• When we add money we need to be careful of the decimal point.

• A decimal point tells us where a full dollar ends and the cents begin.

• When we reach 100 cents how many dollars do we have?

• We use decimal points to make it easier to see how many full dollars and cents we have.

• There is a special way to add decimal numbers.

• Watch this video to see how to do it then have a go yourself. https://bit.ly/3bnx5iZ

Task: Complete the ‘Transactions’ worksheet.

Term 2 Week 3 Thursday Year 5 & 6 Reading Writing Math We are learning to identify persuasive devices. I can identify describing words for different sides of an argument. Equipment –Worksheet “Persuasive Devices: pg 23 Mini lesson (10min) – There are always two different sides of an argument and they require different ‘language’ to be persuasive. Read the words on the worksheet and think about whether they are ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ Task – Either, cut and paste the words into the correct spaces on the worksheet, or write them in. Independent reading (15-20 min) – students read their just right books/ library / home books of choice or online resources and read silently. Optional – research “who is Greta Thunberg?”

We are learning to use descriptive words to be more persuasive. I can write descriptive words into sentences, to suit the argument. Equipment – Worksheet “Persuasive Devices: pg 23 Mini lesson (10min) - Reread the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ word lists created in the reading session. Read through each sentence in Section 2 of the worksheet and think about appropriate words that make sense in the sentences. Writing Task: Complete Section 2 of the worksheet by filling in the missing words. (Optional) Extension – check your paragraphs from your own writing and see if you can use these words to make your writing even more persuasive.

We are learning to calculate percentages. I can calculate the percentage of a number under 100. Equipment: Youtube, pen, worksheet Mini Lesson

• Where have you seen this % symbol before? Do you know what it means?

• It is called a ‘Percent’. A ‘percent’ is a ‘part’ of something.

• If your computer battery is 75% full that means 75 parts are still charged but 25 parts are flat!

• Percentages are measured out of 100.

• 100 means something is the full amount.

Watch these two videos fully to see how percentages work. https://bit.ly/3eCf4iH https://bit.ly/3alJumd Use them while you complete the questions. Task: Complete the questions on the ‘Percentages’ sheet.

Spelling: Week 3 Term 2 Spelling focus – words beginning with prefix ‘trans’ meaning ‘across’ – Look Say Cover Write Check + one task of choice from the “Spelling activities for homework” or Spelling activities for school” suggestions.

Term 2 Week 3 Friday Year 5 & 6 Reading Writing Math We are learning to recognise expert opinion and statistics in persuasive writing. Equipment –Worksheet “Persuasive Devices: pg 24 Mini lesson (10min) – Think about the use of ‘experts’ and statistics and how they are used to persuade people – e.g. in advertisements you might see a dentist talking about toothbrushes, or a medical ‘expert’ on the news talking about why we should stay in lockdown (or not). People can be convinced by the experts if they trust them. Task – Read through Worksheet “Persuasive Devices: pg 24. You job is to name the experts and identify the statistics. Independent reading (15-20 min) – students read their just right books/ library / home books of choice or online resources and read silently.

We are learning to use expert opinions and statistics to be more persuasive. Equipment – Worksheet “Persuasive Devices: pg 25 Mini lesson (10min) – Experts and statistics are only convincing if they are relevant to the topic and if they can be trusted. Writing Task: Complete the worksheet. You might have to do some research! You need to support the sentences by adding expert opinion and statistics. “Not enough is being done about bullying?” Could the expert be a child? Could the statistics be how many times they have witnessed or been bullied at school? Do you want the opinion of a child psychologist instead? Do they have more convincing statistics?

We are learning to add and subtract money totals. I can budget items to a set amount of money. Equipment: Woolworths online or a catalogue, Youtube, pen, worksheet Mini Lesson

• Sometimes we only have a certain amount of money to spend.

• Today your challenge is to use real-life shopping items and pretend to ‘spend’ amounts of money.

• The Friday sheet has further instructions.

Re-watch the video from Wednesday https://bit.ly/2VIIzXK if you need. Task: Complete the challenges on the ‘Friday Shopping Challenge’ sheet. Send a photo or screenshot to your teacher using Teams.

Spelling: Week 3 Term 2 Spelling focus – words beginning with prefix ‘trans’ meaning ‘across’ – spelling test. Say the word, say it in a sentence, say the word again, so children can hear the word in context before writing it down.

Friday Shopping Activity

Equipment: This worksheet and a computer or iPad

Instructions: Visit the Woolworths Online website or app.

Using this website you can search for food and grocery items and add them to your cart.

Take a photo or screenshot of your cart and send it to your teacher.

Challenges: 1. Purchase 5 items and get the LEAST change from $50. 2. Purchase 10 items and get your total between $70 and $75. 3. Make two purchases – one of 10 items and one of 5 items. The totals must

be within $5 of each other. 4. Purchase 5 non-food and 5 food items which are within $1 of each other. 5. Purchase 6 items which will give you less than $10 change from $100. 6. Find five items less than $20 each and put them in ascending

order/descending order.
