This year is finally drawing to a close and we are all looking forward to the Christmas break and the season festivities.

This Thursday at 9.30am our annual prize giving will take place in the school hall. This is a prime opportunity to celebrate

the achievements of our Year 8 students on the completion of their primary education. We know our Y8s are ready to begin

their secondary education and we know that they will contribute positively to their new schools and make us proud. Can the

families of the Yr. 8 students please bring a plate for a shared morning tea in the hall following the prize giving.

This year our prize giving programme will also include the recognition of students who have made accelerated progress in

their academic achievement during the past year and the top 3 achievers in Maths Whizz across the school.

As the year 8 students move on, we will also be fare welling the following families: Anne Marie and Charlie Anainga, Bev

and Murray Bradley Coombes, Melanie and Tim Altham, Donna and Dennis Gray, Gary Wheatley and Arlene Wheatley,

Judy and Andrew Mirams, Louise and Regan O’Connor, Suzanne Snook, Roseanna and Colin Ranby, Kirsty and Josh Skin-

ner and Theresa and Darryl Wyber. We thank these families for their continued support to Ōhaupō School and wish them

well as they continue to support their children in their new environment.

Also moving on to new environments are Connor Bishop, Jack and Abbie Carmichael, Lennox Goodman, Cayden Johnson,

Cougar, Delilhah and Passion Martin, and Chenoa and Keaton O’ Connor, Meghan Taylorstill, Caitlyn Turner and Katherine

Snook. We wish them well with their shifts and trust it will be a positive move.

School Accounts:- thanks to many of you for your positive response with outstanding accounts. Thanks to those of you who

have been courteous enough to let us know relevant circumstances. To those of you who say you’re going to…but don’t…

be honest and let us know what is really going on.

Last Day: - for the school year is Friday 15th December. The local bus will be here at 12.30p.m. and school will close at

12.30p.m. School’s out will be open for child care from that time. Please contact Nicky Jones at School’s Out 021 795 105 if

you require this service. Students from Kowhai and Rata Hub do not need to attend on this day. As we will be cleaning out

and changing classrooms, we would appreciate those children attending to be willing to assist with these activities. If, how-

ever, you are unable to have your child at home, they are still welcome at school.

Towards 2018: Ōhaupō School will open for instruction on Tuesday the 30th January 2018 with 192 students. The school

will be organised into four hubs as follows:

Kowhai Hub: -Yrs 1 & 2 = 58 students- Mrs Clarke, Mrs Gray, Miss Symes, Mrs Vernon

Rata Hub: - Yrs 3 & 4 = 46 students – Miss Nielsen, Mrs Church and Mrs Mathieson

Totara Hub: - Yrs 5 & 6 = 51 students- Mr Mitchell, Mrs Boyes and Mrs Mathieson

Kauri Hub: - Yrs 7 & 8 = 38 students- Mr Rennie, Mrs Mc Robbie and Mrs Millington

Support staff: Mr Coley, Mrs Cowan and Mrs Drury.

I’d like to thank the staff; in particular, Mrs Robyn Day, PTA and the BOT for their support throughout the year and wish you

all a Merry Christmas and a safe, enjoyable holiday.

Principal’s morning tea

On Tuesday 12th December the term four ruru award winners for the principal joined Mrs McLocklan

for another amazing morning tea. Mrs Boyes was the lucky winner from the teachers to be invited.

Mrs Boyes said “I was so surprised and very pleased to be here. I enjoy spending time with the

students to see what lovely table manners they have. It is nice to celebrate”.

Finn said “ I like spending time with Mrs McLocklan” and the food was a big drawcard for a lot of the

other lucky guests.

PTA News

Thank you to all the children and families who have helped out at fundraisers

during the year. We really appreciate your time and support. We

have had a lot of fun at our various activities, and are proud of the

many resources we have purchased this year.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a safe and happy New

Year. Enjoy the sun and holiday break.

“It was the best experience of my life” said Jack Hogg about the Kauri Hub’s five day camp to Kaueranga Valley, Thames. Grace Ingram said “It was because there were so many elements to the camp, that it was an amazing experience”. Oliver Hogg agreed that it was “Awesome” but added that it was “Exhausing too. I loved Paint Ball because it was outdoors and we used slingshots, not guns and if you weren’t quick enough to dodge them, there was a consequence”. Holly Duignan said “I liked going into the old mining shafts and learning about gold mining. We also got to pan for gold”. Mrs McRobbie loved the kayaking the best! “But I also loved the jigger ride. Mr Rennnie sat on it and broke it! He shouldn’t have been trying to outdo the kids—he’s too old”. Emily Wyber enjoyed the archery the most, “It’s something I’ve never ever tried before”. For Curtis Reymer, the swimming hole was great. “It was deep and cold when we needed it. The temperature was so hot, we needed to cool down. We were so busy as we used air-rifles, went go-karting and BMX riding. That was cool because you had to go up and down a see-saw”. The last word should go to Adam Kelly. “Having a shower was no fun because if you were in there for more than 3 minutes, the parents would spray you with a fire hose. But we have to say a big thank you to those parents for coming and enabling us to go on camp”.

Do you have any spare corks at home you don’t need and would be happy to donate to a local trapping group?

There is a group of volunteers who check and re-bait traps around North and South lakes at the Rotopiko Lakes Complex in order to protect the birds that live around the lakes.

There are three lakes, with East lake being protected by a predator proof fence. After learning about the science fair projects undertaken by Ōhaupō School Students, we have been trialling using corks soaked in peanut oil to lure pests such as hedgehogs and rats into our traps. We found that if we used peanut butter, it would get eaten by the slugs and snails before it had a chance to lure an animal into the trap. However, we need more corks! Please bring any spare corks to school and leave in the office for us to collect, if you can, we would be very appreciative.
