Term 3 Week 6 Thursday, 29 August 2019
Wow, what a fabulous fortnight! We have had so much fun at Wattle Grove from dress ups to assemblies, to coffee and chat!
Celebrating our Amazing SASS This week we celebrated SASS (School & Administrative Support Staff) week. This week recognises the hard work of our Office Staff, School Learning Support Officers and General Assistant. A big shout out goes to our School Administrative Manager, Mrs Dawson and our School Administrative Officers, Mrs Whiting and Mrs Hankin. A huge thank you to our School Learning Support Officers, Mrs Dodson, Mrs Brook, Mrs Cattana, Mrs Thomas, Mrs Porteous, Mrs Burton, Mrs Longo, Mrs Fraietta and Miss Moore. I would also like to recognise Mrs Lazarevic our Defence School Mentor and Miss Danguilan our School Chaplain. And finally, a big thank you to Mr Harvey, our General Assistant. Without the hard work and dedication of our SAS Staff, Wattle Grove would not run as smoothly as it does! I hope they had a lovely week. The staff celebrated with a morning tea and our SAS Staff received little treats throughout the week.
Super Kids Thank you to all the Super Kids for being the great students you are! I had a lovely time celebrating with you all! The sun was out and everyone was happy.

‘Reading is My Super Power’ – 2019 Book Week Parade Our successful Book Week Parade was a fabulous celebration of children’s literature. The students’ costumes were amazing and showed great variety and individuality! The Wattle Grove staff also dressed up to show the super powers that reading can bring; imagination, knowledge, adventure, magic, inspiration and dreaming. A big thank you to everyone for their participation through creating costumes and attending the parade. I had so much fun as did the

students! A huge thank you to Mrs Farah for her organisation of this event. Mrs Farah organised a number of reading competitions through the week to promote reading. The students were also provided with the opportunity to design a model which depicted the ultimate reading space. Congratulations to all the students who submitted an entry. The models were amazing and very inventive. Our administration entrance was transformed into a ‘wold of imagination’ inspired by the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Thank you to Mrs Hankin and Mrs Lazarevic for their creativity and hard work in transforming our office into such a beautiful space for our students, families and friends.
Vietnam Veterans’ Day Our seasoned choir ensemble were once again invited to perform at the Vietnam Veterans’ Day Service at Holsworthy Army Barracks. Conducted by Mrs Robinson, the choir sang beautifully and represented our school with pride. Thank you to Mrs Lazarevic and Mrs Robinson for providing this opportunity for our students.
Science Week with Holsworthy High School During Science Week, our Year 2 students visited the science labs at Holsworthy High School where the Year 8 students engaged in a variety of science activities with Wattle Grove students. The activities involved the students using Sheros, learning about static electricity, making slime, classifying animals, creating elephant toothpaste and exploring the effects of dry ice. The students thoroughly enjoyed interacting, predicting, testing and recording their findings. The session was a wonderful demonstration of the unique partnership we have with Holsworthy High School.
Coffee and Chat Thank you to Mrs Lazarevic for organising our term Coffee and Chat! Coffee and Chat is an informal gathering to meet new people and chat over a warm cuppa and snack. It also provides the opportunity to ask general school questions. Thank you to Mrs Foreshew and Mrs Finn for attending.
Kinder Information Night On Tuesday night, 2020 Kinder families attended an information session which covered a range of topics relating to ‘getting ready for school’. Starting
Kindergarten is a big transition and information sessions like this one and orientation days play a big part in ensuring a successful transition. Thank you to Mrs Premier and the Kindergarten team for organising a successful might. Thank you also to Mrs Whiting, Mrs Foreshew and Mrs Lazarevic for supporting this night.
Staffing Changes Mrs Casdas has taken up a Relieving Assistant Principal position at East Hills Public School for the remainder of 2019. Whilst we will miss her greatly, this is a wonderful opportunity for Mrs Casdas and we wish her well. We welcome Mrs Dillion who will be taking 5 Royal, Monday-Wednesday.
Enrolments 2020 It is that time of year again where the school must start planning for next year. It is extremely important we have accurate information about enrolment numbers for 2020, as these impact on staffing levels and the general organisation of the classes we will have. Can I please ask that anyone who knows that their children won’t be at Wattle Grove next year or families, who have a child to start kindergarten in 2020, please contact the school office with your

details. If new people move into your street, please encourage them to contact us here at school if they have primary school aged children.
Swimming Scheme Swimming is a vital skill that saves lives! There are still places left for Swimming Scheme. Please see the office if you are interested!
Father’s Day Thank you to our fabulous P&C and parent helpers for their organisation of the Father’s Day Stall, providing an opportunity for our children to purchase a gift for that special person in their life! I hope everyone has a great day!
Sickness There has been a high rate of sickness across the school over the last few weeks. Staff are reminding students on a daily basis to follow simple hygiene practices to prevent the spread of germs. If your child is unwell and unable to attend school for an extended time, can you please let the office know so we can support if required.
Wattle Wanderers Last week I had the privilege of attending the Year 6 Public Speaking finals. The students did an amazing job, covering a range of interesting and important topics. Everyone displayed great skills and poise whilst up on stage. The students presented both a prepared and an impromptu speech and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them! Best wishes to the winners of each final, as they progress through to the next level of the competition (Years 1-6).
Leave From 10 September until the end of the term, I will be on leave, Mrs Foreshew will be Relieving Principal during this time. I would like to thank you all for a great term so far. I feel so privileged to be leading such a great school! Have a great Father’s Day and fortnight and I will see you Day One, Term Four! Take Care

Students competed with pride and distinction with
outstanding results that included 5 zone records
being broken and 4 relay teams qualifying for Region.
These records were for:
100m Annabel S, Lachie S, Sienna H
200m Sienna H
800m Gabriella A
Further details regarding results will be in our next
newsletter. The regional carnival will be held on
Friday 13 September at Campbelltown Athletics Track.
Details of this will be sent when available.
Congratulations to all and a big thank you to Mrs
Bartram, Mrs Cook and Mr Wilson for taking our
students on the day.
During Week 4 this term, Stage 3 students attended a fantastic three-day trip to Canberra where we participated in educational programs focused on Australia’s democracy, culture, history and heritage. We had a wonderful time and the students created memories that will last a lifetime. The students behaved admirably, receiving praise from the staff at Gold Ridge Tourist Resort and many of the venues we attended. We would like to thank the teachers and support staff who attended the camp, Jude Casdas,
Donna Robinson, Adam Wilson, Natalie Atkins, Megan Alderton, Kim Lazarevic and Heather Garrett, giving so freely of their time, leaving their own families to provide this wonderful opportunity for our students. We would also like to thank our wonderful Mrs Ann Cabrera who kept the home fires burning for the students who chose not to attend. We would also like to acknowledge the Australian Government who contributed $20.00 per eligible student under the Parliament And Civics Education Rebate (PACER) which assisted to reduce our travel expenses and therefore the overall cost of this excursion, resulting in so many of our students being able to attend the trip. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.

This week, four of our Year 5 students, Will, Shennae,
Thomas and Mason participated in the Holsworthy
Cup Challenge, called the Amazing Race. The
challenge was against Hammondville and Holsworthy
Public Schools. For this race they had to run around
Holsworthy High School, solving riddles and problems
to find clues. The clues help them to guess where to
go next. Some of the activities included reading
coordinates on a map to find four different coloured
sashes, solving maths and literacy problems and
creating an electric circuit to make a light bulb work.
They also had to participate in a variety of sporting
and dance related activities. This part was extremely
hard for some of the group members.
Wattle Grove Public School were lucky enough to
bring the Holsworthy Cup trophy home again for the
second time this year, making us the overall winning
school. Congratulations to all involved. It was another
difficult challenge.
Mrs Richter, Will, Thomas, Shennae and Mason

Legacy Week Legacy Week is Australia’s iconic fundraising campaign which began in 1942. It is known for its badges offered as a token of appreciation for donations made by the public. Wattle Grove Public School will be participating in this event through the sale of badges, wrist bands and bears during Week 7 Monday 2 September - Friday 6 September.
Postings As you know it is posting time again. Many of you would already know if you will be moving at the end of the year. Please make sure you contact the office and DSM to inform of students last day of school and where you will be moving to. This information is much appreciated by the school for further planning.
