To continue into the following year these members would need to nominate and be voted in by the community at the AGM. If you are interested in joining the Governing Council until the end of this year, please email Dan Kuss at

[email protected]. School Photos—Monday 27 August Earlier this week envelopes were sent home with every student. Please ensure you read the information and follow the instructions on the envelopes. No money is to be sent to school prior to the day. The school does not collect the money, it goes directly to MSP Photography. Please keep your envelopes at home until the actual day photos are taken (Monday 27 August). Correct money must be sealed in the envelopes as no change is given. Why not give ONLINE ORDERING a go… it’s quick and

easy. Family envelopes are available from the Front Office. An added incentive for families this year is that MSP now offers a 10% discount for all family orders above $90.00 a family. Preschool Transition and 2019 Class Placements Students starting Reception next year have been notified of a placement and advised of their first transition visit dates. The Preschool, Junior Primary Staff and Leadership have worked very closely together to ensure this exciting and maybe daunting time is a very positive one for these

young chi ldren.

Communications Over the years our parent Governing Council Communications committees have been instrumental in making a huge difference to communication efficiencies. For example, since an audit lead by parents in 2013 we have established a new website format; introduced Flexi Buzz, an instant app communication medium; begun using electronic forms to gain responses for events and

surveys and supported our class parents in their role. The introduction of QKR was also driven by this group. This year our Communications Governing Council sub-committee have been involved in a range of projects, for example: reviewing our website—we have a new website layout organised and plan to go online with this later this year and ensuring that all families are accessing information whether through paper, Flexibuzz or email. Currently our work is concentrating on our strategy to gain feedback from the community and how we can build on the community engagement Goodwood

Primary is famous for. Should you be interested in working with the Communications team, please don’t hesitate to email me on [email protected] Play Ground Redevelopment The Building and Grounds team, students and Nikki have been working long hours meeting with the company drawing up plans for the playground. It won’t be long now and we will be able to have a community information morning where you will be able to come along have a look at the plans and give us feedback.

This sub-committee of Governing Council is also spending huge amounts of time supporting me with the planning for our 16th class building work and classroom redevelopment we hope to have started before the end of the year. August 25 … The Wallace Family are holding a Song

Bazaar to raise money for Beyond Blue. It sounds like it will be a great night to raise money for a good cause and connect with your community. See page 7 for the advert. Research and engineering starts at an early age...

I had an unexpected visit the other day from children in 17N who shared with me their models of the school they had created.

Their detail and attention to scale was exce l l ent . Some children even had

under ground water systems. I plan to recruit them onto our building and ground s committee! Kind regards Deb Brassington Principal

Term 3 Week 2 Assembly

Many thanks to 12C who facilitated our week 3 assembly. During this assembly 1M shared how our identity affects the decisions we make. Also students from 6 M introduced their proposal to stop using straws. Their research into how such a small plastic item can impact on the environment certainly provided us with an excellent argument to take up the challenge and make a difference. Their proposal will be taken to the canteen committee for consideration.

Congratulations to these students who received awards.

Home Learning Trial and Feedback

At the start of the year the Student Learning and Wellbeing Committee asked Parents and Students what they thought about home work (what we now know as home learning) so we could evaluate the effectiveness and impact of a new home learning model that is being trialled this year.

We received 142 and 130 responses from parents and students respectively which was fantastic but it meant that we

had a lot of responses to go through and interpret. Below are the insights we have obtained from the survey responses:

The majority (over half) of both parents and students said that homework was something that allowed students to

progress or consolidate learning commenced in classroom; improve and build on skills taught in the classroom; and finish work that might not get done at school.

Parents thought homework was important for their child because it helped them for later years when homework

would become more of a priority; it helped them build on skills learnt in the classroom; and gave them (as parents) an insight into what their child was doing at school. Students however said homework was important to improve their skills learnt in the classroom; allowed for teacher and student-led learning; and made them a better student.

The types of homework activities valued by parents (the most) were reading, literacy or math/numeracy activities;

and activities that encouraged Inquiry or were self-guided. Students also valued the same activities as parents however students also listed practical (physical or mental), project based or life skills activities as ones they valued.

Parents valued the activities they listed as they developed key skills for life and allowed their child to explore their

abilities beyond the curriculum and taught them soft skills such as time management and independence. Students also

valued the activities as they developed key skills for life but they also said that the activities they valued were interesting or engaging. The majority of students (over half) said that homework had no or minimal impact on their life outside of school. Parent responses were mixed however with some saying that homework had no or minimal impact but others saying that it made their life busier with less time to fit in other activities and it was stressful. We would like to again thank everyone who completed the survey at the start of the year and let you know that at the start of Term 4 we will be sending out the same survey (with a few differences) to see how the responses have changed (if at all) after experiencing the new home learning model. Farewell gift for Catherine Murch from GPS students and their families. Dear students and families of Goodwood Primary School. As you are aware from school emails, Catherine Murch ("Ms Murch"), has taken up a new position within the De-

partment for Education for the remainder of 2018. As a parent who has known and worked closely with Cathe-rine for many of her 9 years at Goodwood Primary School I would like to organise a farewell gift for her on behalf of all students and families of GPS, both past and present. This it to thank her for the substantial contributions she made towards the teaching and well-being of all students including her time as a classroom teacher, a playground yard-duty confidante, and more recently as a member of the school leadership who worked closely with every classroom teacher and all students during their Inquiry-

Based-Learning (IBL) activities, and who also was the staff member on the Governing Council's Student Learning and Well-Being Subcommittee. If you would like to contribute to Catherine's farewell gift please email [email protected] to gain elec-tronic bank details, find me in the GPS gym on most Fri-day mornings between 8-9am during hockey training, or place cash in a clearly marked and sealed envelope and leave it in the GPS front office. Please include the names and messages you'd like included on the card or if you

would prefer to remain anonymous. No indication will be made as to the size of any donation! Suggestions of gift ideas are welcome. The gift will be presented to Catherine at the farewell event that the school is going to organise for later during this term. Kind regards, Bec Anderson (Zoe, year 6, Mia now in yr 8).

The Wallace family are members of our community. This will be a great opportunity to raise money for a great cause and connect with your community.
