Grade 5/6 Term 1 Overview 2017 LITERACY The senior students will be given the opportunity to create a Writer’s Notebook and explore their own writing style and preferences. This term the Grade 5 students will focus on the development of narrative texts and will work on their grammar, punctuation and spelling. We will also look at persuasive texts and the students will be supported to write a variety of both text types. The Grade 6 students will be exploring Explanation texts. They will look at the structure of an explanation text and will work to writing their own explanation texts. The students will also continue to focus on their grammar, punctuation and spelling through their writing pieces. PERFORMING ARTS This term in Performing Arts the children will use their imagination and creativity to explore the elements of music using voice, movement and instruments. They will develop compositions and choreography to express and communicate ideas and intentions to an audience. They will devise their own drama performances by exploring character and improvisation. MATHS This year we are introducing the Digital Curriculum as a component of our learning in Mathematics. The students will be focussing on ‘Coding’ and will be given the opportunity to explore different forms of digital technologies. The students will also continue to engage with the Mathematical concepts of Number, Measurement and Statistics and Probability. Students will be supported to extend their understanding and build upon their skills. The Grade 5 students will begin to prepare for the NAPLAN Numeracy testing that will happen in early Term 2. P.E. In Phys Ed the 5/6 classes are learning the skills of the interschool sports in which they are competing – cricket, basketball, tennis and soccer. RecWest will provide four weeks of basketball clinics. The last four weeks of the term will be soccer clinics with Sport Education Development Australia (SEDA). ITALIAN This term in Italian we will be revising how to greet each other and ask more complex questions in everyday conversations. We will complete a poster describing ourselves and presenting these to the class. As St Valentine was an Italian saint, we will be learning about the history of Valentine’s Day and will complete some fun activities in Italian. As part of our Easter unit, we will be looking at how Easter is celebrated in Italy. RELIGION Our big question is, ‘What role do we play in Creation’? The students will revisit their understanding of the Creation Story and compare it to other creation stories from different cultures. They will explore the belief that we are created in the image of God and that we have the responsibility to respect ourselves and the dignity of others. We will define the term stewardship and what that means for us in the way we choose to interact with the environment and all living things. ART This term will be connecting with the students’ Inquiry topic. They will be inspired by the works of local artist Geoffery Ricardo, who is working on a community project to design and construct sculptures that will be installed along sections of Kororoit Creek heading towards Hobsons Bay. Grade 5 students will have the opportunity to visit Ricardo’s studio, meet him personally, view his work and ask him questions. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING As preparation for a wonderful year filled with excellent team work the students will begin the year with the CASEA program. The students will progress through a series of eight lessons that help to develop social skills and teach the students ways in which to manage a variety of stressful situations. This program will be explicitly linked to the SEL (Social Emotional Learning) competencies that provide a foundation for all interaction and learning that happens in the senior end of the school. The students will participate in several incursions and will attend a marine excursion at Williamstown. This unit will connect to our understanding of stewardship and the responsibility we have in caring for our environment.
