If you are someone who is frequently in our school you may have noticed some of the changes that have been occurring over the last few months. Our Yarning Circle and surrounding gardens were recently completed, creating another beautiful outdoor learning area for our students. In addition to that, a spectacular Aboriginal mural is currently being painted in the same area by artist Danielle Mate Sullivan. Danielle is a talented and original contemporary Aboriginal Artist whose previous art work became part of the private collection of President Obama. In 2013, her art work was presented to Ellen DeGeneres in the United States. Danielle espouses that her art work is about where she is from, where she has been, and where she is at with her current belonging. She is inspired to broaden other people’s exposure and experiences with contemporary Aboriginal art.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS
Last week Danielle collaborated closely with our Aboriginal students, some parent representatives, teacher representatives, our PBL representative and a number of other students to produce a design that would reflect our school and its students. This mural will not only help beautify our school and enhance the indigenous outdoor learning space but also serve as an effective teaching tool for our teachers. We eagerly await the finished product. Other projects set to be completed over the next few months include the permanent weather proof undercover area in the P1 Cola playground and a sail for the Tiered Learning area. The sail will provide students with some much needed relief from the sun on hot days and therefore increase the likelihood of the outdoor learning space being used for both leisure and educational purposes. The P1 Cola shelter will provide both shelter from the sun as well as being completely weather proof.
As the cold weather hits, so do the winter bugs. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety's sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. If your child answers this question by saying “nothing”, try asking a different question: “What words did you learn today?”, “Who did you play with at lunch time?”, “What did you enjoy most about school today?” “How many phonemes do you know now?” Framing questions in a positive way can encourage children to remember the good parts of their day rather than focusing on the negative. One of the keys to doing well in school is staying positive. Positivity will make your child feel better and give them a good attitude to be more productive with their schoolwork. Staying positive in school means staying optimistic, keeping organised and avoiding negativity.
A reminder to all families that Monday 10th June is a Public Holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday. Have a wonderful extra day spending time with your family and friends. School resumes for Week 7 Tuesday June 11th.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month is an annual initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia running throughout the month of June (1-30 June), to raise awareness of Australia's second deadliest cancer. On the 19th June is Red Apple Day and we will have Red Apples for students if they wish to exchange a gold coin for an apple. All proceeds will go the Bowel Cancer Australia.
On Wednesday 26th June Greenway Park will hold a mini Fun Day of activities. We have sausage sizzle, snow cones, popcorn, games in the hall and photo booth. This day is for students only. This is the first of our Fundraising efforts to support the students at Greenway Park school. More
information to follow shortly.
We are excited at the great response to the Earn and Learn Program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned. Your children can place the stickers on the special sticker sheet. Once completed, bring it to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box. Sticker sheets are available on line or you can simply drop the stickers in the box located in the office. Thank you to everyone that has already collected stickers. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. The Program ends on the 25th June.
Parent/Teacher interviews will be held on Tuesday 2nd July and Wednesday 3rd July 2019. Student Reports will go home on Thursday 27th June. Interviews are strictly 10 minutes and spaces are limited. If you require more time with a particular teacher, please arrange a separate meeting by telephoning the school on 87830859. Bookings will be open soon.

Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines.
This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.
Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your
child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:
has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after
school or during holidays)
is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a
funeral)
is sick, or has an infectious illness. Constant sick days needs to have medical certificates
attached to the explanation.
If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the
Deputy Principal or office staff.
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please send an absentee note detailing your
child's name, class, date of absence and reason to your child's teacher on his/her return to school.
If your child is going to be absent for more than two or three days, please notify the school.
If your child arrives late to school or is leaving early from school, you will need to sign your child in
or out from the school office.
Keep children at home when they are sick. A child who is not healthy cannot concentrate on school work. If your child is sick and is absent for more than two days, you must contact the school by the third day to explain the absence and provide a doctor’s certificate. Regular and unexplained absences are followed up by the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO).
If, for any reason, your child is late they must go to the front office for a late slip. This is to be handed to the class teacher on arrival at the classroom. Regular late arrivals are followed up by
the Home School Liaison Officer.
If there is an urgent need for your child to leave school before 3.00pm parents need to go to the administration office first and collect an early leaver slip prior to collecting your child from his/her class.

6C Class Report…… The Japanese Cherry Blossom
Over the last week in our Visual Arts lessons, we have been learning about the
Japanese cherry blossom. Known as "sakura" in Japanese, these pale blooms are
a symbol of more than just spring—they stand for renewal and hope.
Did you know?
- Cherry blossoms are Japan’s national flower.
- They have a short lifespan of 16-20 years with each tree only flowering for
about a week.
- The Japanese love cherry blossoms so much, they've turned them into an
ice cream flavour.
- There are 200 different varieties of cherry blossom.
- They aren’t always pink.
- The flower pedals are edible.
Once we had an understanding of the history behind the national flower, it was
then time for us to use our creative minds to draw and design our cherry blossom.
The initial step, after we had a rough idea as to what we wanted it to look like, was
to sketch an outline using lead pencil. When we were happy with that, detailing
was added. This was then followed by designing the actual piece using various
materials such as crayons and oil pastels whereby each student had a different
view on what they wanted their cherry blossom to look like. Upon completion of our
designs, each cherry blossom reflected our individual creativity and perception of
this specific art form.
We were impressed by the final product as the cherry blossoms we created looked
sugoi (amazing in Japanese)
