HEALTH OFFICER ORDERS CANCELLATION OF CLAM DIGGING IN PACIFIC COUNTY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
{South Bend, WA March 19, 2020} On Thursday, March 19, 2020, the Pacific County Deputy Health Officer (“Deputy Health Officer”), Dr. Steven Krager, ordered that all clam digs in Pacific County, Washington be cancelled until further no-tice in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 The prohibition on clam digging in Pacific County is in effect as of 12:01 AM on March 20, 2020 per the Health Officer’s Order and remains in effect until further notice. The Deputy Health Officer has determined that this step is now necessary in Pacific County in light of the increasing scope and severity of the threat that COVID-19 poses. Although no cases are confirmed in Pacific County at this time, the increasing instances of community spread in Washington State have influenced the decision. Summary of the Deputy Health Officer’s Order The Deputy Health Officer issued an Order prohibiting clam digging in Pacific County to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 due to: (a) the increased likelihood that gatherings will attract people from a broad geographic area; (b) the prolonged time period in which large numbers of people are in close proximity; (c) the difficulty in tracing exposure when large numbers of people attend a single event; (d) the inability to ensure that attendees follow adequate hygienic and social distancing prac-tices; and (e) the potential impact on community resources including food, pharmaceutical supplies, and healthcare re-sources. For the purposes of the Order, “COVID-19 risk mitigation measures” include all of the following: (a) The space in which a permissible gathering is held must accommodate social distancing by allowing all attendees to stand or sit at least six feet from any other attendee; and Proper hand hygiene and sanitation material must be readily available to all persons at all times, including soap and water, tissues, and waste receptacles (if soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizer may be used). Pacific County Recommendations This Order does not ban access to public beaches. However, as a reminder, Pacific County recommends that people at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19 stay home as much as possible. This includes individuals over age 60, and/or those with serious, chronic medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, or those who have weakened im-mune systems, etc.). Anyone who has questions about whether their condition puts them at risk for COVID-19 should contact their primary healthcare provider or an appropriate medical practitioner. Pacific County also recommends everyone take steps to keep themselves and others healthy, including: Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover coughs and sneezes. Use a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. Stay home and away from others when sick. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched. Pacific County will continue to update the public with information pertinent to COVID-19 as soon as it is available. SURFSIDE GOLF SCRAMBLE
Due to the current climate surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, our annual "Surfside Scramble" golf tournament has been put on hold. Many of our loyal do-nors and sponsors have had to close the doors of their businesses, and most of our participants and volunteers are in the group at the highest risk for consequences of contracting the virus.
At this time we do not know if we will try to reschedule for later, or cancel for this year. The best I can say is "stay tuned", and we will try to keep you informed.

COVID-19 and Razor Clam Digging
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recognizes that we are facing extraordinary times and urges all Washington citizens to take extra precautions to keep yourself, your family and the entire community of Washington healthy. Razor clam digs typically bring visitors from throughout Washington. We recognize that travel at this time should be done with great deliberation for your health, and the health of the receiving community. In the course of considering this dig, we consulted with county health officials in both Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties. We also consulted with the Washington Department of Health and the Governor’s office to determine if this clam opener should proceed. Based on the determinations of local and state government, we will continue to offer this out-door activity.
In offering this activity, we ask that you to follow WDOH guidelines. In particular:
Do not travel if you are sick, someone in your household is sick or you have conditions that put you at higher risk.
Symptoms or not, please also practice good personal hygiene and maintain “social distancing” of at least six feet while on the beach.
In addition, please recognize that these small towns need the grocery stores to remain stocked for local residents. So please be judicious in purchasing what is needed for your time at the beach. Restaurants and bars are closed at this time, so please make sure you have brought the provisions you will need to enjoy your day.
Please visit WDFW COVID-19 Updates for more information.

Deputy Patrol Service Update
The relationship between Surfside and the Sheriff's office goes back about 30 years according to members who have been in the community much longer than me. Our current contract originated in 2005. The Sheriff, upon being elected, took the opportunity to put a new set of eyes on that contract. He had some questions for which he researched answers. Obviously, conditions could have changed since 2005.
Representatives from the Sheriff's office and Surfside met to discuss what implications may have resulted from the Sheriff's inquiries. It would be quite imprudent of me to disclose information regarding ongoing negotiations that could result in an updated contract. The citizens of Surfside have expressed an interest in continuing to pay for additional police presence in the Surfside community, which the Board is pursuing.
This kind of relationship is fairly common among law enforcement agencies. I am certain that, if a new agreement is negotiated, the parameters will be made public. Sheriff Souvenir is very interested in keeping the community informed, and Surfside will want to keep the members up to date at the conclusion of any negotiations. I would hope that newspaper reporting on this topic does not get ahead of actual conditions.
Please keep watching for updates as they become available.
Thank you,
Scott Winegar, President, Surfside Board of Trustees

Community Relations Committee
This wonderfully fun committee is seeking new members. You would
help in the planning of all social events in Surfside, collaborate on ideas
and activities. It’s a great way to meet other Surfside members as well as
enjoying our amazing community. Events range from chili cook-offs to
Bunco, Sip N Paint to ceramics classes, potlucks to Jam Sessions. The
committee also plans the Golf Tournament, which provides scholarships
for the local seniors and provide Christmas wishes for the local foster
children.
This is a great group of people, so come on down and join the fun.
Helpful Security Ideas
Heavy Duty Security Hasp
With the rash of shed break-ins we have had recently, this is a great security idea shared by one of our members.
This heavy duty, metal , tamper proof security hasp will prevent the use of bolt cutters on your garage or shed
door locks.
They are inexpensive and easy to use.
If you have security ideas you would like to share just let us know!
