    SEAL TO THE

    EXTERNAL

ENVIRONMENTIn order to qualify as a Class 1Termination, the termination mustprovide a seal to the externalenvironment. Both the conductor/lugarea and the shielding cut-back areamust be sealed. These seals keepmoisture out of the cable to preventdegradation of the cable components.Several methods are used to makethese seals such as: factory-madeseals, tape seals (silicone tape must beused for a top seal), and compoundseals. Fig. 57

All terminations are normallygrounded. However, individualcircumstances can exist where it is notdesirable to ground both ends of thecable. The cable shield MUST BEgrounded somewhere in the system. When using solid dielectric cables, itis recommended that solderless

ground connections be used (elimi-nating the danger of over-heatingcable insulation when soldering).

As a general summary, for highlycontaminated and exposed environ-ments or on extremely critical circuits, porcelain or silicone rubber termin-ations are preferred.

For potentially contaminated,moisture-prone areas...most likely themajority of cases...silicone rubberprovides dependable Class 1terminations.
