Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Band Camp Success Once again the students at Asquith Public School represented the school with pride, respect and responsibility. By all accounts the students at Band Camp had an amazing time filled with tutorials, collaboration, jamming sessions and plain old fashioned fun! A massive thank you to the team of parent volunteers who made this event possible. Special mention must go to Mrs Dorota Szczytnicka for her expertise in coordinating the event, to Mr Matt Dalziel and all the Key Music Tutors, and to Mrs Ruth Carlos and Mr Iain Bramley for also participating in and supporting this initiative. Every student, every teacher, every leader and every school improves every year (NSW Department of Education Strategic Plan 2018-2020, Goal 3) On Wednesday afternoon, the staff at Asquith Public School worked alongside educators from SPELD NSW (The Specific Learning Difficulties Association). The staff deepened their knowledge and understanding of differentiating their instruction to support the variety of learners in their classrooms. In particular they explored the following topics:

Understanding learning difficulties;

Providing adjustments to students with specific learning difficulties;

ADHD: What is it and how does it impact a student’s learning? This workshop is strongly aligned to our school plan and supports Strategic Direction 2: Quality Teaching, Innovative Practice and Distributed Leadership. Once again, I have been impressed by the outstanding commitment all staff at Asquith Public School have to continuing their learning and providing the best possible educational and wellbeing opportunities to every child in their care. SPELD also supports families with children who may have learning difficulties or disabilities and provides a free Parent's Guide, “Understanding Learning Difficulties”.

Safety online Navigating the perils and positives for our children when they interact with social media can be very challenging and for many of us, as parents, it is a completely new playing field, as it did not exist when we were growing up. Being informed and having ongoing conversations with your child, is essential to helping and teaching them how to have a positive experience online.

Principal’s Report Continued

I strongly recommend that you have a look at the office of eSafety Commissioner website. It has been purposefully designed to promote online safety for all Australians, and in particular young Australians. The Office of eSafety offers audience-specific content to educate all Australians about online safety including parents, young people and educators. The parents online safety guide provides some simple and practical suggestions to help guide and support your children to have safer online experiences. It is also available in Chinese, Greek, Italian and Spanish. Lost Property Yikes! You may have noticed the lost property shelving in the playground is often piled high with jumpers, hats, drink bottles, lunch boxes and shoes (usually just one lonely sole though, missing its buddy). We are setting up some systems to minimise the amount of lost property, and we require your support. Please, please, please write your child’s name on all items of clothing with their current class. This will almost guarantee it will find its way back to its rightful owner. If your child mistakenly brings home items that belong to other children, please ensure they are returned to school. As I’m sure you all realise, replacing lost jumpers and hats can be a very expensive business. If we work together, we can reduce the amount of lost property and minimise the dent in people’s wallets. Consultation for additional summer uniform options for girls A survey will be sent out very soon to all families, staff and students, to capture your response to two options for girl’s summer shorts. This is in line with the NSW Department of Education School Uniform Policy Guidelines . We anticipate that we will have the shorts ready for the middle of next term, or the beginning of next year. Working Bee – thank you to all the Busy Bees! What glorious weather we had for our Term 3 Working Bee last Sunday. A massive thank you to all the parents and children who turned up with their shovels, gardening forks, paintbrushes and enthusiasm in bucket loads. If you were unable to come this term, keep an eye out for the Term 4 date which will be advertised in an upcoming ‘Building Bridges’ newsletter. I strongly encourage you to join us at the next Working Bee. You might be surprised by how much you and your children will enjoy and benefit from working (and playing) alongside other parents and children. Nature has been shown to be both restorative and protective for general mental health and wellbeing. Exposure to nature evokes positive emotions, and have positive impacts on concentration, learning, problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity. Some of my happiest memories of my childhood are of the many hours I spent having adventures in the bush that backed onto our house, or exploring and creating a multitude of games with my sister in our backyard, that was filled with rambling gardens and sandstone embankments. NSW Department of Education’s Enrolment Policy Attached to this newsletter is a fact sheet for parents with the details of the Department’s revised enrolment policy. The changes affect families seeking out of area enrolments. The school’s enrolment committee will respond to out of area enrolments in accordance with the Department’s revised policy Safe and respectful driver behaviour Student safety is always the number one priority when it comes to driver behaviour around school zones. Please take note of all parking signs on Dudley Street and Hazelmead Road. These are here to keep your children safe. Hornsby Council also take student safety very seriously and are frequently allocating parking rangers to monitor driver behaviour. They will (and have been) issuing some very hefty parking fines, to ensure the safety of our children.

Principal’s Report Continued

If you receive a parking fine that you wish to query, please follow the appropriate channels and do not engage in disrespectful or argumentative behaviour with the rangers or other parents. Asquith Public School adheres to the Department of Education’s Community Charter that advocates respectful relationships. As role models, teachers and parents, have the essential role of modelling respectful and self-regulatory behaviours. Children watch and learn from us. School Holidays and back to school This is the last newsletter for Term 3. Thank you to all members of this vibrant, cohesive and inclusive school community who have continued to learn and collaborate together to ensure that the wellbeing, engagement and development of the children at Asquith Public School are at the centre of everything we do.

Please note that students and staff return to school Monday 14 October.

Which notes have been sent home this fortnight? If you are missing any of these notes or you need another copy you will find them in the notes section on the school website. Hard copy notes are provided to families and Skoolbag is used for updates and informal information. Please remember to subscribe to the Skoolbag app or check the school website for school communication. Skoolbag requires families to subscribe each group, eg. LOST PROPERTY

The lost property shelf under the COLA needs some attention. There are lots of lunch containers, drink bottles, jumpers and hats that have been there for many weeks. When you are at school, please stop by and look for your child’s belongings. At the end of the term we will be doing a clean up of the plastic containers. If you are a parent who is around in the mornings, and you would like to help keep Lost Property tidy and organised come and chat to Mrs Carlos. Any ideas will be greatly received.
