Welcome to CPS Kindergarten 2016

A very settled, well-behaved and confident group of Kindergarten students were warmly welcomed into the Crookwell Public School community this week. This very happy band of students had lots of fun learning, making friends and exploring the classroom and playground.

Kindergarten students, with class teacher Miss Logan and

School Learning Support Officer Mrs Gay, ready for a class photograph on their first day of school.

School Photograph Day – Tuesday 1st March On Tuesday 1st March The School Photographer will visit the school to take class, individual and sibling photographs. Please ensure your child comes to school on that day looking clean, neat and tidy wearing full Crookwell Public School summer uniform. Remember jewellery is not permitted and girls can wear only red hair accessories.

The School Photographer envelopes, attached to the newsletter, need to be carefully studied so that the instructions are adhered to exactly and the most appropriate photograph package is selected.

Kindergarten’s First Week It has been a delightful first week for our new Kindergarten students. We have taken every opportunity to settle in to our new school, meet new friends and explore all the great things that Crookwell Public School has to offer. In the classroom we are learning to read, write, discuss, count, dance and sing. We have decorated our classroom - and it looks great! Outside of the classroom we toured the school and learnt about places such as the library, canteen, computer room, office and all the different playgrounds. We know so much about school already.

Lincoln Kearney and Louise Robertson

create a flower display for our classroom.

Sonny Woods has a great view at the top

of the spider web.

Jonah Allwright counts his procession of vehicles.

Ben Webster is a whiz on the computer.

Bodi Waters, George Willis and Haka Hape

watch as the ball bounces high.

Lily Hattam discovers the Lego in Kindergarten.

Mia Butler enjoys time to interact with the Lego people.

Kade Fowler makes it to the top of the rock wall.

Sun Safe at the Pool In an effort to ensure all students leave the pool next Monday afternoon without having suffered sun damage to their skin strict sun-safe procedures are going to be enforced.

Students will need sunscreen to apply during the regular sun-screen breaks that have been incorporated into the day’s program, a broad brimmed hat (as many students will be in house colours, the hat does not necessarily have to be a school hat), a rash shirt or T-shirt that can be worn all day except when competing in swimming race events.

And

The Crookwell Public School Swimming Readiness Survey (attached) must be completed for ALL students before they will be permitted to participate in any swimming event. Crookwell Public School Water Carnival Tuesday 9th February is the Crookwell Public School Water Carnival and BBQ for Years 3 – 6. Students are to come to school at the normal time and may arrive wearing their house colours if they wish (Waratah – Red, Bluegum – Blue, Wattle – Yellow). Students will assemble at school before walking with their teachers to the pool in their house groups at approximately 11.30am.

Students participating in the competitive races will complete their heats before the water carnival commences, walking to the pool at 9.30am.

Parents to help with timing, marshalling and the BBQ would be greatly appreciated on the day of the carnival.

Students will need sunscreen, a bottle of water, a hat, swimmers and dry clothes to wear home once the carnival has concluded. Students should bring their recess to the pool. A BBQ will be available selling double sausage sandwiches for $3, single sausage sandwiches for $2 and poppers for $1 at lunchtime. Students pay on the day, no pre-ordering is necessary. Students should bring their own lunch if they do not wish to purchase from the BBQ.

Students will need $3.00 or their season ticket to enter the pool. Students will return to school by 3:15pm in time for regular buses and pick up. If your child cannot participate for a particular reason please send a note to exempt them. Activities are designed for all swimming abilities including non – swimmers. Published Weekly The school newsletter called, ‘News & Views’ is the method the school communicates with its families. The newsletter can be accessed through the Crookwell Public School webpage ([email protected]) or via the Crookwell Public School app which can be downloaded freely to your smartphone (username is community and the password is crookwellps) or receive a hard copy of the newsletter which is sent home with the youngest child of the family attending school on the last day of each school week.

Many families have the newsletter emailed rather than receive a hard copy. This method of communication is preferred by the school as it is more economical in terms of time and resources, and is a more reliable method by which to convey information about school happenings to a student’s family.

If you would prefer to have the newsletter emailed please return the slip below so we can add you to our list. Otherwise please check your child’s bag on the last day of each school week in order to keep up-to-date with school happenings.

Thank you, Greg Atfield

2016 VOLUNTARY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION What is A Voluntary School Contribution? The vast majority of public schools request a contribution from parents each year to supplement existing funding. These contributions allow schools to provide additional resources and learning programs for our students. What Will The Money Be Used For? The money will be used to purchase resources to support teaching/learning programs for each student across the school. How Much? The suggested contribution is $50 per child. Please note that this roughly equates to $1 per child per week. I cannot stress enough the difference to our school finances that your contribution will make. The contribution fees are within the guidelines as set out by the Department of Education. How To Pay Please place your contribution, with the slip below, in an envelope and return it to the school office as soon as you are able. If you prefer, you may choose to pay a contribution in instalments. A receipt will be issued for all monies received.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -

School Banking Helpers Needed School banking is a well-established service within the school, with many students doing their weekly banking through the Commonwealth Bank at school each Friday. We are very grateful to Michelle Barney and Rowena Watson who have been providing this valuable service over the years since its inception.

However, due to work commitments, neither Michelle or Rowena are able to continue in this role. We are seeking one, possibly two, volunteers who can give 1 to 2 hours a week to help with school banking. Besides helping students become financially literate school banking also earns commission for the school.

If you think you may be interested in taking on this role please contact Mr Atfield by phoning 48321213 so that he can arrange a time for you to meet with Rowena and Michelle to learn the role.

Thank you in anticipation

Changes in the Uniform Shop The school uniform shop provides a very valuable service to the school as well as being an important source of P&C (school) funds .For many years Haley Snape, Rowena Watson, Kathy Rowe and a band of helpers have dedicated their time to ensure the shop operates smoothly, efficiently and profitably. On behalf of the Crookwell Public School community I would like to thank these committed ladies for the wonderful job they have done in the uniform shop.

However, like the school banking volunteers, the team of volunteers who work to conduct the uniform shop cannot continue in the role past the P&C AGM on Tuesday 8th March due to additional work commitments.

It would be devastating to see this fabulous service disappear. A team of 2 to 3 people is needed to allow the uniform shop to continue. Please consider, with the assistance of a couple of diligent and committed friends, taking on this role. The position becomes available at the AGM but in the meantime Haley, Rowena or Kathy would be happy to speak to you about what the role entails. Thank you for giving serious consideration to filling this role which soon will become vacant. Yours in Public Education,

Greg Atfield

Swimming lessons and swimming carnivals

As the new school year has begun and swimming carnivals or swimming lessons will start shortly, I would like to remind you it is recommended that children who have had diarrhoea in the previous 2 weeks should avoid swimming pools. Late in 2015 there was a sharp increase in cryptosporidiosis cases in NSW. Many things can cause diarrhoeal illness and those who have been infected can still shed the causative agent, even after their diarrhoea has stopped. Parasites such as giardia and cryptosporidium are common and have been associated with outbreaks linked to public pools. Please ensure parents and carers of your students are advised that if their child has had diarrhoea, they are to avoid swimming pools for 2 weeks after the diarrhoea has stopped. Feel free to distribute information via the link below:

http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/Cryptosporidiosis.aspx If you have any questions or concerns please call the public health unit on 1300 066 055. Yours sincerely

NSW kids back to school after Turnbull quietly dumps Gonski funding during holidays Kids return to public schools today without hope of proper funding for their education, after the Federal Coalition during the holidays quietly dropped its promise to provide it, parents said today. The Federal Coalition before the last election promised to fund the Gonski reforms, which guaranteed all Australian students a world-class education, Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of New South Wales (P&C Federation) said. “It is unfortunate that this special time of year is being marred by the decision of the federal government to break its promise to properly fund education in Australia,” P&C Federation President Jason Vials said in a media release. “The Gonski reforms were independently recommended and supported by all major political parties at the last federal election.” “Yet new Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham has just walked away from the promises made to the electorate, and to the students of Australia.” Gonski funding commenced in 2014 after an independent review found too many Australian children were unable to access a high quality education due to a lack of government funding. The system allocated funds to schools based on individual students’ needs. It was designed to ensure all Australian children would receive a world-class education irrespective of their background and parents’ resources. Mr Vials said education funding is not a cost – it is an investment in the future of our country. “Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull talks about the need for an agile and innovative workforce, and the importance of students excelling in Science and Maths,” he said. “But Mr Turnbull refuses to provide the funding our education system needs to achieve those outcomes.” “We need a Federal Government genuinely committed to a bright future for our country and its people.” The initial implementation of the Gonski reforms have been enthusiastically embraced in NSW by the State Government, by principals, teachers and parents, he said. “We have seen the difference the extra funding is already making to our schools and

student outcomes,” he said. “We call on the Federal Government to honour its promises, and join all of the stakeholders in our education system to ensure a bright future for the students of Australia.” Mr Vials wished all students, parents and teachers a happy and successful year, especially those taking their first big step on the great adventure of education. Crookwell Public School OSHC

Starting January 2016

After The Bell Aus is delighted to be partnering with Crookwell Public School to provide families with an enriching Before and After School program. After The Bell acknowledges that children’s learning and development are significant within their school environment, which also translates to Outside School Hours Care. We are passionate and enthusiastic professionals who ensure your child is provided with a safe, nurturing and fun experience at our programs.

Program Our programs are inclusive of all children and families; including cultural, linguistically diverse and various socio-economic backgrounds. We value the importance of play by providing creative and stimulating activities in a well-supervised and caring environment. We support the growth and development through middle childhood in this environment by creating a culture where children are respected and feel safe. We value this stage of growth and development as an opportunity to further explore and develop life skills where children can reach their own individual potential. While having fun they will form friendships that will last a life time.

Nutrition We value the importance of children’s healthy eating choices. At After The Bell children are provided with a healthy nutritional breakfast and afternoon snack each session. Children have input into the program menu, whilst learning the value of good healthy choices.

Educators

Each day is an adventure and our Educators help your children create new memories. Our dedicated, trained, qualified Educators have the skills and abilities to ensure your child’s time at the program is rewarding as well as memorable, but foremost making sure your child is always having a fun time. Kindergarten Transition At After The Bell we dedicate our time to assist in a smooth transition for all kinder children. This is achieved by an OSHC Educator escorting your child/children from the program to their classroom (Before Care) and an Educator escorting your child/ren to the OSHC program (After Care) each day. Parents and children are encouraged to visit the program and meet the Educators as part of their child/children’s induction and orientation

process. All kinder children will be assigned an ‘OSHC buddy’ to help them feel comfortable and become a member of the Crookwell Public

School OSHC program.

Enrolment Process

Thank you for taking the time to register your child with After The Bell Aus. There are a number of ways to access and complete the Enrolment process, either online at www.afterthebell.com.au and select the Enrol Now link in the big purple box labelled “New to After The Bell” or you can access printable versions of all our forms on the website in the Resources sections. Some schools have printed copies of the forms, available at the Administration office. Please note: that you will require access to a printer, scanner or photocopier to complete a registration.

Option One-Completing a Registration online An online Enrolment is generally the easiest way to complete a child’s registration, you will need access to a printer, scanner and be able to scan and upload documents. There are a number of documents pertaining to your child that we require before we can accept a registration. Ensuring we have all these documents when you complete your child’s registration is the best way to make sure we can process your request as quickly as possible. To make this a little easier we have created a checklist of all the required documents we suggest you print this first and make sure you have access to all the documents prior to starting the registration process. It is even easier if you scan and save these documents into a folder prior to commencing.

Option Two-Print, Scan and Email Alternatively you can print and complete the Enrolment Forms by hand. Once complete you will need to scan the completed registration and Direct Debit Form along with all the required additional forms and email back to our Enrolment Department Make sure you print a copy of the checklist to keep track of the documents.

Option Three-Print, Copy and Mail Once you have printed and completed the Enrolment Forms, photocopy all the required documents and send to PO BOX 7082 Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, 3156. We strongly recommend sending by Registered or Express Post mail. Being able to track these private and sensitive documents is important. Make sure you print a copy of the checklist to keep track of the documents.

Additional Needs Form Some children have additional needs that we need to consider and understand as part of our accepting your child’s registration. In order to make sure we have the right qualified and experienced staff in the OSHC centre it is important that this information is provided to us. If however your child does not have any medical (or other) conditions then please disregard the Additional Needs section of the Enrolment Process.

“Lawful Authority” is not referred to in the National Law or the National Regulations. Instead there is a reference to „parental responsibility‟ . The term is referred to in the definition of parent in the National Law

(above) and is defined in the Family Law Act 1975 as “all the duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which, by law, parents have in relation to children”.

PARENTS: All parents have the powers and responsibilities in relation to the children that can only be changed by court order. These refer to all the duties, powers, responsibilities and authority are referred to as

parental responsibility. It is they are not affected by the relationship between the parents, such as whether or not they have lived together or married. A court order may take away the authority of a parent to do

something, or give it to another person.

GUARDIANS: A guardian of a child also has parental responsibility. A legal guardian is given parental responsibility by a court order. This includes situations where a child does not live with his or her parents and

there are no court orders. In these cases, the guardian is the person the child lives with who has day-to-day care of the child.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY: A person other than a parent can be allocated parental responsibility, that is, all the duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which, by law, parents have in relation to children,

under a decision or order of a court.

AUTHORISED NOMINEE means a person who has been given permission by a parent or family member to collect the child from the education and care service or the family day care educator. See section 170(5) of

the Law.
