Class 4NB Newsletter Term 3 2019 Welcome to Term 3! This term we are taking an inquiry based learning approach to investigate the “Domino Effect” and how it is seen in many different aspects of life. From cause and effect in English, to contact and non-contact forces in Science, the impacts of humans on the environment of different continents, and what can go wrong when our measurement or fractions are inaccurate in Math, we are sure to discover some amazing things. We hope to have the chance to meet with you and your child in our invaluable Three-Way Reporting this term, to discuss your child’s progress on their learning journey. Teachers: Megan Bailey (Mon/Tue) [email protected] Clare Naughton (Wed/Thurs/Fri) [email protected] Specialist Lessons School begins at 8.45am. Please ensure students arrive prior to the 8.45am bell so they can have an organised start to the day. For those students participating in Religious Instruction it is held on Monday 2.00-2.30pm. Parade is on Mondays at 2.30pm in Girrawheen Place. Everyone is welcome. Languages (Japanese) is on Tuesday. Library is every Wednesday. A library bag is required to borrow books. Borrowing will resume 7 May. Music is Wednesday. P.E. is Wednesday at 10.30am. Homework is due on Friday each week. They will also write and present their own descriptive historical recount from the perspective of a child present at the time of the arrival of the First Fleet. Maths Focus areas explored this term include money (purchasing and giving change); strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; fractions and decimals; symmetry; units of measurement; area of regular and irregular shapes; and equivalence using addition and subtraction. Students will complete written assessment on the following topics: locating familiar fractions on a number line and recognising common equivalent fractions in familiar contexts; comparing areas of regular and irregular shapes using informal units and using scaled instruments to measure temperature, mass, capacity and length; recalling multiplication and division facts; and using simple strategies to solve a measurement inquiry question. Science Students will investigate how forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. Students will conduct an investigation about how contact and non-contact forces are exerted on an object, and design and investigate their own game or activity utilising these forces. HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Students will investigate sources including maps to explore the continents of Africa and South America. Students will sort, record and represent data in different formats, including large-scale maps using basic cartographic conventions. They will describe and compare the characteristics of Africa and South America and identify the interconnections between the environment, animals and people. They will identify and describe distributions and simple patterns. Technologies (Design Technologies) Students investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system. Students design, test and evaluate a pinball machine, Rube Goldberg machine or other game/activity to bring together their understanding of the “Domino Effect”.

Curriculum focus – what we will be working on in class this term Learning area Content Assessment

English Students will listen to, read and explore a variety of historical texts including historical and literary recounts written from different people's perspectives

Students will read historical recounts, answer comprehension questions and identify language features used to engage the audience.

HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences)

Students will investigate sources including maps to explore the continents of Africa and South America.

Students will sort, record and represent data in different formats, including large-scale maps using basic cartographic conventions. They will describe and compare the characteristics of Africa and South America and identify the interconnections between the environment, animals and people. They will identify and describe distributions and simple patterns.

Technologies (Design Technologies)

Students investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system.

Students design, test and evaluate a pinball machine, Rube Goldberg machine or other game/activity to bring together their understanding of the “Domino Effect”.
