PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Thank you to all those who came along and joined in our Educa on Week celebra ons. Our open classroom STEM
a ernoon was great fun, with lots of hands‐on problem solving using our Science and Technology, Engineering and Maths
skills and understandings.
Our Educa on Week assembly yesterday saw
excellent performances by our Band, Choir and
Dance troupe. Congratula ons to all our Educa on
Week medal winners.
Our Dance Troupe are to be congratulated for their recent performance at the Hunter Dance Fes val. Their many weeks
of rehearsal paid off in an excellent performance. Thanks go to Mrs Cambourn and Ms Angela Cooper for their work with
our students this year. Thanks too to Mr Sco and our families for their support with the the recent performance.
The Zone Athle cs Carnival was a great opportunity for many of our students to display their talents on the field. Mr
Burke and Ms Oosterveen were very proud of the behaviour and sportsmanship of our school’s Zone representa ves. Our
students achieved some excellent results including quite a few ‘Personal Bests’. Thanks go to all of our parents for
suppor ng our students in this event and congratula ons to Amelia R who will go on to represent Hillsborough Public at
the Regional Carnival.
Term 3 Week 4 15 August 2018
We recently held our school Public Speaking Finals to select our State representa ves for the Hunter Inter School Public
Speaking compe on. I would like to congratulate our school winners, Adeline B and Nevaeh E; Raya P and Christopher L;
Vesper B and Nicholas L; Elise M and Jasper C. With the Zone Finals well underway this week, our school representa ves
are performing extremely well. Early results have awarded a Highly Commended to Jasper C and Nicholas L has won the
Stage Two compe on. We would like to congratulate these students and all of our school representa ves and wish all
the best to those s ll to compete.
The ‘Hillsborough Hurricanes’, our school’s Premier’s Deba ng Challenge team, have won their round of the local
compe on with only one loss all season. Our team of Elise M, Jorja M, Bailey W and Max V have demonstrated excellent
talents in formula ng persuasive and compelling arguments and presen ng them clearly to an audience. We are very
proud of the work our team has done developing their deba ng skills. Thanks go to Mrs Pike, Mrs Dubojski and Miss
McWhirter for their work with our students.
Congratula ons to our students par cipa ng in last
week’s Touch Football Knockout. While they did not
get through the Knockout rounds on the day, our
teams played very well and showed excellent
a tudes and sportsmanship. Thank you to Mrs
Cambourn and Mr Hanson for their work with our
teams and to all our parents who came out to
support their par cipa on.
I would just like to take this opportunity to highlight the achievements of some of our talented students here at
Hillsborough PS. Raya P, as part of the Music Bus program, is the overall Junior Winner of the Mi‐Tunes annual songwri ng
compe on with her work Will You Remember Me. As a prize for her amazing efforts, The Music Bus will be taking Raya
into the studio to record her song professionally. Marina C who recently took to the stage in the Sound of Music is
currently preparing for a performance at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Hunter Trebles. We are very proud of the
amazing talents of our students!
Finally congratula ons to our School Band and Rock Band group who are performing today at Cardiff High School’s MADD
(Music Arts Drama Dance) performance. Our Year Six students are a ending this performance as part of the transi on to
High School program offered by Cardiff High. I am sure it will be an enjoyable performance, highligh ng the talents of our
local schools.

We would just like to remind all students walking along
Waratah Avenue to take care as they travel up the road
towards EK Avenue where the footpath peters out. Cars
coming along that road are o en moving very quickly and
in the a ernoons par cularly, sun blindness can be
problema c.
Please stay well clear of the road and get home safely.

Stall will be held in the hall on Monday 27th August. Once again

Last week students from Hillsborough Public School
represented our school in a variety of events at Zone
Athle cs. We would like to congratulate all of the
students who made it to zone and par cipated over
the two days.
Thanks to Mr Burke and Ms Oosterveen who
accompanied our students on both Wednesday and
Thursday.

Every fortnight we choose two students, one from K –
2 and one from 3—6 who have been seen upholding
our school values. These may be students who have
helped a friend, picked up rubbish lying around or
went and talked to someone si ng on the buddy
bench.
These students receive their awards at assembly every
fortnight, highligh ng the value they were upholding
as a member of Hillsborough Public School.

Each week at assembly a student has the privilege of
reading the Acknowledgement of Country that
incorporates our original Acknowledgement with one
wri en by students at Hillsborough Public School.
Each class worked on their own Acknowledgment of
Country, working together to create an
Acknowledgement that incorporates their
understanding of the local area, the land we live on
and the contribu on that Aboriginal People have
made to the Awabakal area.

K‐6 Book Week Performance The theme for Book Week 2018 is Find Your Treasure. K‐6 students will be celebra ng Book Week on Wednesday 22 August with an interac ve and educa onal in‐school performance Treasure Hunt! The cost is $6.30 per student, please return permission note and payment to the office by 17 August. NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge 2018 Only 2 weeks to go! It is wonderful to see so many completed entries coming in. Scholas c have implemented a new computer system and are
experiencing despatching issues. As a result our Book Fair will be delayed. New Dates: Tue 11, Wed 12 & Thur 13 Sept 2018 New Times: Before School: 8:00am ‐ 9:00am A er School: 3:00pm ‐ 4:00pm All families are invited to visit the library to purchase books for their children. Credit card facili es are available. A generous percentage of sales will be returned to the school for further literary purposes to benefit all HPS students.
