Principal’s Message
XIN NIAN KUAI LE
Happy Chinese New Year Meet the Teacher Nights Thank you to the many parents who attended these information evenings. The feed-
back from parents was that the information was very useful and the opportunity to
meet their child’s teacher was appreciated. Thank you to all the teachers for their
preparation and time on these evenings.
It’s not OK to be late or away from school
When students miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them
to catch up on missed work (which some never do), they often miss important interac-
tions with their peers which can compound issues of social isolation and low self-
esteem. It takes strong parenting to ensure children are at school daily and on time. Of
course there will be times such as illness or genuine extenuating family circumstances,
when students should be away. These need to be a rarity rather than the norm.
Students are not exempt from attending school during the term.
Learning Support
Throughout 2018 learning support in K-6 will continue to be overseen by the Learning
Support Team (LST). This team is the key to ensuring that all students’ learning needs
are addressed. The Learning Support Team is chaired by Mrs Anthonizs, LaST, and con-
sists of the Principal, the School Counsellor, PBEL coordinator and class teachers. At
the weekly Learning Support Team meeting, students’ learning needs are discussed per
class teachers’ referrals. Referrals are prioritised, and if support is deemed appropri-
ate, it may be provided in a variety of ways. The methods we use to cater to student
learning needs at Wideview Public School include:
consultation between parents and teachers to make adjustments and accommoda-
tions to programs
Counsellor assessment
support staff and classroom teachers team-teaching
withdrawal by support staff for the implementation of intensive Literacy and
Numeracy programs
implementation of transition programs from Preschool to Kindergarten and
from Year 6 to high school
regular reviews of students’ progress regular reviews of students’ behaviour.

Coles for Schools
Coles Sports for Schools is back to help Aussie kids stay fit and healthy. When you shop at Coles, you’ll re-
ceive Sports for Schools vouchers that the school can exchange for sports gear. The more vouchers we can
collect the more sports gear we can receive. There is a box in the foyer which will be emptied and counted
by Sarah Palmer and her committee each week. There is also a school collection box outside Coles at
Berowra.
Thank you Parents and Community
P&C Contributions in 2017 funded a new and exciting literacy program for Wideview Students. Thank you
to all parents who made a contribution to P&C through attending fund raising activities and/or contrib-
uting to the voluntary fund. The school has been able to purchase the training and resources to imple-
ment the Multilit and Minilit programs.
The reasoning behind implementing this program is MULTILIT was developed by researchers at the Mac-
quarie University Special Education Centre. The program can be adopted by parents after some initial
training and it provide considerable gains in reading proficiency.
However gains in reading are only one part of the equation. Research has shown that for many children,
participation in the program and the improvements they made had led to increased levels of confidence,
greater enjoyment in reading, improved attitudes to school and schoolwork, and a broadening of their
world.
The main areas in which improvements were seen were in the decoding of texts and confidence in read-
ing. Improvements were also observed in fluency, comprehension, reading levels and attitudes towards
school.
We are very excited to be introducing this program to our students and very thankful for the $6000 P&C
donated to the school to make this happen.
