BIKE ED! On Tuesday the 4th of August we had our

third Bike ED lesson.

After recess one of the instructors, called

Darren, came in our class and taught us

about T-junction and give way signs. He told

us that at a T-junction, if you want to go left

you have to scan back, signal cars behind

you and look for any cars coming from the

right. If there are none you can turn and

keep going, but if there is a car you have to

slow down, give way and then go.

If you want to turn right you have to look

both ways, give way to any cars or bikes and

then go straight and then turn when you

get in the bike lane.

Darren also talked about security and about locking the frame to a high

pole or something like that.

After that we went down to the basketball courts near P1 and got into

groups. I was in Darren’s group.

First we did some obstacle courses and tight turns which I had some

trouble with. After we rode around cones weaving around them and

slowing down at the last bit for 10 seconds. I really had fun doing these

exercises even if I struggled a bit.

I’m really looking forward to the next lesson when we’ll go out riding on

the streets.

The photo is of Callum, Andrea, Harrison and Nathan using the skills

they have learnt in Bike Ed to ride around the school.

Is your son or daughter taking up the Challenge in 2015? If so, please ensure they fill in their student reading records as they read their books, gets them signed off as they go and please make sure your child hands it in to their teacher or the school contact person before: Friday 4 September.

The Challenge is to read 12 books in total:

Reception to Year 7: 8 of these books are to be from the Challenge booklists, available on our website and 4 of their own choice, which can include class novels and research texts. Years 8 and 9: 4 books from the Challenge lists and 8 of their own choice, which can include prescribed texts, research texts and any other texts from their studies. Years 10 to 12: 12 books of their own choice, which can include prescribed texts, research texts and any other texts from their studies.

Student reading records are available from your child’s teacher, from the school contact person, who is usually someone in the school library (ask your child’s teacher) or download from the website. Your son/daughter can also Rate a Read, reviewing the books that they are reading and send this in to us. We award a winner every month with a book prize and post their review, first name and school on our website. Also, we have a student blog section for both primary and secondary students to post and share thoughts about the Challenge and books that they are reading – encourage your son/daughter to have a go! The Challenge website has a section for students, school staff and families. Check it out for some great ideas! Don’t forget the GreatStart website, developed to support families with ideas and activities to help make the most of everyday learning and events, especially important in the first five years of their life: ‘We know families are busy so we have ideas for activities that you are already doing, ideas that may be new and will only take a few minutes and others that will take longer. We have also included extra information for you if want to learn more about the literacy and numeracy that your child will be developing and how this will link to learning in later life. We will continue to add new ideas and activities, including ideas to connect to particular events or occasions. We are also keen to hear from you on the site; how you went, what worked or other ideas that we can share with other families.’

Enjoy the Challenge, Yours Sincerely,

Carmel Jones

This term students in Room 8 have been busy creating new routines for

their classroom.

In Science students have been learning about changes that occur to

create Day and Night. Students have participated in activities that have

looked at the shapes, sizes and positions of the Sun, Earth and Moon,

how shadows are formed when an object blocks the sun light and the

Earth’s rotation and how this causes day and night.

In Science we are doing Spinning in Space. We are doing how the

earth spins around the sun. We are also doing how the moon spins

around the earth and the earth rotates to create day and night. We

also have been learning that the sun rays come down to earth at day

time. We have learned that the sun light is reflected off the moon. We

are also learning about shadows. Like when something covers the sun

you can see the shadows. In spinning in space we have done a lot of

working in space work. We have worked on the Sun, Moon and Earth.

The Sun is a star that is bigger and closer than any to earth. The moon

is the closest planet to earth. The moon goes around the rotating

Earth. There are five planets behind us (not including Pluto because it

is a dwarf planet) and two planets in front of us.

Year 3 students from Room 8 recently enjoyed going to the History

Hunters incursion with Mark Greenwood. They were really excited to

share some of the stories Mark told them about his adventures

including his travels to Alice Springs, Papua New Guinea and New

Zealand.

On Friday the 7th of August all the Year 3 to Year

7 students went to the hall to see a man called

Mark Greenwood. He talked about himself and

his stories. His stories were created by his

adventures and places he went to.

Mark Greenwood is an author that travels and he

puts lots of emotion into his stories. We all

enjoyed his stories and also he told us some

secrets that he said we could never tell anyone.

His first adventure was in New Zealand. His

second adventure was in Gallipoli and his last

adventure was in Alice Springs. We really liked

the incursion. By Flavia and Marko

DESIGN & tECHNOLOGY For Design and Technology Room 8 worked with Room 7 to design and

create the tallest, freestanding tower possible with only 50 straws and

1 metre of masking tape. Students enjoyed the challenge and found they

had to be creative and use their problem-solving skills.

In Design and Technology we joined up with Room 7.

We had to build a tower. We had to use: 50 straws

and a metre of tape. The task was to make the tallest,

stable and strong tower. It also had to hold 100

grams. Then time went by and we had 10 minutes

and everyone was rushing. When the time came

everyone had to stop what they were doing. The

teachers came in with the 100 grams and everyone

panicked. The winning team was Phoenix, Zack and

Oskar.

Room 8 has also been focusing on gratitude and forgiveness in the

classroom this term. The class give each other shout outs and also

nominate others for doing kind things by putting a thankful note in our

Kindness Jar. Room 8 watched a clip from the movie Inside Out which has

sparked discussion about emotions. Students created their own Gratitude

character and have also worked with their buddies in P2 to start creating

forgiveness characters.

Room8 has been learning about Gratitude and Forgiveness. We have

been learning about the Inside Out characters. We made posters

of the Inside Out characters with the feelings of anger, joy, fear,

disgust and sadness. We wrote about when we have felt these

emotions. We also created our own characters for ‘Gratitude’.

With our Buddies in P2 we have started to make our own

characters for forgiveness too.

Last term we made Gratitude doors. I t w a s f u n . W e a r e

This term room 10 students have been continuing to work on our

Positive Education topics.

One of our first challenges was to create a

GRATITUDE CHARACTER

Below you can see some examples. We had to explain our reasons for

our features and designs.

Page 10: Term 3 week 5

Then we have discussed some of the many

emotions we experience in our lives.

After watching a clip from the “Inside Out”

movie which introduced the five emotions

FEAR, SADNESS, JOY, ANGER, DISGUST,

we brainstormed a long list of other

emotions.

Next we completed a task with our U2

buddies. Our task was to represent the fact

that we are full of different emotions. Our

emotions change all the time.

We’ve added a joy metre into our class. We did this to let

people know how we are feeling. On our joy metre we have

three emotions. These emotions are joyful, ok and glum. Each

morning we place our names under the appropriate feeling.

We can change our choice whenever our feelings change.

Next we talked about

What causes us to feel SAD, ANGER, NERVOUS, DOWN IN

THE DUMPS, DROOPY or EMBARRASSED.

What we can do to feel better.

How the idea of FORGIVING others helps us feel better.

We have begun a display outside our classroom on

Forgiveness.

With our U2 buddies we helped each other design and draw a

Forgiveness character. We then wrote some of the phrases

this character may use to express forgiveness.

Page 12: Term 3 week 5

In class we then discussed the idea of Forgiveness more and

found out that

Forgiveness is not an emotion it is something you do. It is a

choice a decision

It means you have decided not to hold a grudge.

It does not mean what the other person did is O K.

It does not mean that you should let the other person keep

on hurting you or your feelings. Hurting others is Never OK

We practised one way of letting go of a grudge by

getting a piece of paper and writing your grudge on it.

Then ripping it up and putting it in the bin. 0r you can

soak it in water, squeeze it into a ball and throw it in

the bin. You can also dig a hole and throw your paper

in it, then bury it under the ground and leave it there

to decompose. All these ideas help you to and move

on.
