The rays of the sun glistened through the mist as it rose between the
mountains, covering the landscape with a wet cloak. Squinted his eyes against the
shimmering light, Willis stood in awed of the morning's splendour. The dew made
everything on the ground sparkle, and reaffirming his belief that this was truly
God's country. You could keep Chicago, New York and all of those big cities.
Idaho would do just fine. It was not a bustled metropolis, but to the people who
lived in the region, it was the centre of trade, law and information. The mountain
people make infrequent trips down the slopes and out of the hollows to
supplement their meagre live with the essentials: coffee, flour and wheat
middling. Middling was the main ingredient for the wine. For a man could make
good liquor, as Willis did, he would also make an excellently profit. One jug of
the precious brew had sold for eighty dollars at the close of the battle.

Section C Comprehension Text 1
Study the poster below and answer Questions 1- 4. 7.
A LIFETIME OF COMMITMENT
If you are a pet owner, please sterilise your pet. Besides improving your pet's
chances of a healthier life, sterilisation can also help to alleviate the problem of
strays on the streets.
The Halt Animal Abuse Council of Singapore (HAACS) takes in around 600 unwanted animals each month. Many of them are found abandoned on tile streets.
With short-term pregnancies and relatively large litters, strays that are not sterilised reproduce speedily. Thousands more unwanted animals result, living off the streets and suffering - all because of the actions of irresponsible pet owners.
The source of the stray animal population is attributed by irresponsible pet owners who dump their pets on the streets once they no longer want them. Leaving animals to fend for themselves puts them in harm's way - abandoned pets often-starve, get knocked down by vehicles, contract diseases or get abused.
Can't look after your pet anymore? Don't abandon it. Find it a new home. Call the HAACS for advice. Under the Animals and Birds Act, anyone who is found guilty of abandonment of any animal can be imprisoned tor up to 24 months, fined up to $20,000 or both.

Text 2
Read the information below and answer the questions on the next page.
a. b.
1. Be in the moment
It is hard to play in an interesting way when parents are busy with other things. Children can sense it too. Parents should be mindful of the moment of play and not be distracted by things such as e-mail, phone calls and television shows.
5 Be playful
Being playful helps to engage the child and make the play session more interesting and fun. For instance, parents can put on a funny face or use a different voice when playing with a particular toy to attract the attention of the child.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
2. Get down to the child's level
Some parents tend to stand or sit afar, telling the child what to do with the toy, instead of being on the floor, at eye level with their child, playing together. Get down and crawl around if necessary.
Focus on the child
3 Avoid being too goal-driven Being too goal-driven and wanting to teach the child something all the time can turn play boring and too challenging. To make the toys interesting, parents need to relax and stop asking too many questions that can frustrate the child.
4 Be creative
Make the effort to think creatively about how to use toys in different ways. For instance, action figurines do not have to be fighting all the time; perhaps they could go on a picnic or take the toy school bus to school.
-
1. Decide if each of the statements below is True (T), False (F) or Not Stated (NS) and put a tick in the appropriate column.
T F NS
(i) Parents should focus solely on the child during play time.
(ii) Parents should also seek to teach the child something

(iii) Parents should be at the same level as the child when
playing together.
(iv) Parents are their children's best playmates.
(v) Parents should make the effort to use toys creatively.
(vi) Being playful will help parents to get the attention of their
child better.
(vii) Parents should play with their child on a regular basis.
2. Match each of the actions A-E below to each of the tips for parents. Write the correct letter A-E next to each tip.

A Making a funny face and using a different voice.
