse

built in 1929. The hostess served an array of southern food. Felicia Hix, State Chairman

Historic Landmarks, shared information about her committee as the program speaker.

What a fun day the Andrew Jackson Foundation ll6th Annual Spring Outing was as they

honored the legacy of our seventh President of the United States and proudly preserves

Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage.

It was an honor to give greetings and our donation toward the Jackson-Madison County

Veterans Memorial Gazebo and Freedom Plaza in Jackson to honor the role of women in service

to America. Benefactors will be recognized on a permanent granite entrance marker to be

completed by November. Notification will be forth coming of the dedication date and time.

Flag Day Ceremony at the City Cemetery in Nashville always is a pleasure to hear speakers

share information about our different flags. We think we have heard everything there is to hear

about the Battle of Baltimore and Francis Scott Key, but there is always a tidbit of information

you may not be aware of during the War of 1812. The ceremony is always held at the grave site

of William Driver, who gave our flag the name “Old Glory”.

Our State Summer Board Meeting is fast approaching—Friday August 12 at noon at the Double

Tree in Murfreesboro. The Call Letter provides all the information to register. Colonial Dames

CDXIIC will meet in the morning and we will join them for lunch.

Following the Lunch, members will have the opportunity to hear State Chairman of Historic

Landmarks, Felicia Hix share information while the Executive Board meets and then all

members will gather for the General Assembly. It will be an informative day and this officer

hopes you will plan to attend.

REMINDER: The President National, Lynn Schulman, will be visiting Tennessee for the 107th

State Council Meeting on March 3, 2017.

Report of U.S.D. Associate Council April 7-10, 2016

Submitted by Teresa Deathridge

Here are some highlights of the Associate Council 2016. 120 of 127 registered attended.

Jean Mulford, chairman of Ft. McHenry Committee has a DVD to share for possible chapter

programs.

A Charter Member pin was approved. I know we have chapter members who may be interested

in buying one of these.

Campbell’s Soup Label program is discontinuing, so it is encouraged to send what you have to

Crossnore School in NC before June 2016!

Members 90 years of age by October, having been a member for five years, are exempt

of paying dues.

Ann Farley was elected Treasurer National.

I had the honor to present a Companion Pocket Bible to the organization. This will be

stored/displayed in the 1812 Museum.

We had very interesting programs! Friday night David O. Stewart, author of “Madison’s Gift:

Five Partnerships that Built America” brought interesting program on James Madison.

Friday’s lunch speaker was my favorite program of the Conference! Rear Admiral Donna L.

Crisp, U.S. Navy, Retired gave an informative talk and slide show entitled “Fulfilling our

Nation’s Promise, an Update on Defense POW/MIA Accounting.” This work is the continuing

effort of identifying missing veterans of ALL wars. She displayed a plaster skull cast of the one

sailor positively identified from the Hunley Submarine lost during the War Between the States.

Relics and artifacts of the other sailors were found, but this sailor’s remains were returned to his

family after being identified. There is an indention in the jaw where he had always chomped on

a pipe. (Photo will follow) She exclaimed during the Korean War bodies were soaked with

formaldehyde as an effort to preserve the bodies. But, this destroyed DNA. In recent years a

method called Demineralization has been developed, thus more of our Korean Veterans are

being identified today. She shared the gratitude for her work came when she knows these

veterans will be returned to their families. Needless to say, a lot of us in the room cried during

this program. Saturday night’s speaker was a professor at Georgetown University whose brief

remarks were on the value of sharing history.

This was my first trip to Washington DC and Associate Council. I enjoyed my time there, but

regret I did not have a lot of time for sightseeing. I toured Arlington Cemetery and had a brief

walking tour of the sights at the National Mall. I missed attending the Memorial Service and

Tea at the 1812 House/Headquarters. I have a list of things for the “next time” I make the

journey!
