KELSO HIGH CAMPUS

NEWSLETTER

Farewell Year 12 2018

As the term draws to a close I would like to wish my wonderful Year 12 cohort all the very best for the HSC and every success in their future endeavors.

I have enjoyed witnessing your transformation from fresh, young Year 7 students to the mature, responsible young adults you have become.

The bond formed within a year group is a special part of school life and one that I have been proud to be involved in. The manner in which you have conducted yourselves over the past few years has made me relish the role of Year Adviser and I am saddened to realise that you will all move on to other things in the coming weeks.

I would like to encourage you all to give the HSC your best efforts. Use your time effectively over the next few weeks, message your teachers, ask questions, complete past papers, ask more questions and walk into your exams with every chance of success.

And don’t forget to stay in touch!

Principal’s Report

Farewell Year 12 Next week our Year 12’s finish their time at Kelso High Campus. This year group has a strong group of capable and hardworking students, positive and respectful young adults, some very talented creative and performance artists and excellent sportspeople. The Year 12 leadership team of Claire, Jay, Maddy, Jake, Jackson, Kylie, Caitlin and Ethan are outstanding people and they have made such a significant contribution to the campus. The year group as a whole has had a significant impact on Kelso High Campus, and we will miss them enormously.

The HSC celebration day is Thursday 27 September (Week 10) which includes a BBQ lunch, some fun activities including a possible teacher versus student soccer game, a trivia activity and a Year 12-led student assembly. They will also be raising money for Headspace and a gift to the campus.

On Friday 27 September we will farewell them at their final formal assembly, which will take place at 9:30am. The actual HSC starts on Thursday Week 1 Term 4.

We wish them all the best for their HSC and beyond.

Student Leadership Congratulations to Marina Kamilic, Lucy Butler, Matthew Bignell and Isaac Connor who have been elected as Kelso High Campus Captains for 2018/19, as well as Rosie Forsyth, Bridget Annand, Kathleen Murphy and Brooke Wright who are our Year 12 Leadership Team Prefects. The election process has raised some discussion about our gender policy for the Year 12 Leadership Team. The policy states that there must be 2 male and 2 female Captains and there has to be at least 2 males and 2 females on the Year 12 Leadership Team. Our parent focus group discussed this last term and along with the Executive Leadership Team are very strong in their view that this gender equity policy is very important. Elections for our other leadership teams – SRC, ARC and Sports Captains will take place this week.

Future Pathways It was great to have so many parents and students involved in our Future Pathways interviews as part of our Year 8 into Year 9 transition last week. I appreciate that people are busy and made the effort to take time out of their day for this. Overall 110 parents and students met with teachers to discuss student options for Year 9 and beyond. This is a very important transition point which is sometimes overlooked. We have found that some of our students are not as well prepared for Years 11 and 12 as they could be. Wise subject choices and good learning habits in Stage 5 can set up a student for Stage 6 and beyond.

Top performances:

Mia Ryan who has been performing brilliantly at the State Dance Festival

CAPA Night 2018

A wonderful tradition was continued on the 11th September.

CAPA Night is a very long held institution at Kelso High and the 2018 event was another fantastic evening. It showcases the talents of our students from dance, drama and music. Any students are able to perform but there is a special focus on work done in class and in peripatetic groups. In front of an audience of 200 people, our CAPA students shone.

Dance presented a range of works including Paint which was inspired by colour, texture and art and incorporated the use of safe dance practice technique and performance quality. Dance Company presented two pieces focussing on jazz and the masking of emotions, both of which achieved great results in the recent Bathurst Eisteddfod. Year 11 Dance performed a touching work exploring the relationships and support networks that are needed when loved ones are deployed. The Dance Ensemble performed to the song ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ by Goyte. Possibly one of the most entertaining dances of the evening was done by Rohan Hale at the end of the night however. It cannot be explained, but only appreciated on viewing!

Year 11 Drama presented a sombre piece called Parramatta Girls as a part of their Australian Theatre unit which focussed on the abuse of children in care but left the audience thoughtful. Year 9/10 Drama have been studying Greek Theatre and presented a modern-day appropriation of Sophoele’s Antigony which is an original piece of theatre written and performed by the students themselves.

Every year group was represented in the music performances and even included a student from Year 12 last year!

Year 7 played a fantastic rendition of Stitches with 14 students covering all of the rock band instruments. Year 8 was a smaller bunch, but no less awesome. They performed Stay with Me with Michaela Doungmanee and Caitlin Morris on lead vocals. Year 9 performed a very soulful Watering Hole by Missy Higgins incorporating a percussive bridge and a multitude of tambourines and as a part of Year 10 Popular Music unit, they did a great rendition of This is Gospel. The Year 11 students presented a wide repertoire throughout the night. They channelled Marvin Gaye with Ain’t no Mountain High Enough and the smaller group of Angus Willshire, Rohan Hale and Finn Webb entertained the crowd during the interval with several instrumental pieces. Their atmospheric piece called Mist included Tarquin Halls on the double bass. Mr Halls was a complete champion when he stepped up to fill in for our Year 11 bass player who

Page 6: Term 3 Week 9 20th September 2018 ... - Kelso High Campus · and Caitlin Morris on lead vocals. Year 9 performed a very soulful Watering Hole by Missy Higgins incorporating a percussive

was taken sick on the afternoon of the performance. For a man who had not played a double bass for over 6 years, to learn a piece in the interval is absolutely amazing. Thanks Mr Halls!

Emily Geerkens, a Year 12 music student from 2017, generously came along to help with the sound and lighting. As she is currently studying a music degree at Excelsia College and has just been accepted onto the line-up of the 2018 Inland Sea of Sound, we asked her to do a performance. She played Rebel Heart which was a wonderful performance, but her words before she started were inspiring. She told our current performance students that even if they don’t believe they are good at music to just try. Go for auditions, play for family and friends and perform because you love it, not just because you have to.

Thanks have to go to an awful lot of people. Maddy Geerkens, Jared Bignall, Alivia Bourke and Josie Geerkens, the classes who were such a wonderful audience during the rehearsals and staff who helped with cover, including Ms Howarth. And a huge thanks to all our performers. Such a great job.

The biggest thanks go to the CAPA staff. Without the gentle support and wonderful relationships forged by our teachers, many of our students would not have the confidence to get up in front of friends and family and perform.

Thanks to Mark Harlor, Jenelle Starkey, Amanda Wylde and Wendy Murphy and Billy Taylor and Selina Ash for their unending professionalism and support.

2018 Trivia Night

Another hugely successful trivia night was held on Saturday, August 25th. A sold out crowd enjoyed a night of testing trivia, fun facts and laugh causing challenges.

Thanks to the support of more than 85 sponsors we were able to raise over $8000. This means after 5 years of fundraising we can now complete the construction of a covered walkway from the administration block down to the bus bay.

Future Pathways

Stage 5 is the beginning of a new phase in a student’s education pathway. All students must continue to study English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

In addition to this, students at Kelso High Campus are given the opportunity to choose three elective subjects from a wide range of options. Our Future Pathways program is designed to ensure all of our Year 8 students make informed decisions about their future pattern of study.

As part of the Future Pathways program, students and their parents and carers were involved in a personalised interview. Students were guided to make appropriate subject selections that reflected their interests, strengths and future aspirations.

We had over 110 students and their parents/carers attend an interview. Thank you to our Year 8 families for your overwhelming response and support of our Future Pathways program.
