Mother’s Day Stall

On Wednesday 8th May the Mother’s Day Stall will take place which raises funds for the Year 6 end of year activity. Thank you to all the families who have donated and wrapped goods for the stall. Your donations are much appreciated.

We would also like to thank Angie Pirie for all her hard work behind the scenes as well as Vanessa Smith and Danielle Boughton for giving up their time to run the stall on Wednesday.

All gifts will be sold for $5. Wishing our mums, nans and aunties a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday 12th May!

Small Schools’ Cross Country

This Friday, 33 students will compete at the Small Schools’ Cross Country at Woodbury Oval, Glossodia.

As our school runs this event, the P & C operates a canteen and BBQ on the day. If your child is attending the carnival we would kindly ask you to spend a little time helping out if you can, as it is always very busy. Please phone Angie Pirie if you can help on the day on 4567 7469 or her mobile 0414 570 365.

We would like to thank the parents who have already generously offered their assistance and those who have kindly donated goods to sell on the day or money to purchase supplies.

School Cross Country

A reminder that our 2019 Cross Country Champions will be presented with their medallions in the Week 6 Parent Assembly.

Safety around the School

From time to time the school receives reports of strangers in the area. Sometimes incidents are reported to us as a community service notification. If a report is directly related to the school, or may impact on our students, procedures are implemented which includes the notification of parents which may occur via message or a note sent home, as well as notification to the police and school security.

The school conducts emergency drills once a term and extra drills as required. Last week we conducted a lockdown drill. A lockdown would be used in an emergency where there is an external threat to the school or students. In the event of an evacuation, lockdown or other emergency, parents will be notified via SMS, Sentral messaging and Class Dojo. The procedures of drills and their purpose is discussed with students and strategies for keeping safe are explicitly taught in Personal Development and Health lessons. Please be assured that staff have the safety and wellbeing of your students front and foremost and are always vigilant regarding what is occurring in and around the school.

Hawkesbury Show Art

This year the Hawkesbury Show will take place from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th May. Each class has entered a chook in the ‘Painted Chook Competition’ and students have entered individual artworks in the Primary Competition ‘My Favourite Transport’. We wish our students the best of luck in these competitions as well as any competitions they have entered independently. If you are planning on attending the show, we hope you spend some time in the arts pavilion and in the paddock to inspect the students’ handiwork!

NAPLAN 2019

On the 14th, 15th and 16th of May the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3 and 5.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement.

Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

This year our school will continue to sit the paper test.

Federal Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall P & C will be holding a BBQ and cake stall for the Federal Election on Saturday 18th May. This presents a great opportunity to raise funds for our school. Can you help make our fundraiser a success? Donations are needed for our cake stall. Cake boxes are available for collection from the school office. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Attached is a flyer with further information.

CLASS NEWS

CLASS K/1/2 - Mrs McCloy & Ms Wheen

Welcome back, I hope you all had a lovely break. Term 2 began with us reading the story ‘Boy’, about a deaf child who used his ‘dancing hands’ to communicate. We learnt to sign our own names using letters and how to say ‘My name is’ using Auslan. We are also learning about direct speech and how to use punctuation to show that someone in speaking. Green spelling group are learning about contractions eg. didn’t, that’s, whilst our Blue spellers are learning about short e, long e (ee, ea) and short e (ea). In Maths Year 1 and 2 are learning about place value and Kindergarten are consolidating their understanding of part whole to ten (eg ten is 5 and 5, 3 and 7 etc.) and numbers to ten with 5 as a reference (8 is 5 and 3, 7 is 5 and 2 etc.). Homework this week is unit 8. If students are up to week 8 and want to do more maths they can login to their Mathletics or Maths Online as I have set activities in both. PD/H/PE this term is ‘Healthy Me’ where we learn about the choices that keep us healthy such as food, fitness, brushing our teeth and sharing (eg you can share a toy but not a toothbrush). In Creative Arts we will be looking at Visual Art this term, although we will still continue to learn about music through brief sessions on the glockenspiels. Banana messaging has had a twofold positive affect in K/1/2. 1) We are eating lots of delicious bananas! 2) We are reading every morning and figuring out tricky words just so we can share our special message with our friends. Happy Mother’s Day to our K/1/2 mums. I hope your special person from K/1/2 helps you all day on Sunday.

CLASS 3/4 - Mrs Mackie & Mrs Carroll

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful break!

This term in History we will be looking at the First Contacts in Australia of European and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We will be looking at life before and after first contact and also at explorers and voyages of discovery. Our Science unit this term is Beneath our feet which is a geology unit looking at soil, rocks and how different landforms are formed. Could students look out for interesting rocks they find at home and bring them in to school to investigate. For the next 2 weeks, Year 3 Homework will consist of NAPLAN related tasks. Year 4 Homework will continue as normal. Interviews will be held at the end of the term after reports are sent home. If you need to meet with us before then, please contact the office to make a time.

CLASS 5/6 - Mr Hynds

Welcome back to everyone in my class. Our classroom routines are fully underway this term. The children will be completing homework this week including mentals. Our spelling routine for the term has commenced last week so students will be practising their words as part of their homework. The number of spelling words each student completes every fortnight is a reflection of their current ability level for their grade. As students show accuracy in tests they automatically move on to words that are more challenging. As our homework has all 30 words of the list, parents are welcome to use them for extension activities, particularly the next 6 higher words. This will help prepare your child for the higher order words they will be moving to in the future. Reading group’s activities will continue this week following on from last term and I look forward to having any parent helpers, so please let us know if you are available, even if it’s not every week. We would love to see you. I wish all my students in our cross country team all the best at the Small Schools’ Carnival on Friday.

LIBRARY

Welcome back, I hope that everyone had a great holiday! Congratulations to everyone who has completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge, great work! Students have been so keen to keep reading that we are having a competition to see who can read the most books. Anyone who would like to take part just needs to keep reading and keep a list of the books they read, these can be brought into to school to keep a record of the number read, and there will be a prize for the winner. Good luck and keep reading. Keep up the great work those students who are still completing the challenge.

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

Compulsory School Attendance

Information for parents

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

What are my legal responsibilities?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss

out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

What if my child has to be away from school?

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

• being sick, or having an

infectious disease

• having an unavoidable medical appointment

• being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

• exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.

Travel

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

Page 11: TERM 2, WEEK 2 Bilpin Public School May 2019 NEWSLETTER · independently. If you are planning on attending the show, we hope you spend some time in the arts pavilion and in the paddock

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school.

My child won’t go to school. What should I do?

You should contact the principal as soon as possible to discuss the issue and ask for help. Strategies to help improve attendance may include a referral to the school’s learning and support team or linking your child with appropriate support networks. The principal may seek further support from the Home School Liaison Program to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

What might happen if my child continues to have unacceptable absences?

It is important to understand that the Department of Education and Communities may be required to take further action where children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unexplained or unjustified absences from school.

Some of the following actions may be undertaken:

• Compulsory Schooling

Conferences

You may be asked, along with your child, to attend a Compulsory Schooling Conference. The conference will help to identify the supports your child may need to have in place so they attend school regularly. The school, parents and agencies will work together to develop an agreed plan (known as Undertakings) to support your child’s attendance at school.

• Application to the Children’s Court – Compulsory Schooling Order

If your child’s attendance at school remains unsatisfactory the Department

may apply to the Children’s Court for a Compulsory Schooling Order. The Children’s Court magistrate may order a Compulsory Schooling Conference to be convened.

• Prosecution in the Local Court

School and Department staff remain committed to working in partnership with you to address the issues which are preventing your child’s full participation at school. In circumstances where a breach of compulsory schooling orders occurs further action may be taken against a parent in the Local Court. The result of court action can be the imposition of a community service order or a fine.

What age can my child leave school?

All New South Wales students must complete Year 10 or its equivalent. After Year 10, and up until they reach 17 years of age, there are a range of flexible options for students to complete their schooling.

Working in Partnership

The Department of Education and Communities recognises that working collaboratively with students and their families is the best way to support the regular attendance of students at school.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child to fulfil their life opportunities.
