Principal’s note: Kia Ora Koutou, Salford School provides many opportunities for students to challenge themselves and be involved in school life beyond the classroom. Much of this is in the children’s own time (showing our values of pukumahi and noho haepapa) and of course the teachers’ and coaches time too. Currently we have teams training and practicing for Jump Jam, Gymnastics and Kapahaka. Choir has been put on hold as per Alert Level 2 restrictions and our Tri Nations teams have just finished. We also have Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori coming up for the children to be involved in. We have had some very busy students over the past few weeks sharing and developing their skills and living the Salford School values as they do this. Math Week Thank you to Mrs Perriam for organizing some great Math Week activities and learning. The school was busy with people hunting shapes, creating maths posters, tessellating, counting squares and using emojis to solve math problems amongst other things. Congratulations to these children for their efforts in Math Week resulting in prizes: Ezra Rm 2, Oliver Rm 14, Eason Rm 10, Quade Rm 11, Tia Rm 3, Annabel Rm 1, Caleb Rm 3, Tuiga Rm 1, Nathan Rm 3, Ollie Rm 9, Emily Rm 2, Skyla Rm 1, Kyra Rm 3, Bree Rm 4, Liam Rm 4, Michaela Rm 6, Zane Rm 5, Josh Rm 4, Allie Rm 6, Athena-Jean Rm 8, Madison Rm 7, Abigail Rm 7, Francis Rm 8, Harry Rm 6 and Sania Rm 4. Speech Competition Last Monday we had Mercedes and Harris represent us at our Speech Cluster Competition. Mercedes and Harris competed against students from Myross bush, Windsor North and Waihopai School. They presented their speeches confidently and well. Tu meke to them both for their work in writing and presenting at this level. Thank you to Lyndal Ludlow and Julie Hayward who were our judges for this event. We congratulate the students from Windsor North and Waihopai School who represent our cluster at the next level of the competition that is being held here at Salford School on the evening of Thursday 3 rd September. Tri Nations On Thursday afternoon we had our Tri Nations sport tournament which was held here at Salford School. It certainly was a little bit quieter without the whanau supporters however the competition was just as fierce as always. We were incredibly proud of our Salford students during the afternoon with their hard but fair play, showing sportsmanship across all codes. Again our School values were at the fore with other school’s coaches and referees commenting on the support and encouragement that the students at Salford showed to the other teams. Windsor North came out as tournament champions with our Soccer 1 team taking out the football championship. We are looking forward to next years tournament already! Huge and sincere thanks to all of our coaches. Hoani and Sam for our rugby team, Eloise (and Mrs Andrews) for our netballers and Connor, Simba and Kav for our soccer teams. It was great to be able to have Hargest Senior students supporting with coaching and refereeing this year as well as Southland Girls’ High students umpiring the netball. Sports balls – Westpac We have been very fortunate to win 45 brand new sports balls through Westpac Bank. These will be delivered to school over the next few weeks. Thank you to Ann McWilliam for nominating Salford School to win this awesome prize! Term 3 Week 6 25 August 2020

Tri Nations

On Thursday afternoon we had our Tri Nations sport tournament which was held here at Salford School. It certainly was a little bit quieter without the whanau supporters however the competition was just as fierce as always. We were incredibly proud of our Salford students during the afternoon with their hard but fair play, showing sportsmanship across all codes. Playhouse Performance

Unfortunately due to level 2 we had to postpone our Antarctic performance by the Playhouse Performance group last week, however we look forward to seeing them early in term 4. ICAS Assessments

We started out ICAS assessments last week and have Digital Technology being held on Wednesday and English being held on Thursday with any necessary catch ups taking place on Friday. Next week we will have our Maths and spelling bee assessments taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Should your child be away for any sitting day we will catch them up during the week. Each assessment must be sat in the allocated week however. Roadworks

We have road works steadily heading our way. They will be working on Talbot Street in September which will affect the Talbot Street entrance to the school and also the linking streets from Lamond to Talbot. We will update you regarding this when we can but please consider this an early alert for this. Uniform

It is great to see the children taking pride in their appearance and wearing their uniform fully and correctly. We do have a number of children with long hair that is getting in the way of their work however. We please ask that all children who have hair that is on the shoulder or longer, or who have a long fringe, ties their hair up and away from the face. It is difficult for children to take part in activities when their hair is in their face, or constantly needing to be pulled out of the way.  John Parsons

We have secured a date for John Parsons for early term two next year and look forward to his knowledge and expertise supporting us again in 2021. Handy tips for Keeping Our Children Safe Online: Explain to your child the similarities between the offline world and the online

world. This will help your child use the skills they already have in the physical world to stay safe when online.

Children and young people need to be taught how to communicate online. This means they need to establish a digital boundary first, and learn what not talk about including phone numbers, what school they go to, how old they are, other family information such as names of brothers and sisters or where their parents work and home addresses.

Teach your young children never to send pictures of themselves or family members to friends online, unless the parent / caregiver gives permission.

End of Year Date

A reminder that the final school day for 2020 will be Thursday 10th December. The day will finish at 12:30.

Senior Syndicate Hikoi

The senior school celebrated our new inquiry unit “In our Backyard” by having a Kaitiaki Hikoi day. Students enjoyed having Mr Mark Oster from Environment Southland come and talk about the biodiversity in our local community and discuss the unique and special plants and animals we have in New Zealand with our students. Learners participated in a range of activities, in mixed year groups, exploring and investigating Maori legends, New Zealand native birds, testing their observational skills with the mystery boxes and creating some fantastic art. It was a wonderful day. Thank you to the senior school teachers.

In Room 14 we have been learning about bees! The students found out about flowers, bees and even got to taste some honey fresh from the bee hive. We created our own florist where we make bouquets of flowers for customers. We got very creative and made bees out of paper mache as well. The bees now live in the flower shop collecting pollen for honey!

What Room 14 has been up to:

Our amazing bees—great work.

Neva dressed as a Bee Keeper.

Oliver’s bee collecting honey.

Reeva’s stunning bouquet she created

Room 14’s amazing bees buzzing in the flowers.
