OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE PLAYPOD
Yesterday an official opening of our new PlayPod was held. This presented an opportunity to thank the Buninyong Community Bank, who generously donated the money needed to purchase the shipping container. The grade 1s and 2s came along and once the formalities were over and the ribbon was cut, they were given the opportunity to play with the PlayPod materials. They had a ball and beautifully demonstrated to all in attendance what an asset the PlayPod is going to be for many years to come. Members of the Grade 6 PlayPod Team were also in attendance. These students are rostered on each day to help the yard duty teacher open up the PlayPod, keep an eye on the kids playing and then pack up.
From now on, the PlayPod will be open during lunch breaks and available to grade 1-6s on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The preps will have the PlayPod to themselves on Wednesdays.
The PlayPod provides students with an opportunity to let their imagination run wild and play with the items in creative ways. This is all part of the school’s quest to cater for all students at break times, not just those who want to run about and play sport. The PlayPod beautifully compliments the introduction of lunch time clubs, a chicken coop, student led activities and access to the library, each catering for different interests.
The school is most appreciative of the Buninyong Community Bank, who fully funded the project. The school has now benefitted from the generosity of the bank on multiple occasions. We are also grateful to the many parents who donated the play items that are stored in the PlayPod.

CANTEEN
Canteen is closed next week. It will Re-open for the first week of Term 2.
Student Wellbeing Update! Below are some key updates from our student wellbeing team around supporting positive behaviour and information around the Be Positive (B+) program.
Be Positive Theme Update:
Gratitude (Weeks 8 & 9)
This week is the first week of our ‘Gratitude’ theme. As we go about the week, students will learn about how resilience can be built through being grateful.
As a parent, talking to your child about the people, places or things that they are thankful for can help your child to focus on the positive and build their resilience greatly.
B+ Learning intention for the
fortnight:
To understand that through
showing gratitude regularly we
can improve our resilience and
emotional wellbeing.
Epilepsy Awareness Day - Monday the 26th of March
Next Monday is Epilepsy Awareness Day. Purple Day (26th March) is a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness. Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone. She named the day Purple Day after the internationally recognised flower and colour lavender.
At Buninyong, we also have children affected by epilepsy and wish to support them by continuing awareness and to talk more openly about how it can impact others. As such, we are encouraging students and teachers to wear something purple on this day. It could be a ribbon, hat, t-shirt or even socks. Nothing new, just something that you may have around the house. Students do not need to bring a donation on this day, however, if you would like to donate to Epilepsy Action Australia, you can visit https://www.epilepsy.org.au/donation/make-a-donation/
We look forward to seeing some purple splashed throughout the school and students talking about epilepsy.
Expectation focus of the week:
Well done to everyone for being so kind and compassionate in the yard! We will continue this focus for another week!
Grade 6 - GRIP Student Leadership Conference
Last Wednesday a group of our grade six students headed off to Melbourne (with an early departure) to participate in the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Exhibition and Conference Centre.
During the day, the students took part in a range of activities and sessions to learn about the transforming role of a leader. They also did an amazing job of working with other schools to identify correct ways to respond as a leader and to consider what changes they can make as a school leader to improve our school.
We were proud of their efforts on the day and the way in which they conducted themselves whilst heading to and in Melbourne. Now it’s time to look forward to hearing what they have to say in respect to continual school improvement and we can’t wait to keep working with them on their leadership journeys.

National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying
Last Friday was the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Whilst we already focus on bullying in our teaching each term, this is another opportunity to be openly talking about it and raising further awareness. As part of the day, our wonderful ‘Be Positive’ student leaders went around the school to talk about bullying and to ask each class to make a pledge against bullying. Thanks to everyone involved!
We appreciate the support that you have shown in shining a light on violence and bullying.
Karaoke in the Courtyard
Karaoke in the Courtyard is back! It will be on at lunchtime on the last day of term, Thursday the 29
th of March. A sign-up sheet is on the wall next to the
door into the office. Please write your name and the name of the song you will be singing. Please remember to choose a song that is appropriate for being performed at school. You are allowed to sing by yourself, in pairs or with a small group of friends. So there is enough time for everyone to sing, only 8 songs will be able to be performed. But don’t worry if you miss out, you can always have a turn next term!
We ask that only students in Grades 2-6 sign up for karaoke, but all students are welcome to come along at lunchtime to watch, cheer and support their friends.
Buninyong Chess Team
Last Friday, the Buninyong chess team competed in the inter-school chess tournament at Clarendon college. After 7 rounds against some amazing chess players from schools all around the Ballarat region, the Buninyong team won first place by half a point beating the Clarendon A team.
Well done to Matilda, James, Ned, Andrew and Dan for representing the school and coming home with gold medals and a trophy!
Dan also received a silver medal for individual ranking against all the students who participated.
Well Done!
Gratitude Empathy
Compassion
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ― Melody Beattie

SCOTSBURN NEWS School Shoes We have had a couple of students wearing shoes that have a rolling wheel on the bottom. We make exceptions to the uniform policy for shoes to ensure that students are comfortable with their footwear. However, we also must ensure that students are safe. As such, these shoes with rolling wheels on the bottom are no longer appropriate for school. Thanks for your understanding.

Term 1 - Important Dates & Extra-Curricular Events
21st Mar - Teddy Bears Picnic
29th Mar - Term 1 Finishes
Tuesday 27th March On Tuesday 27th March, the Scotsburn staff have their planning day in preparation for term 2. All Scotsburn students will start and finish the day at the Buninyong campus. Scotsburn staff will be in the courtyard to meet students as they arrive in the morn-ing, spend some time in the library with them and then escort them to their classrooms for the day. They will spend the day with the Grade 3 staff and students.
Good Luck Athletes We would like to wish Lily, Scarlett, Axel, Quinn, Freya, Amelia P and Pat well for the District Athletics Competition on Tuesday. They all competed extremely well at the recent school sports to give themselves this opportunity. Good luck.
Teddy Bears Picnic This Wednesday, the annual Teddy Bears Picnic will take place at Scotsburn. The Preps from the Buninyong campus will be visiting to do some fun activities with our Prep/1’s. It’s sure to be lots of fun!
Last Day of Term 1 The Scotsburn students will start the day at Buninyong on the last day of this term (Thursday). The students will attend the assembly, library and Play Pod. After play they will all make their way back to Scotsburn on the bus.
Grade 4 Camp On Wednesday the Scotsburn Grade 4 students went on camp to Anglesea with some of the Buninyong Grade 4s. We did 4 activities – Sand castle building, the giant swing (18 metres high!), outdoor shelter building and mountain bike riding. The students had a wonderful time.
My favourite activity was the giant swing because I felt really proud of myself after doing it. I didn’t know if I could go all the way up but I did. By Indi.
My favourite activity was the outdoor shelter / cubby hut building because we worked as a team and never gave up. We kept on trying, even when we couldn’t find more branches of leaves to use on our walls. By Arlen.
GRIP Leadership Conference On Wednesday, Pat, Hugo and us girls attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Melbourne. We learnt that great ideas can be simple and that even simple ideas can help our community and the world. We also learnt that we should aim to be a strawberry leader and not a watermelon leader, because a strawberry is the same on the inside and the outside, whereas a watermelon is different on the outside to the inside, so the message is to always be true to yourself. It was a great day, especially sharing ideas with students from other schools.
