Principal’s Report

Remembrance Day On Monday our school took part in a Remembrance Day ceremony that was held to mark the 101st anniversary of the armistice signed between the Allies of World War 1 and Germany. The armistice was signed at Compiegne, France at 5:45am, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front to take effect from eleven o’clock in the morning. The school captains attended and laid a wreath to mark the occasion. Thank you to the captains, their families and staff who attended to mark this important commemoration.

PSSA State Athletics Championships Last week Nathaniel Clarke travelled to Homebush to take part in the PSSA Athletics Championships, representing the Riverina region. Nate was in two events, the 11 year boys’ 1500m and the 800m. In the 1500m, Nate knocked seven seconds off his personal best time and came in 10th overall. After qualifying for the finals of the 800m and taking 6 seconds off his personal best time, Nate was placed 7th in a very competitive field. It is interesting to note that Nate was the only regional / rural student who qualified for the final, competing against runners from the metropolitan area who have access to professional coaching. Nate is coached by his mother, Carolyn Clarke, and has trained very hard over the past months to achieve these outstanding results.

PSSA Representatives Riverina sports representatives from Hay Public School travelled to Deniliquin on Tuesday to have their photo taken with other Deniliquin District PSSA representatives. The photo was taken to recognise students’ achievements in sport during 2019 and is a great memento of their representative honours. Well done to Nathaniel Clarke (athletics, cross country); Jim Houston (cross country); Holly Ashcroft

(swimming); Johlee Masters (cricket); Matilda Nisbet (swimming) and Emily Caughey (rugby 7s) who have all represented the Riverina region this year. Hay Shire Council also recognised these athletes at a civic reception held on 23rd October.

Did You Know? If your child misses school 1 day every week, that’s 40 days per year which is over 2.5 years over the span of 13 years of schooling, which means the best your child may achieve is equal to finishing in Year 10. If your child misses school 2 days every week, that’s 80 days per year which is over 5 years over the span of 13 years of schooling, which means the best your child may achieve is equal to finishing in Year 7. Young children who frequently take days off school have poorer results in maths and literacy. The negative effect of absenteeism on academic achievement is well documented. Putting your child’s needs first and ensuring they are at school every day is responsible parenting.

Assessment and Reporting As the year is beginning to wind down, teachers are undertaking assessment tasks in preparation for the end of year reports. Classrooms have been busy places with all students currently being assessed on the outcomes that they have been expected to achieve throughout the year. Assessment will take the form of class tests, standardised tests, ongoing work samples and informal and formal observations. Reports are due to go home to parents on Friday, 13th December.

SPORTS REPORT State Athletics Championships. Last week Nate Clarke competed in the NSWPSSA athletics championships at Homebush in the 800m and 1500m events. A huge congratulations must go to Nate as he finished with outstanding results. In the 1500m, he came 10th in the timed finals, knocking a massive 7 seconds off his PB. In his 800m heat he came 3rd, knocking a huge 6 seconds off his PB, and qualified for the finals, finishing 7th overall in the 800m. An amazing achievement! A fun fact; Nate has been training 5 days a week, running roughly 4km a day, for roughly 30 weeks. That means he has covered a massive 600km(ish) which is running from here to Wagga and back to Maude again. This is truly amazing!!! Other exciting news from the meet was that, ex-student, Kristian Miller won a bronze medal in the AWD 12 Years Boys 200m. We are all so proud of both boys!

Deni Big Bash Congratulations to the following students who were selected to represent Hay Public School at the Big Bash in Deniliquin this week. Thank you to Mrs Cullenward and Delilah Crighton for all the time they put into selecting these teams.
