VOLUNTEERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thankyou to the 130 volunteers who have helped across our school this year. Your support,

enthusiasm and energy help to make a huge difference to our school. Whether it is volunteering

in the canteen, coaching or managing sports teams, listening to reading, attending camps,

covering books, washing uniforms, sitting on a committee or one of the many other tasks

completed by volunteers we say thankyou.

Volunteering in a school is more important than ever. Most of the tasks completed by volunteers

is the work that makes our school special, it adds value to what we do and often can make a big

difference to the learning outcomes of our students. Imagine what our school would be like

without sports teams, a canteen, OSHC, uniforms, someone to hear you read daily etc. At KPPS

our volunteers are parents, grand parents, former parents, members of our local churches and

community members. We have a diverse range of people entering our school every week. To all of

you, we say ‘thankyou’.

In 2015 ALL volunteers (including all coaches and our reading volunteers) MUST have an approved

Criminal History Screening check. Forms will be distributed at the beginning of 2015. A new sign

in system for anyone volunteering in the school will also be established in 2015.

KIDMAN CELEBRATES - WEDNESDAY 10TH DECEMBER At the Christian Family Centre, Seaton

OUR STUDENT LEADERS HAVE ALSO MADE A DIFFERENCE!

Thankyou to Emilia, Taylah, Alex and Ethan for being exemplary role

models and top leaders in 2014. They have organised a variety of

activities during the year and enthusiastically taken on all challenges

presented to them. We hope that they continue to be outstanding role

models at high school.

Sadly, at the end of the school year we always have to say farewell and

thankyou to a number of staff members. Although some staff are only

with us for a short period of time, the value they can add to our school

and the difference made to the lives of our students can be huge.

This week we say farewell to Vicky Mangas our 2014 art teacher and

Elise Mabbott who has provided a diverse and challenging curriculum for

the students in Room 12 this year.

Kath Lucas has been a regular in the Learning Centre over the years. This

year we are especially indebted to Kath for taking over in LC1 for Ruth.

We hope that Kath will continue as a regular staff member in the

Learning Centre for many more years.

Belinda Brenen is off to Japan (again) and Teresa Marshall will welcome

baby number 2 to her family early next year. We hope to see both

Belinda and Teresa back in 2016.

Staffing of a school is complex which means we don’t quite know what’s

happening with our support staff but our fingers are crossed that most

of our SSOs will return in 2015.

BYE PREETI After many years with us at OSHC, Preeti is moving interstate and for that reason will not be with us anymore after the 19th December 2014. For all of us at OSHC it’s been a pleasure to interact with her on a daily basis. We wish her the best in the future. We will miss all the charisma and happiness that she used to bring to our service and of course, her unforgettable chicken curry!

FAREWELL TO OUR FAMILIES LEAVING Once again we have a large number of families who have completed their time at KPPS on Friday! We hope that all families leaving our community have enjoyed their association with our school. Thankyou for your contributions and best wishes for the future.

SCHOOL NEWS THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

In just 47 days term one gets underway and 2015 is going to be another exciting year. It is a Come

Out year so that means another art exhibition. Desy Pantelos will be working from a new room

and leading our Positive Education program. Get ready for the launch next year! We will continue

to focus on 21st Century Learning Skills. Our 5 Star Learners program for Middle Years students

will expand and they will also continue to ‘Make a Difference’ around our school. Changes will be

taking place in the garden, we hope to rejuvenate the garden bed in front of the office and maybe

we will finally get the promised air conditioning in the southern unit. Amanda Gore will be

working with us to develop our new Positive Education program and we hope to launch our new

unit planner and electronic reporting format developed by Sandra Gibbons.

Our hardworking and enthusiastic staff certainly need a break – because it will be another

positive and exciting year in 2015.

TOP STAFF!

Being a teacher or an SSO is a challenging vocation as everyone has been to school and so

everyone has an opinion on what should happen at school. Usually this is based on our own

experiences and might not be up-to-date with contemporary education practices. All staff at KPPS

care for our students and want the very best for the students in their care. Our staff always chat

about how they can better meet the needs of students, they explore new learning opportunities

and they participate in new training as required to support the diverse needs of our students. We

are lucky to have a dedicated and supportive team at our school. Well done to all of our staff for

their great work in 2014.

SCHOOL SECURITY

We welcome community members to use our grounds during the holidays. It

assists with security. If you see any inappropriate behaviour at school or,

vandalism, please report it to the police on 131444. Don’t hesitate calling. Your

call might be enough to stop significant damage to our school.

The first thing we did once we got there we sat down in the cafeteria and they split us into groups. We had to do a quiz and the answers were around the whole camp site! All the groups left the cafeteria and set off to find the answers we followed everyone then when kept walking forward and we saw a path. Every group reached an intersection in the pathway, everyone split off. We saw Mr G standing next to a tree with lots of clothes. We were guessing we had to go into all the clothes so we walked up to him and we were right he said to change into the clothes and make a wedding scene. Then we went for a walk and we ended up at challenge hill we played there for a little and then we kept walking and we ended up at Mr Clark’s place. We had to get dressed like we performed in a real circus. Then we went back to our campsite and did some stuff then had lunch and later on we had dinner and dessert, then headed back to our cabin and went to sleep. The next day we woke up and had breakfast and got ready to go to Albury Park. We got into groups and we had to collect nature that was dead. It took about 1 hour to get there and when we got there we had lunch and played games. Then we walked back to our campsite and had afternoon tea and we did a presentation about what we did and made a col-lage and then later we ate dinner then presented it. Then we had dessert and cake because it was Imogen’s birthday. Then we went to sleep. The last day we woke up and we had our breakfast after that we got into groups and walked down to a river to catch some interesting fish. We had to investigate what we caught then we ticked it off and put it back in the river. Later on we had the sau-sage sizzle and it was YUMMY!!!!!!!!! Then we had to head back to school and before we knew it we were back at school ready to go home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then everything was back to normal I think?

GRATITUDE – Share some at home today! You can't find joy without gratitude.

Go over your life history and find the good things that came out of the hardship of the past. What lessons did you learn from "difficult" parents, siblings or past partners that has made you stronger, more resilient, more compas-sionate, loving, forgiving or built your character?

Look at your current situation and find things for which to be grateful. Sometimes you have to look for a long time!

Make yourself a gratitude journal, and each night before you go to bed, write down at least five things for which you are grateful, either that happened that day or just things in your life for which you are grateful, like your health, ability to walk and breathe, a roof over your head, the capacity to speak and think or laugh... there are gazillions of reasons for gratitude.

Regularly writing in a journal is a way to stem depression and begin your inner journey to joy! If you lie in bed at night and worry, you are triggering the release of adrenaline and cortisol.

Adrenaline does not affect us as badly as cortisol. Cortisol levels are affected with chronic stress and high stress levels can lead to high cortisol levels or disrupted cortisol rhythms.

Long-term high levels of cortisol have been shown to damage cognitive function. My way of saying it is that it eats brains cells. Chronic, high cortisol levels can also put on abdominal fat. So if you lie in bed and worry, you may be making yourself sick (because we know stress contributes to most disease).

Joy, on the other hand, makes you thin, healthy and smart!

I don't have scientific evidence to categorically prove that -- it's just my opinion, based on observations!

Gratitude is the "joy switch." Consciously finding things for which to be grateful helps us create a new habit and set up the brain to rewire itself!

Repetition of new behaviors lays down new pathways in the brain – called re-wiring. Here are some ideas on how you can rewire your brain and those of your family:

• Ask everyone at the dinner table every night from now on "What are you grateful for today?" Sometimes have a competition to see who is MORE grateful, for a bit of fun!

• You cannot teach children gratitude by forcing them to say "thank you" under sufferance. Teach them by modelling it yourself.

• Find things at work for which to be grateful -- even if it is just you have a job! Millions would take your job in a heartbeat.

• Say to yourself constantly in the face of a challenge: "Every day is a good day. Everything is a good thing. Every place is a good place."

• Tell the people in your life who mean something to you -- or your colleagues -- how grateful you are for them and give them specific examples of why you feel gratitude.

Do these things and you will be on your path to being full of joy.

Gratitude is the place to start. It's the "joy switch!"

Begin today. Joyfully!

We will be working with Amanda in 2015 to develop our Positive Education program. Staff will be working with Amanda on January 22nd ready for the start of the 2015 school year.

SPORTS NEWS Thanks to everyone involved in another big year of KPPS sport. We had a record 9 Soccer teams, 4 Netball teams, 2 Cricket and a Teeball team. It wouldn't have happened without our terrific volunteer coaches, energetic kids and supportive parents. Happy Christmas and we look forward to plenty of sports action again in 2015. COACHES 2015 If you would like to help out with coaching in 2015 you MUST have a current Criminal History Screening Certificate from DCSI. If not, pick up a form from the office this week and fill it in so we can start processing it as it can take up to 16 weeks to come through. The school pays all costs.

ELISE MABBOTT

Today I have interviewed Ms Mabbot. I have asked her five questions; the first one was

how have you felt about teaching at KPPS? She replied I have loved teaching at KPPS,

because everyone is so kind. The next question was what were you like as a student at

school? She said I was always the one that got good grades, and I was always the one

that was quiet and was listening. The third question was why do you like teaching? She

replied because I like the kids and I love helping them. The fourth question was what are

your plans for the holidays? She said my plans for the holidays would be, to spend some

time with family and friends and play eight ball. The final question was what do you love

to have for lunch at school? She replied I love having mainly salad and wraps. Here are

some positive quotes from her class.

1 she makes learning fun.

2 she is very understanding when we have problems.

3 she is kind and helpful.

4 she explains tasks in detail

5 she helps us with friendship problems

Thank you for letting me interview you Ms Mabbott by Tania S

VICKY MANGAS

On Friday last week, Imogen and I had an interview with Mrs Mangas. We asked her five

different questions and she had very unique answers. The first question we asked her

was ‘How have you felt about teaching at Kidman Park Primary School?’ Her response

was very nice and she had a lot to say about our school. Her answer was ‘Teaching at

KPPS has been the highlight of my year’. The second question we asked her was ‘Why do

you like teaching art?’ her answer was ‘It makes me happy. Art is a very inspiring. I espe-

cially love watching students come into the Art room with a BIG smile on their faces. I

love them working creatively.’ The third question we asked her was ‘Who is your favour-

ite artist?’ she replied with a lifetime of answers showing from when she was in high

school until now. This was her answer. ‘This is such hard question to answer because I

do not have only one favourite. Pablo Picasso and Monet inspired me when I was in high

school. When I was in university Ken Done inspired me. Now I am inspired by many con-

temporary artists such as Dale Chihuly. The next question we asked her was ‘What are

your plans for the holidays?’ ‘I’m really looking forward to the holidays because it’s a

time where family and friends get together celebrating Christmas and the New Year. Al-

so I am tuning 50 years old so there will be even more celebrating. For my 50th I am go-

ing to Bali-Nusa Dua with my family.’ She replied. The 5th question we asked Mrs Mangas

was ‘What do you love to have for lunch at school?’ she responded ‘Most of the time I

bring left over dinner, but when I on I just love ordering the baked potato with the lot

from our canteen. It’s so delicious’. Then that was the end of our interview and we

thanked Mrs Mangas for being the best art teacher ever!!!!!!

TERESA MARSHALL By Emma and Jessi

This week Jessi and I did an interview with the lovely Mrs Marshall. We are all very sad

about her sudden departure at KPPS but she will be coming back in 2015 to visit us. We

asked her some questions about why she won’t be back next year.

“Why won’t you be here next year?”

“I won’t be here next year because I am having a baby which I am very excited about.”

“Does Molly want a baby brother or baby sister?”

“Molly said she wants to have a baby brother and wants to give him lots of cuddles and

wants to feed him.”

“Do you know if it is going to be a boy or girl?”

“We think it is going to be a boy, which will means Molly will do what she said she is

going to do!!!”

Will your children be coming to KPPS?

“Probably not because we live quite far away and there are other school that are

closer!”

Students in Years 3 & 4 wrote letters, cards etc to different personnel involved in road and rail safety as part of their Way2Go safety program. As a result, the transit police came for a visit to thank the students and brought goodie bags for each student. Then we heard from the Dept of PTI below. I thought the email was worth putting in the newsletter as the kids did such a great job of sending their heartfelt words and thanking the transport people and emergency services who help get us from A to B safely. Jenny Preston

Hello Jennifer, I work in the Communications Team at the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and received the fantastic letters from the year 3 and 4 students about Way2Go Road and Rail Safety. DPTI Staff at Adelaide Metro, Way2Go Road and Rail safety programs, Road Safety, Communications and the Chief Executive have seen the letters and we all agree that they are great! We were wondering if it is possible to use some of the letters to further educate the public about road and rail safety? We are hoping to post photos of some of the letters on our Facebook page and the DPTI web-site. Also, we would like to make a short video of some of the train drivers reading out the letters and promote the video on our pages. We think they will work really well online to remind the public about the important message of safety. Thank you, and hope to be in touch. Cassie
