Dear Parents and Friends,

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY On the 25

who have served in war or on peacekeeping operations. ANZAC Day has grown to become perhaps the most important national day in Australia, allowing us to reflect on the ANZAC spirit and its place in our society today. Excellence Through Opportunity

To assist teachers with a variety of assessment needs, On Demand tests can be used for:

testing new intake students or late arrivals

identifying individual student's strengths and weaknesses

helping with teacher judgments against student work

monitoring the academic growth rate of students

assisting in forward planning of teaching programs. Which domains will be covered? There is a selection of assessments at AusVELS Standard levels 1 - 10 in English and Mathematics. The domains covered will expand as the project develops. Computer Adaptive Tests are available in English and Mathematics and for Literacy - Reading, Language -Spelling, Number & Algebra or Measurement & Geometry. What about marking and results? On Demand Testing can save time for teachers by automatically marking tests and delivering results by the way of generating reports. The computer-based system will instantly mark a test and present the results to students when it is applicable and generate different types of reports for the teachers. This immediate feedback can be used to support, encourage and motivate students in their learning programs. Depending on the type of test administered, teachers have the option to give these scores to students and parents and view results through a range of available reports. The system has the capacity to store results from a range of assessment tasks, enabling teachers, students and parents to track and monitor student progress over time.

THANK YOU Volunteers are greatly appreciated at Kyabram P-12 College. There are many volunteers that do a lot of work in our school in many different ways and last week I acknowledged the Parents’ Club for all of their hard work, and the people who have taken on roles in this group.

PUPIL FREE DAY – WEDNESDAY MAY 20 I would like to inform all our parents and friends that on Wednesday, May 20

th, Kyabram P-12 College

will be conducting a pupil free day for reporting to parents, which means that no students are required at school.

PLAYGROUNDS I would like to remind parents that when students are playing on the playground equipment that is not built for their age group after school, it is the parents’ responsibility to look after their sons or daughters. The school will not be held responsible for students playing on inappropriate equipment. This is a reminder that the P-2 Playground is along the path on the Haslem St entrance, the 3/4 Playground is near the Prep/1 Building and the 5/6 Playground is located at the Haslem St entrance, on the left.

SCHOOL CROSSING AND DROPPING STUDENTS OFF It is important that when students are arriving and leaving any of our college campuses they use the crossings provided for their safety. Parents / guardians walking their children to and from school are asked to provide a good example by using the crossings as well. Also when children are being dropped off parking near a school crossing outside the designated parking bays is dangerous and illegal.

Our school has a drop off zone for all students. The drop off zone is located along Fischer Street in front of the Secondary Campus (the old bus bay). This area is for all Prep - 12 students and is a drop off / pick up zone only and a no parking zone. Students getting dropped off are to walk between the fence and the building.

ATHLETIC SPORTS I would like to wish all the students in Years 7 – 12 across our school all the best today at the Athletic Sports Day.

With our house teams of Allan, Castles and Pine Grove there will no doubt be a good amount of competitiveness around the school. There will also be the house team mascots involved in motivating the students to do their best which will be greatly enjoyed by the students.

P-6 Assistant Principal Report David Jenner

RECORDER GROUP A big thank you to our recorder group for sharing their pieces at this week’s P-4 assembly. Our students performed well, with confidence and it is great to see them sharing their musical talents with our community! Thank you also to Mrs. Meeking for your ongoing work here.

THANK YOU LEVI STEVENS Levi Stevens has recently taken on the role of Performing Arts Monitor. I had a conversation with Levi in regards to his role here and the responsibilities involved. Levi’s main role is to set up equipment for special events. Levi also works hard to keep all of the equipment in order, and helps back stage with big events such as school productions. Levi also pointed out that he is able to work with “really nice people” and he is learning that “good things come from hard work”. Congratulations Levi on your efforts here and the way in which you are modelling our College values!

Thanks Levi!

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION Kyabram P-12 College is taking part in the Australian Mathematics Competition again this year on Thursday, 30

th

July 2015. The AMC gives students external recognition of their achievements: all students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a report showing how they performed on each problem with comparative statistics. Many of the problems are set in situations to which students can relate, showing the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

Thank you to Gina Pearson for your organisation in regards to offering the competition to our students, and good luck to our participating students!

GARDENING Thank you to Jordan, Riley, Liam and Josh who have been doing a tremendous job of adding mulch to many of our Primary Campus gardens. Thanks boys for your efforts here!

BUDDIES – MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE On Tuesday of this week, our Buddy students worked on a marshmallow challenge. The students completed a fantastic activity (inspired by TED) in groups of 4, where they were required to build the tallest structure possible to support one marshmallow using just 20 uncooked spaghetti pieces, 1 metre of masking tape and 1 metre of string. The winning structure measured 56cm in height and its architects were rewarded with a marshmallow each. Well done, to everyone here; this was a fantastic activity combining fun and learning for all involved.

P/1/2 News A few reminders from the Prep-2 Team

Students are encouraged to read their home reader at least three times, once at school, once at home and again at school the next day to improve the fluency of their reading. Practice makes perfect! Students are reminded to wear their jumpers as the mornings are getting cooler. Of interest students will soon be visiting the College Agricultural. Centre as part of our Animal unit to view the visiting animals. Renee Howell (Secondary Campus science teacher) is organising the viewing of animals for us during this time....stay tuned.

Grade 1 The Grade 1 students have been actively engaged in the task of creating paper and cardboard poppies , both in their art classes and with their grade 5/6 Buddies, in readiness for the school ANZAC Day ceremony. Some grades will be making Anzac biscuits as part of their learning about procedural text. In Mathematics, the students have been demonstrating their knowledge of two and three digit numbers, using M.A.B. and assorted modelling materials. Similarly students have been revising their understanding of ‘telling the time to the half hour.’ We encourage the students to ‘tell the time’ using clocks and various technological items at home.

Grade 2 This week we have been learning more about Information Reports in writing and students have written about a range of familiar animals. In maths we have continued to add numbers from two to four digits. We have also logged onto “Mathletics” - an exciting and fun website where students can practise work set by their teachers, compete against classmates (and the world!) and score points for completing a range of tasks. Learning the logging-in procedures has been challenging, but the grade twos are up to the task!

5/6 News There is a lot happening on the sport front. Tryouts were held this week for the Regional Cross Country event which will be held on the May 1

st. Notes were sent

home yesterday, please ensure they are returned with money ASAP.

Primary School Netball tryouts are also coming up. We are taking one grade 5 girls’ team and one grade 6 girls’ team to the Echuca and District Netball Primary Tournament to be held in Echuca on Friday, 29

th May.

5/6 Winter Sports will be held on 1

st June. Students have chosen from basketball, netball, soccer and football and will

compete against other schools in our area in a round robin. Our Maths focus for term 2 in Number is Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. In Space and Measurement we will be covering Time and Length, Perimeter and Area. Our Literacy focus will be persuasive writing and comprehension strategies. Notes have gone home to students for the Australian Mathematics Competition. Please ensure money and permission notes are returned by Friday 4

th May.

Students have finished their immersion in the Healthy Lifestyles Unit so this week they will begin their major project on an area of interest from their previous learning. Next Wednesday 29

th April is the next year 5/6 assembly. All parents are invited to attend.

REPORTS AND PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS - YEARS 7-12 Years 7-12 parent/teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 29

th April between 4 pm and 7 pm in the Years 10-12

Village building. All bookings are made online through Compass and will close at 9 am on the morning of interviews. If any parent has lost their log on details, please call the office on 58512100.

LEARNING CURVE NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Each week I would like to include a parent newsletter article from the Learning Curve which is in line with the Secondary student planner. I hope you find these articles valuable. Relationships and Optimism Nearly everything we achieve in life is with and through people, side by side and face to face. Being able to build rich and caring relationships with other people is an essential lifelong habit to cultivate in our students. There are many dimensions to consider when establishing rapport with others, and students need to learn these by being explicitly taught them; parents can’t do it on their own. They include:

Living and learning collaboratively and cooperatively with other people.

Living by giving.

Focusing on mutual respect; everyone is special – expect it and respect it.

Appreciating others and their thoughts to learn from them by asking ‘tell me more’.

Listening with their eyes, their ears and their heart; being fully present.

Being true to themselves; respect the person they see in the mirror.

Building empathy for others’ feelings, needs and views; being positively mindful. The acquisition of these personal attributes will enable students to build healthy and respectful relationships with others. A close knit and harmonious friendship group provides students with opportunities to enjoy leisure activities, study, share good and not so good times together; a desirable lifelong disposition. It is all about assisting them to develop their Emotional Intelligence and Relationships and Optimism element of wellbeing. A beneficial lifelong disposition for students to build into their lives is to learn how to mix with and accept people of all age groups, differing cultures and backgrounds and in a variety of situations, ranging from family, school friends, employers, fellow workers, teachers, to competitors in sporting competitions.

ATHLETICS SPORTS ON THURSDAY The Years 7-12 College Athletics Sports were held today, Thursday. We had a great turn out with students to be congratulated on their effort, participation and behaviour on the day. VCE classes ran as normal with students leaving class to participate in the events signed up for prior to the day. Congratulations to Trudee Leahy and Marnie Blake for a very successful day.

LONE PINE AT WARRAMUNDA On Tuesday, the College captains attended the Lone Pine Memorial service at Warramunda. Riley and Fiona spoke very well about the spirit of ANZAC and what it means to a 17 year old in Kyabram. Thank you to Kim Morrison for his efforts organising the sound equipment and singers and also to Bodhi Hawken, Katie Nicol, TK and Caitlin Kelly for singing at the service. Below are our students representing Kyabram P-12 College with Max Kirk and the Kyabram Legacy group.

YARD MAINTENANCE WORK If you are available to assist with clean up/maintenance at the College could you please contact me by email ([email protected]) or by phoning the College. We have a number of areas that require attention such as painting, pruning, edging and brushcutting.

Year 7-9 Report Naplan testing is coming up for year 7 and 9 students on May 12, 13 and 14. If your child will be absent on any of these days or you have any questions regarding the test, please contact Renee Howell (year 7), or Ange Heale (year 9), Vivienne Thomas 7-9 Community Leader. Students have been making paper poppies during Home Group this week to remember our Anzacs. The Red Poppy has special significance for Australians. Poppies were among the first flowers to bloom in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium after the First World War. Here is a sample of their work.

We have four sets of lockers for sale like the one pictured. Some have 1 or 2 doors missing. If you are interested in buying one or more of these, could you please contact me ([email protected]) or Stuart Bott, ([email protected]) at the college by phone or email to make an offer.

FAMILY NIGHT BBQ Kyle Boal-Ryan

On Tuesday, 17th March Lifeskills ran their Family Night. Students, along with their parents and friends, mingled with

staff and teachers in a friendly setting at the outdoor area of Studio M. It was lovely to see students and teachers from previous years mix with current and new students and families. Jane Kightly welcomed everyone and announced the 2015 leaders: Gus Faisst (Senior Lifeskills Leader), Gray Hapruona (Assistant Lifeskills Leader), Tyler Thomson (Assistant Lifeskills Leader) and Ryan Freemantle (Junior Lifeskills Leader). These Captains all gave terrific speeches about themselves and outlined how they would work to make the Lifeskills Program a great experience. They shared the fact that all our sales and profit from baking and catering pays for our annual camp, so the motivation is high. The BBQ food and dessert were yummy and the evening was very pleasant for all, with lots of catching up for some.
