Teaching and Learning Tales Lachlan van Dartel – 4V Mr van Dartel is new to teaching but not new to Dubbo South Public School. Born and bred in Dubbo, Mr van Dartel attended Dubbo South Public School as a student. Whilst he initially ventured off to Wollongong University to complete a double degree in Arts/Politics and Economics he soon found himself shifting into education. “I worked as a Student Learning Support Officer for a gap year after finishing high school. I really enjoyed the work,” he said. “I have family and friends who are teachers who inspired me to become a teacher.” Mr van Dartel is making an easy transition into what can be an incredibly difficult first year in the teaching profession. In the classroom he is cool, calm, creative and caring. “I have had a lot of different jobs in my life since I was young. I think that has helped me to understand and build relationships with my students.” As a musician Mr van Dartel is naturally comfortable in front of a diverse crowd. “I play piano and guitar. It is nice to be able to share my love of music with my students.” Mr van Dartel also loves sports and plays everything with a ball. He is the coach of Dubbo South Public School’s AFL team and is often seen kicking the ball around with students every chance he can. Mr van Dartel has fostered a calm and creative classroom environment. During the morning session students work in teams at different stations to advance their reading skills. Mr van Dartel works with one team to conduct a close reading session while the other teams independently complete literacy work at different stations. One group is silently reading, another is responding to a creative writing stimulus, one group is designing their own amusement park, others are listening to an information show and refining their note taking skills. Mr van Dartel asks each student questions designed to engage and challenge their thinking. He offers positive feedback to acknowledge the students’ hard work and encourages them to keep striving forward. You would never know from the ease, energy and enthusiasm in Mr van Dartel’s classroom that this was his first year of teaching. He is clearly exactly where he is meant to be.

Student voices: Darcy Ferguson, 9 years – “Mr van Dartel is nice and fun. He cares about other people and sings a lot. I think he should be a famous singer but he is a very good teacher too.” Ruby Jackson, 9 years – “Mr van Dartel is really nice. He has taught me how to spell better.” Hannah Dawson, 10 years – “Mr van Dartel is very kind. He has helped me a lot with maths this year.”
