(Measure: ⁰N / ⁰S) Longitude: Lines
east/west of Greenwich Meridian.
(Measure: ⁰E / ⁰W)
Co-ordinates: Points showing Latitude and Longitude.
Latitude shows distances north or south of the
Equator (sides of map).
Longitude shows distances east or west of the
Greenwich Meridian. (top or bottom of a map).
Hemisphere: Half of sphere (ball).
Next to equator – Northern and

Next to Greenwich Meridian -
Western and Eastern Hemisphere.
Place a strip of paper at both points you want
to measure. Make a mark at these points.
Place the paper strip next to the line scale on
the map, with the first mark at 0 km. Where
the other mark is, is the actual distance.
Current events: Something that recently happened,

finding new medicine.
Global: Around the world.
Statistics: Facts measured in numbers.
Highest and Lowest, Length, Largest, Most, etc.

population also changes.

There are imaginary lines on maps and globes.
Help to see where places are in the world.
Two important lines: Equator (divides earth into north and south) and
Greenwich Meridian (divides earth into east and west).
Lines that show a place between the Equator and the North- or South
Pole are called lines of latitude.
This position is measured in degrees north or south.
Lines of longitude go around the earth from the North Pole to the
South Pole, east or west from the Greenwich Meridian.
This position is measured in degrees east or west.
Because earth is round, you can’t see all the sides at the same time.
![Page 6: Term 1 : Map Skills. Unit 2: Hemispheres.Unit 2 ... · Latitude and longitude lines are grid references that give an exact point and not just a square. Unit 2: Hemispheres. ((((PPPP.... 7777----9999))))
New words:
Hemisphere Half of a sphere.
(round shape)
“Hemi” means half.
“Sphere” is a round shape (ball).
A Hemisphere is therefore half of a sphere.
If Earth is divided along the Equator in two halves- half is Northern
Hemisphere and half is Southern Hemisphere.
If Earth is divided at the Greenwich Meridian at 180⁰ longitude line- half is
Western Hemisphere and half is Eastern Hemisphere.
Every place on earth is in two Hemispheres at the same time.
South Africa, for example,
is in the Southern Hemisphere (south of the Equator)
and in the Eastern Hemisphere (east of the Greenwich Meridian)

How to read degrees on a map.
(Degrees from a globe to a flat map.)
Lines of latitude - read how far a place is to north or south of the Equator.
Marked - sides of the map.
Lines of longitude - read how far a place is to east or west of the Greenwich
Meridian.
Marked - top or bottom of the map.
Refer to P.11 in the handbook for a map of the world.
Latitude and longitude lines are grid references that give an exact point and
not just a square.

A river’s length depends on the starting point.
Population depends on where the edge of a city is, amounts also change.
All oceans form one world ocean. They have different names at different
points, where one ends and the next begins, can be questioned.
