TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents,
STEM @ Pilgrim I suspect you have heard about one of the newer ‘names’ around in education, which is STEM. This acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. It is not a subject or a course, but they are areas of study which are part of our teaching and learning programs.
Special areas require a focus, so we are creating a STEM Space in the refurbished Computer/Year 2 room. This space is multi-purpose and will also be used by Learning Support and our Junior Primary classes.
Each Wednesday, Mr David Jenkin has been planning and now setting up this new space, with resources both natural and purchased. New furniture will be ordered and students will soon find things to investigate in this space.
Our Campus Library is already operating a Maker Space and this is open every Tuesday. Our plans for the Library are also based around a special STEM area as well. Mrs Hajnalka Molloy is doing a wonderful job of providing an exciting environment for our Campus students.
How can you be involved?
If you have an interest in these areas, especially in the T=Technology and E=Engineering areas, connections with outside groups, specialist expertise, please email Mr Jenkin on [email protected] .
Here are a few photos of our ‘work in progress’
Yours in His Service Nigel Bennett. Principal

Student Free Days
Friday 8th June is a Student Free Day.
Teachers will be writing Semester One student reports. Please book your child into OSHC early on 8270 6178 to help them prepare and have the right number of staff onsite.
Monday 11th June is the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday
Musical Ticket Purchasing
Tickets for this year’s musical will be available online (www.trybooking.com/WDRJ) from 6pm Thursday 7th June. For the first time, we have allocated seats for the audience this year. This will avoid the need to queue before performances in the cold weather. Please get online early to avoid disappointment!
When booking online, please do not leave spaces as we are expecting performances to be full.
Reception and Year 1 students will have the opportunity to view the musical at the dress rehearsal performance. If younger students, not in the musical, are to attend an evening performance, then a seat will need to be purchased (a child’s ticket).
The flyer page 4 has more details about times and cost of tickets.
Winter Uniform
The change to winter uniform was on Friday 1st June with the change of season. Wearing of the winter uniform is compulsory and continues through July and August. Further information is in the student diaries.
Hats and SunSmart School
Hats will be worn by students during Terms 1, 3 and 4 in line with the SunSmart policy.
For Term 2 structures are in place by using the SunSmart widget or phone app. Teachers will check the SunSmart widget just before the recess and lunch bell
and if the UV reading is above 3, the children will be instructed to wear their hats in the yard. In June and July it is very rare that hats are required.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Welcome to the Premier's Reading Challenge for 2018. Classes have been supplied with a set of Student Record Sheets to begin the Challenge. We have until 7th September to conclude reading. Each year the enthusiasm mounts to see who will set the new Pilgrim School individual reading record so please remember to bring your finished sheet to your class teacher who will note your record attempt and give you a new sheet.
This year we want to set a new whole school record and aim to get at least 150 students to finish the Challenge. If every student takes part, we go in the running for a very special school prize from the Premier!
Parents, please remember the ongoing research that continues to demonstrate that reading 3-6 times a week with your child enhances their literacy and numeracy skills significantly, as well as being a great bonding experience and some down time in a busy schedule.
Check out the website: www.prc.sa.edu.au for booklists, top 10 recommended reads and other useful information.

Scholastic Book Club
Brochures for Issue 4 have gone home. Parents can either return the order to school with payment by cash, or card details filled out on the form, or ordering can be done by parents online.
Final date for Issue 4 orders is Monday 18th June 2018.
Rachael Gomez is doing a great job processing orders that are returned to the front office and distributing the books.
The school earns rewards from the Book Club that go directly toward curriculum resources and readers. Thank you to parents who purchase Scholastic Bookclub items and together with the help of Parents and Friends, the school was recently able to purchase 5 Short Reads Fiction Boxes. In total $1265.50 has been spent on resources using Scholastic School Rewards in the past year.
School Banking
Our students really enjoy participating in
the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program. A group of parents bank the money and distribute School Banking rewards on a Wednesday morning, using the staff room. Don’t forget school banking day is Wednesday!
Campus Instrumental Music Night
Last Thursday evening we celebrated Campus Instrumental Music Night. The evening was a great success, with a full house providing a very supportive audience to our talented instrumental students and their wonderful teachers. Our sincere congratulations to everyone who participated, and our thanks to the parents, students and staff who made the evening possible. Mayor Visit to Year 4
Recently the Mayor of the City of Onkaparinga, Lorraine Rosenberg visited the Year 4 class.
This was an opportunity for students to learn about the local council and also Mayor Rosenberg's role.
The Year 4 students are currently looking at local government (council) in their iUnit and were very excited for her visit and enjoyed asking her lots of great questions.
